In this interview: www.traileraddict.com/trailer/monsters-university/interview-steve-buscemiNo spoilers, just an overview of his character as shy, nervous, "not really knowing his place", "a little insecure"- and he does mention that although Randy is not the Randall we see in MI, we see "a little inkling of what turns him". Steve seems to have a good hold on his character (even if he does refer to Randall as a 'villain' later on in the interview). I didn't realise Randall was Steve's first animated character which is pretty cool. Anyway, there are LOADS of other clips on that site, including this one here in which we actually get to see Steve perform some of Randy's lines: www.traileraddict.com/trailer/monsters-university/b-roll-iiConsidering we haven't actually heard Randy speak in the trailers (aside from "fear of THUNder!", haha) it's pretty amazing to see Steve read out some of his lines- there are some spoilers but if you generally know what happens when Mike and Randy first meet, then you're fine since all the lines Steve reads is from that. It also proves that what happens in the Junior Novel is an accurate reflection of the film (so again, if you've read that, then you won't be surprised by anything here). I also like Dan Scanlon's direction here; he really pushes for Steve to sound as friendly and as happy (or as he puts it, "almost obnoxiously happy) as possible. I've watched all of the B-rolls and that's the only one that features Randall specifically, but I haven't watched any of the other interviews for fear of spoilers. It seems like the material included in all of these videos is stuff we know of already so nothing major being revealed. It's all seeming very real now...

It's interesting what you said CD about Randall not celebrating or being overjoyed at Sulley's banishment, so his main motivation wasn't to 'defeat' Sulley- that does make sense. It's funny because I always got the feeling that Randall was almost disappointed that Mike and Sulley had to be banished; for him, it perhaps would've been more satisfying to be able to rub his success with the SE in their faces- he would've enjoyed being Sulley's superior, but of course him being banished means that they never really got a chance to see Randall succeed and so Randall never had a chance to rub it in their faces.
I agree with everything you've said there, PBL, it does make sense.
RB, I personally think of Randall as jealous of Sulley, but not of Sulley's success as a Scarer directly, but more of his general happiness, his life, the respect Waternoose afforded him, and so on. Those were all things Randall wanted, and Sulley seemed to have them the most out of everyone. I'd say we see real jealousy in that scene where Sulley and Waternoose are standing on the Scare Floor chuckling away, and Randall just glares at them bitterly before shouting at Fungus. So maybe Randall might have had an idea that something was going on in general, but I personally still think he was very, painfully jealous of Sulley's overall success and happiness. But, like everything else, it's all very open to interpretation.

"My lifelong best friend is right behind this door!"
At that point my brain exploded.
SERIOUSLY PIXAR. Seriously.
Also, the whole glasses thing really seems to be one of those situations where someone says something without realising the impact it might have on the other person- here's Mike making a relatively innocent remark, not the nicest of things but sort of fair, and there's Randy who clearly took it really to heart.
And I love his keenness to socialise- I know we already knew that he wanted to make friends but seeing it written like that really emphasises just how much he wanted to meet people and integrate and have a bit of fun alongside studying.
I also like the fact that Mike and Randall are paired by their size as well; again, this is something we've seen before, that all of the other Scare students are much bigger than them, but it's interesting that Randall, from such humble and nervous beginnings, was able to rise up as a truly great Scarer, whilst Mike had to change paths entirely.
And finally- "but this might be our only chance to get in with the cool kids". AWW. And he thinks baking cupcakes is going to get him in with the crowd?! Randy has to be the most naive monster ever, I mean his lack of comprehension of what most would consider 'cool' is beyond adorable. He must've been both sheltered and outcast as a kid.
Oh god, this is too much.

I really like that interpretation, especially considering Randall's line, "with this machine, we won't even need Scarers" (or something to that effect)- it was a line I never really got since I always figured that Randall would be at least somewhat attached to his role as a Scarer, but what you've said makes complete sense. I'd never really thought about it that way, but now you've said it, it seems so right!

Yeah, that makes sense, I agree. I guess it depends on how Mike words it as well- I'm curious to find out exactly what he says and how he says it to Randall.

Is it really a mistake though? I don't know, if I had a friend who could've done better at their degree due to a minor change like that I'd probably suggest it (in a nice and relatively sensitive way, though). If Randall had kept his glasses he probably wouldn't have gone far as a Scarer, so in this instance I'm tempted to say Mike's honesty was a good thing.

As much as I do think Randall wanted to help out with the energy crisis, I have to play devil's advocate and say I think his main motivation probably was to earn the respect of his peers, and that he was very much driven by jealousy and couldn't resist the chance to one-up Mike, Sulley, and everyone else who had ever put him down in the past. Don't get me wrong, the fact that he was going to potentially solve the energy crisis would probably have been the reasoning he used to justify the whole thing to himself, but I always got the feeling that he really just wanted to show everyone what he was 'made of', so to speak, and that even if the SE theoretically couldn't solve the energy crisis, he probably would've gone ahead anyway.
Though people do things for lots of reasons and those reasons change over time, so there's a chance that he genuinely focused on the whole 'solving the energy crisis' thing to begin with (and it's likely this is the approach Waternoose used to convince Randall to sign up in the first place) but as time went on and Randall got more and more stressed, with Sulley simultaneously seeming to become more and more successful, his original motivations might have changed. It's just that, in MI itself, Randall is very focused on the whole "people are going to look up to me" thing. But, again, this is just my speculation, and I agree that it's cool how Disney/Pixar have basically admitted that he did, on the whole, genuinely think of it as a good idea and it was (originally, at least) motivated by a good cause.

Wow, interesting that the Czech Republic are getting it first! Does this usually happen?
It does look like a strangely put together poster, especially considering Art's missing, but it's always nice for Randall to be included especially when the rest of the ROR gang aren't there.

Well, guys. Here's our first clue that Pixar might not be leaving us hanging when it comes to Randall's story... There's a Tumblr post that is essentially a review of the film from someone that went to a charity screening (or, rather, a friend of the person who wrote the review). Here's the link- and be warned, there are some minor spoilers in the review: thettc.tumblr.com/post/52142279042/my-good-friend-mike-kuentz-had-the-pleasure-ofThe most interesting thing I found was that it seems like there's going to be at least one more film in this 'franchise', and although nothing is directly said in terms of whether Randall is going to be involved, it does tie in with the way they've presented him in MU and the logical conclusion that they're not just going to leave his story as is. Of course they might well make a sequel or two that don't involve Randall at all, but considering MU that seems quite unlikely at this point... Squeee!

Not sure if that makes it official...name workings with Pixar are going weird. I mean the whole Jimmy Sullivan thing in the books (though if I recall in the trailer, Sullivan DOES call himself James, his proper first name, not Jimmy). I'm pretty sure in one of the most recent clips he calls himself 'Jimmy'- I think that's how he introduces himself to ROR (though I may be wrong, I don't have the greatest memory! Haha). But yeah, when it comes to these things I don't always take them as being cannon, and in my mind the 'T' thing is probably not quite right.

Well, here's the final trailer. www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBzPioph8CIWe really don't see any more of Randall aside from a different angle when he's sitting next to Mike in the lecture theatre, and there's also a shot of him in that flashcard scene with Mike, but we don't hear him say anything and they didn't show him disappearing again (although they did reuse a lot of other stuff they've shown in other trailers so I was surprised at there being almost less Randall in this one). But, hey ho, that's it I guess until the movie actually comes out!

Those increments look good, much better to me, and I also really like Coffee Fetcher, haha. I was thinking having 'Scare Assistant' for one of the lower ranks perhaps. Especially now we've got more increments, we have more chances to get creative! And mintygreen, I'm sure we can keep Head Servant in there for that purpose, LOL.
Also, I've changed the little news feed thing that shows up under the banner when you're on the front page. I've kept it simple with a little Randall in-joke for fun but, again, suggestions are welcome!

Accents

I have to admit, there's something about a really strong southern US accent that I just love. It's just sort of friendly and comforting.
If I'm honest I don't really know what a Canadian accent sounds like, or at least I might find it difficult to tell the difference between a northern US accent and a Canadian one, like you said mintygreen. But it's funny because a friend of mine has spent a year studying abroad in Alberta and when I've spoken to her recently she seems to have picked up some Canadian habits! (Or, rather, a stereotypical habit- the 'eh' thing, though I'm not sure whether everyone does it as much as she says they do, haha!)
My accent's pretty obviously English, and to English people, it's quite obvious I'm from the south of England. I have a habit of enunciating a lot.
But my favourite accent has to be Irish- there's something so cheeky and sexy about Irish accents!
Oh, and to be fair, Randall's accent is pretty beautiful too! I mean, of course it is, considering Steve voices him and Steve's voice is gorgeous, but Steve really added something to Randall's voice- I don't know what the difference is, but it's lovely.
