In this interview: www.traileraddict.com/trailer/monsters-university/interview-steve-buscemiNo spoilers, just an overview of his character as shy, nervous, "not really knowing his place", "a little insecure"- and he does mention that although Randy is not the Randall we see in MI, we see "a little inkling of what turns him". Steve seems to have a good hold on his character (even if he does refer to Randall as a 'villain' later on in the interview). I didn't realise Randall was Steve's first animated character which is pretty cool. Anyway, there are LOADS of other clips on that site, including this one here in which we actually get to see Steve perform some of Randy's lines: www.traileraddict.com/trailer/monsters-university/b-roll-iiConsidering we haven't actually heard Randy speak in the trailers (aside from "fear of THUNder!", haha) it's pretty amazing to see Steve read out some of his lines- there are some spoilers but if you generally know what happens when Mike and Randy first meet, then you're fine since all the lines Steve reads is from that. It also proves that what happens in the Junior Novel is an accurate reflection of the film (so again, if you've read that, then you won't be surprised by anything here). I also like Dan Scanlon's direction here; he really pushes for Steve to sound as friendly and as happy (or as he puts it, "almost obnoxiously happy) as possible. I've watched all of the B-rolls and that's the only one that features Randall specifically, but I haven't watched any of the other interviews for fear of spoilers. It seems like the material included in all of these videos is stuff we know of already so nothing major being revealed. It's all seeming very real now...

Ok, I was able to find the interview...but the B-roll, no go. Hopefully that'll follow soon (as I've noticed other line readings from other actors for the film)
Anyway...he talks briefly about Randall...mostly positive. I guess the "villain" note was just about what Disney thought of Randall at the time or something, as he said before...well...look at LG's sig ^0^ Also his mention of the RORs about how Randall "falls in with them". Kind of sounds like "falling in with a bad crowd" don't it?

Err, I gave another link in my first post- the second link is the one with Steve acting out some of Randy's lines (though at first we see John Goodman and Billy Crystal- Steve comes in at about 2 minutes). Unless you meant you couldn't load it? Yeah, perhaps referring to Randall as a 'villain' is almost an easy or automatic thing to do, and I agree that Steve's wording takes the blame off Randall and onto the 'crowd' he falls in with, definitely a good thing.

*shrugs* My dyslexic flash loader -_-
Automatic response probably, and it's not...I don't think it's professional, I guess, to retract what you said on-interview, so he just had to roll with it. He said it kind of fast and the purpose of what he was saying at the time was his gratitude for being in a Pixar film, in any way.

He seems to be quite fond and positive about Randall in general so it's all good.

Yeah, I just have to wait until a compatible one comes about.
Yes, I particularly like his little laugh at the start of the interview when he first describes (and thinks) about him heh hehehe.

Its cool to get to actually hear some more lines rather than just read them, I just wish we got to see them matched up with their clips.

Well, try your best to watch it ASAP- I think it's the one thing so far that's blown my mind more than anything else, for some reason, even more than seeing that clip of Randy getting shocked and turning invisible (though, to be fair, that was also mind-blowing considering it was our first glimpse of him in action).
All I will say is that a lot of the lines in the junior novel seem to have been directly used in the movie (at least, if the video with Steve is showing lines that made it into the final cut, but I'm guessing they probably did). I've watched the video again and again and I just can't comprehend that essentially it's Randall saying this stuff...It's so weird.
Plus Dan Scanlon is just SO into the whole thing, he loves Randall, even makes a comment about the whole cupcakes thing that shows how much he's fallen in love with the character...Aaah!

It's more that he's just so positive and enthusiastic about Randall, he really gets into the lines Randall has to say, he wants Randall to come across as cheerful and enthusiastic as possible. It really seems like it was Dan's idea to go in this direction with Randall in the first place (and if it wasn't, he's a massive fan of it!) because he doesn't want Steve to hold back in his delivery- he wants Randy to almost sound OTT in his desperation to come across well, in his eager-to-please-ness, haha.

Wow, so nice to see these clips! Got a good laugh from Dave Foley and Billy Crystal, too. I really get the impression that Scanlon(who is becoming my favorite Michigander)really likes Randall, so hopefully when the sequel is made, he will once again be at the helm. I think he's got a good "handle" on this character, and anyone else might undo the positive light that's finally been shown. Between him and Steve, Randall has the chance to really redeem himself once and for all! I've got more faith now that these guys aren't gonna let us down by never revealing what really happened to Randall. I did notice a slight difference in the accent Steve uses, though, when reading his lines; it's more of a Chicago or that Chicago-influenced Indianapolis accent that the slightly "twangier" southern Indiana accent he had before, which is interesting.

Yeah, I noticed a change in his accent too, PBL. In fact, it's not just his accent- I know the fact that his vocabulary is more traditional has been pointed out before, but I guess hearing Steve read out lines really brought it home; whereas Randall would perhaps say words and phrases like "why dontcha?" and "buster", things that have an almost, I don't know, Brooklyn feel to them (please correct me if I'm wrong- I'm no good at placing American dialects) Randy has such a different vocabulary that (so far) he's almost unrecognisable. I wonder whether there's a geographic basis to these changes, including the accent change, or if it's just the, er, winds of change, haha. Perhaps the more confident Randall finds it easier to throw slang around, whilst the insecure Randy prefers to stick to his more gentle lexicon?

Seems likely LG. Also, lets remember Monsters Inc. is in the bustling city of Monstropolis, and Randall was basically...well in "loner mode" so he had to pick up a couple things, probably a new accent too hehehe.

The future is very bright for Randall. I can't wait to see what more they have in store for him, beyond MU.
