Shoot, the monsters still apparently believe that certain kinds of MONSTERS are "creepy" and "bad" by default, and surely there has been efforts to change those attitudes, with little sucess, so it's going to take a whole lot longer to change things regarding attitudes about humans! pitbulllady I was not aware of such monster-monster prejudice. Could you cite some examples from the movie?

Could you cite some examples from the movie? Shortly after Randall pulls that little prank on Mike in the locker room, Mike calls him a "creep", which is someone who is "creepy" or repulsive in some way. WHY does Mike consider Randall to be repulsive? Immature, yes, but repulsive? In the door vault, Mike calls Randall "Lizard Boy". Now, Randall might have some physical characteristics in common with some lizards, but he is NOT a lizard, nor is he a "boy", since that technically means a male under the age of 18, or whatever is considered legal adulthood. Randall was 25. In the past, in the US, "boy" was a term applied to all African-American males, regardless of their age, by White people, and it was used as a put-down. More than once, as a child growing up, I'd hear a White person, more often than not someone I was related to, call a Black man "Monkey Boy", and of course, there was nothing at that time that the man could do about it. This seems to indicate that Mike has some big-time issues with reptilian monsters in general, not just with Randall. Randall is the ONLY reptile-like monster in the whole movie, if you do not count Celia Mae's snakes. There are lots of big furry ones, little blobby ones, tentacled monsters, slimy slug-like monsters, but no scaly monsters...except for Randall, so that makes him stand out in what would seem to be a very diverse crowd. In the aforementioned "2003 Annual", there is a picture of a bulletin board in the factory, with public service stuff on it, like bulletin boards in many workplaces. On it is a typed sheet proclaiming the formation of a company bowling team, and the nights it will meet. Handwritten, almost as an afterthought, are the words, "Slitherers Welcome", as though the original intent was to NOT allow "slitherers" to participate, but then somebody felt guilty, or got worried about some sort of backlash, and decided to try and be PC and add that in. pitbulllady

Interesting. I thought that "lizard boy" was just what Mike called Randall because he loathes him personally, like Morey Amsterdam's baldie jokes on the richard van Dyke show. Same with creep...Randall DOES have a repulsive relationship with Mike. I was born 1958 in Ohio, and never heard "boy" used to put down a Negro, so some of this may be my innocence. If reptiles are considered "bad", you would think that Watermoose would hire a different receptionist (who represents the company to the public) than celia, or at least require her to cut her "hair" or wear a hat. I do not have the 2003 Annual. Maybe it is just a reminder by Disney of how different the "people" are in Monster World, or maybe slitherers are specified because otherwise they may feel they may slow down the play (I can't imagine that blob monster who fell through the grating trying out for the team, just as I doubt "fire sneezer" would get a job in an explosives factory).

If they are going to turn the word into "richard" they could at LEAST maintain the capital letter! :-)

^_^ Ah nevermind, I can take care of these posts so we don't get in trouble LOL ^_^ Hmm? OTing isn't too bad, as long as you've got something to say in every post. If the conversation begins to turn into a conversation about something else that is worthy of its own thread, then, by all means, make a thread about it. ;D And tmazanec1, another example that could be considered as discrimination is just after Randall says 'it scares little kids AND little monsters', to which Mike replies, 'uh, I have allergies'. Putting that with the jumping and sliding away motion that Mike does, seemingly trying to get as far away from Randall as possible, and it could be interpreted that Mike is saying that he is, as such, 'allergic' to Randall.
