I should have brought my camera as well. Y'all would have loved to see the little kid with the big scorpion, or the other little kid sitting in a chair behind a vendor table with a Tegu lizard bigger than he was asleep across his lap! I actually almost brought home a Ball Python; some guy who breeds them had some extra captive-bred males that he wasn't going to breed anymore, since they were too "plain"(as in not albino or pastel or something). They were really fat and healthy, unlike many African imports, but I'm trying to phase out snakes that need all these fancy requirements, like heat lights and thermostats, in favor of native species that do quite well at normal room temperature. This guy was begging me to take one, free, but I had no set-up for it, and that's what costs so much with these types of snakes, the proper caging and so forth for it. There weren't that many people selling cages and supplies this time, since the biggest dealers for that were at the Sacramento show. I did find a good deal on the UBV lamps, though, and those suckers are usually really expensive.

Yeah I've spent more on Duchess since I got her in February than I have on the parrot, who I've had for 8 years. Thing is I was misinformed on exactly what heat ranges and stuff she should be at - by the guy who sold her to me, no less - and I actually bought a lot of the wrong stuff for her at first; then when I got my act together I had to buy a bunch of more stuff. The temperatures here in Sac are crazy, too, and my brother running the AC every day in the summer doesn't help. I've had a heck of a time with her. Anyways. I saw some cute kids-with-critters photo ops at the Sac show too, but I don't like to take pictures of strangers unless they volunteer. There was a teeny little girl walking aroung clutching a huge beardie to her chest, and there was a young boy with fancy walkingsticks all over his baseball hat. Those were the most memorable ones. And - I love Duchess, I do, but I seriously wish I would have gotten a beardie now instead. Don't tell her I said that.

Thank you, Joy! That made my day. That Water Monitor looks like the one I used to have, the one who ate Pit Bulls. They look so lazy and laid-back, it's hard to imagine that they can just explode into action like they do. I appreciate it, I really do! pitbulllady You're welcome. And I'm glad to hear you made it to the reptile show after all! That must have been a ton of fun.

I find it funny when a full grown man sqeals at the sight of a snake, and then a little girl goes to pick it up, no worries at all. ;D

Maybe it's because they don't really know if there is any danger, even if there isn't any danger to begin with.

You scared her...

Or to rephrase that...they know there isn't any danger, unlike people who project danger on harmless things. Which is quite silly and useless. I try to have patience with people like that but I find it hard sometimes.

Children aren't born with a fear of things like snakes or spiders; they have to learn this from their parents or from others around them. I DO think, though, that some people have a gene which causes them to really be drawn to and fascinated by such creatures. My parents, especially my mother, who was genuinely phobic of snakes, did their best to make me terrified of them as well, but as far back as I can remember I would defy their wishes, and I never was afraid of reptiles. I also have far outlived people who swore I'd be dead of snake-bite before I was 20. Kids who grow up with parents that like such animals are even more apt to like them, too. They learn, just like kids who grow up around dogs, cats, horses, or what-have-you, how to properly handle and care for such animals, for their safety and the animals'. Emperor scorpions seldom sting(though they sure will pinch the daylights out of you)and their venom is very mild, much less painful than a bee sting, so they can be safely carried around. I love to see children who are fascinated with such things, since they often make really good students in school, with a thirst for knowledge and a desire to share it.

It's annoying when you present the people who are afraid of reptiles and that sort of thing with a reason that makes sense and is obvious as to why they shouldn't be afraid of them, and they STILL persist that 'because it has scales it is dirty and scary'.
