And a bit bored. We all have our reasons for joining a board dedicated to Mr. Randall Boggs and just plain belonging to this fandom. What are your reasons? This topic is probably a clone of past threads, but I wasn't around then. Let's just do it again if it has. My two cents: The fandom grew on me and I joined this board not because I thought Randall was hot/sexy/attractive or the like, (as I read on the "Randall's truth and facts" thread) but because his character alone was interesting and definitely worth a deeper look. It wasn't until about a week later, I think, that I began to warm up to the guy, and it wasn't just for the complexity of his character this time. I think Mr. Boggs is indeed an alluring, if not a really, really, really, really hot lizard monster. I know some gals on this board would agree to that. Admit it! By the way, I've just had this nagging question concerning something most of you constantly claim... Randall's previous position as being the "top scarer", do you base that on the original storyboard concepts shown on the DVD with Sullivan being a janitor, or did I just miss something?

I was attracted to him 'cause I ended up getting bored and watching M.I. over and over and over ... and Mike REALLY started to annoy the crap outta me. The company play only went TOO far. I started wondering who my favorite really was, and I liked Fungus a bit, but then ... I dunno- I just wondered how the 'villain' Randall would feel from his P.O.V. I do this to a lot of real villains, and really, they have no justice but I love them anyway. All except Waternoose- I had arachnophobia till I liked Scroop. ^^ Randall's definitely not a villain ... but I love him anyway ^^; I place him along the lines of my non-villain fandoms, like Timon, Vinny, Clopin, Doppler, Grumpy, Ling, Batty(non-disney) and some others I may regret mentioning ^^;

I'll take this one... Yeah we discussed this before....so I'll go straight to your question, as I was the one who first made Randall's Top Scarering position known.
Half is based on fact, and the other common sense.
Within up-to-date books, it's said Sullivan has been Top Scarer for ONE YEAR. This is enforced by the fact that Sullivan's photos, in the movie, signify that he has had twelve ....
Randall MUST be Top Scarer before that, seeing as he has the best scareing abilities. With facts, this is proven to be true.
To add into the mix, heres some speculation.
Randall's life was...well...."easier" when he was Top Scarer. I don't want to say how just yet, figure he'd explain it first. So. His position could be used as "leverage". When he got Sullivan in M.I., Randall pretty much was on equal ground with him. But when Waternoose proposed his Scream Extractor idea, Randall didn't want any part in it. So what could Waternoose do to push Randall in? Oh. What's this? Sullivan and Randall seem to have a heated past between one another? Hmm. Maybe a little tip in the counter screams would solve that. In short, Waternoose made sure Randall got doors with less intank and gave Sullivan ALL the good doors. To enforce this into a fact, here's quotes:
"Hey Wazowski, nice job, those numbers are pretty sweet". "Slumberparty".
I prove my case. Oh yes. And I was the first to tell about this...

I love Randall because he's so different to any character I've ever seen in a film. He's like a sort of best friend to me, and I feel as though I have to comfort him. I am, in very many ways, different to him, and so I find his kind of personality fascinating, and also, the way he was treated in MI made me really feel for him. Also, he's just too darn CUTE! ;D

I totally fell for Randall the first time I saw him, though to be honest I had already heard, though some "Lilo and Stitch" fanfic writers, that this "Randall Boggs" character was H-O-T, and I naturally wanted to see what the big deal was; I mean, he was a MONSTER, for crying out loud-how can a MONSTER be "sexy" or "hot"? Well, needless to say, it only took one viewng of that DVD(I never saw the movie in theatres)to make me a believer!
One of the reasons I really like Randall is because I could see a lot of myself, and my past experiences at work, in him, and his situation. I've Been There, Done That, and I was not the nicest person to be around at the time because of it, either. I could relate to him and the stress he had to have been experiencing on a very personal level. I also have a penchant for rooting for the underdogs, and if Randall wasn't an underdog, I don't know who is.
About HOW we know that Randall was once the Top Scarer and Sullivan got promoted from a janitor directly to the Top Scarer position, well, it comes from different sources. When I first became interested in Randall, I did a random search on "Monsters, Inc." and came up with a VERY extensive website put up by two of Pixar's animators/writers, giving a LOT of background information on the movie and the many script versions and even filmed versions it went through before the final one which we see today. This was where I first came across the statement that Randall was the Top Scarer, and Sulley was a janitor. IMBD.come has also information confirming that Sulley was a janitor, and even had a pic of him pushing around this little janitor's cart, with the mops and such, and this board expression on his face. Mike was actually RANDALL'S Scare Assistant, and all three of them were friends, believe it or not, although they were always arguing and Randall was always trying to be the boss of the others. Sulley was afraid of human children, which is why he was not a Scarer, and it was actually RANDALL who tried to convince him to become a Scarer. It was not until a human child got loose in the factory, and the three of them had to team up and stop this "threat" that they learn that cooperating without arguing is the best way to solve problems, nobody on a real team is more important than anyone else, Sulley overcomes his fear of human children, they ALL learn that human children are NOT toxic and dangerous, and laughter is stronger than screams. I'm guessing that the game, "Scream Arena" is based upon this older script, which actually DID get filmed, since in the game Randall is still working at M.I. and the relationship between him, Mike and Sulley, while competitive, is still good-natured. HOWEVER, Mr. Eisner of Disney Co. didn't like this version. it was too sweet, and had too good a moral lesson(s), and made the company's CEO look like less than a Good Guy, since HE was the one who brought the kid in. There was no clear-cut villain, something which Pixar was against having, so Eisner made them change it. Randall became the "villain", to take the attention away from Waternoose. That decision was mainly due to the fact that Randall was reptilian, and you know it's easy to hate something with snake or lizard characteristics, so they are normally going to be seen as "evil". Unfortunately, this website has been taken down, but it was invaluable in finding out the background of the characters and the story. For Randall to have been so desparate to make it to the Top Position would have made more sense if he'd been there once, and been knocked off unfairly. And, I'm with Sean on the fact that it cannot be a mere coincidence that as soon as Randall overtook the Top Scarer position, Sulley "just happened" to walk in on a slumber party...yeah, right.

I joined because Randall is one of those characters who really "got me" and stuck with me! When I saw him in the theatre, I was attracted to him; not just for his, well, good looks--but also for his whole personality, his situation, my compassion for him and my anger that he was made out to be a villain by so many people. He's a very unique character and one day I just decided that I liked him so darn much, I better run a search and see if there was ANYbody else out there who agreed with me. Lo and behold, there were! A very nice board with mighty fine Randall fans. ;D So I figured I couldn't not join.

True so very true... Although I was the one who found Sullivan's year "aheadness" and a few other things..... What? Just wanted to say....
Hmph....How could Sullivan ever become Tops Scarer on his own? Beating his MENTOR in such a short time? Yeah right.....

Me? Well I started to love Randall since I got the video of Monsters Inc. (My family didn't had a DVD player back then.) And I had always been interested in reptilian animals, and...I don't know. I JUST LOVE RANDALL!!! ;D

Ditto. It's so weird though- whenever I go to school, I feel like a bit of a freak, because although my friends know of Randall and that I like him, they can't seem to understand why. Also, I've never physically met anyone else who does, so for a while I was thinking, 'am I the only one?' We didn't get the internet for a long time after it first came out, so I couldn't search for you guys, but when I did...I remember looking forward to coming home from school every day just to come on the board. ;D

I joined for a number of reasons. One of these is the voice of dear Randall is that of one of my most favorite actors: Steve Buscemi, so that alone made me an instant fan. Another thing is he's smart. Like scary smart. Imagine building a machine like the Scare Extractor basically on your own. That could take months, perhaps even a couple of years. Now imagine working on one thing that complicated for that long, and keeping it secret. That takes intelligence, the kind of intelligence that kind of makes a person a little crazy, and endurance as well.
Not to mention that chameleon thing he does is pretty d@mn cool as well.

Yeah, it is! ;D And you're right- Randall IS intelligent, yet at the same time he isn't like, nerdy intelligent, like Fungus. He's cool intelligent. ;D

Randall's intelligence is a very practical intelligence, since he can actually DO something with it. He can invent and build things, and probably fix things that are broken, which sure can come in handy at times. He is still very naive, though, which is typical for a 20-something who hasn't been part of the "Rat Race" for that long yet.

Yeah, I mean, he seems as though he's been through a lot already for someone of his age, yet isn't completely familiar with things when it comes to corrupt corporations, etc. I don't think he's REALLY emotionally-developed, either- it seems easy enough for him to show his anger, but other emotions look harder for him, not only because of what was happening during the film, but because of his experiances previously.

Pretty much my thoughts, too. *nods* And I completely agree that Randall's intelligence is MUCH more of the practical type than Fungus'. Fungus might be good for the nitty-gritty little details that have to be addressed, but he'd probably never be able to finish anything if just left to his own devices. ~Light Rises
