I was watching Monster's Inc and noticed Randall had a lot of scars. Did anybody ever wondered how Randall got those scars?

Uhh...well....I would get Ran...but he's asleep...late movie night we had....anyway let me see.
Well...given the fact that Randall has had a rough life, and the fact that he's an orphan....wouldn't surprise one that he had scars. But given how some of them are old and some maybe be recovering, Randall had always been picked on at school, sometimes it went TOO far, and he got into fights MANY times as a teen (seeing as how his anger and age seemed to be at equal level) for other's racist believes....
Pitbulllady'll come here when she arrives, probably stating that Pixar wanted to show that Randall was a fighter and got into trouble allot.
But it was mainly, in his younger years, racism got him into trouble. Where as his little anger fuse got the better of him as he matured (then again, Randall "grew up" faster than anyone else).
So those scars came from an amount of things. Three, for sure, were from a fight he got into at a bar(not what you think, Randall doesn't drink, it'll be told about later).

We'd discussed Randall's scars waaaay back when we still had the old board. Most people don't notice them, so I have to commend you for your observance, Veg! He especially has noticeable scars on his neck and his sides, along his ribcage. The ones on his ribs are intriguing because I once met a guy who had an almost-identical set of evenly-placed scars along both sides of HIS ribs(he wasn't wearing a shirt, since this IS the Deep South, and we have plenty of hot weather and rednecks...). Nosey me had to ask him, and he told me that he'd been in a serious car wreck several years prior, and suffered a double lung collapse, or double pneumothorax. The ER staff had to surgically insert five chest tubes on each side of his chest to relieve the air and blood building up inside his chest cavity, which was preventing his lungs from being able to reinflate and was putting pressure against his heart. I immediately thought of Randall's scars as this guy told me the horror he went through after that accident, and I can't help but wonder if something similar had happened to Randall in the past, either an severe chest injury or double pneumonia severe enough to warrent chest tubes. The ones on his neck are less even, more likely the result of accidental injury(perhaps at the same time as the lung injury)but the ones on each side of his ribcage look very precise, very symmetrical, so they are more likely the result of a medical procedure, even if Pixar DID just intend them to make Randall look like a scrapper and a trouble-maker. It's odd, though, that if they intentionally made him look like that, that they didn't make the scars MORE noticeable, or put any on his face(where you'd most expect a brawler to have scars). Most people, like I said, don't even notice them.

That's because Pixar didn't intend to put them there....
"I can hardly remember EACH AND EVER scar I've had but...yeah I do remember a few....but....I'm not sure...but....maybe some of them...some of them might've involved my parents....NO NO...not that they treated me....that way....they loved me right? But....maybe something happened....like the car crash....not that that may be the reason but...."
Well...Pitbullady...remember you can't say that he doesn't have a scar on his head NOW.

That's a point- when it comes to an MI sequel, that scar will be very obvious in every scene that Randall's in (if he's in the movie.)

Yeah. Not only does that headscar, vertical from front to forehead for those who don't know, become a constant reminded to Randall of....his "arrival" in our world....but it is also what cost him his special...gift.

And Randall would be lost without that...Must've been hard for him- on the one hand, being able to shift must've been both amazing and useful, yet on the other, it would've branded him as even more of a freak.

But it's true- even though being able to shift must've been amazing, a lot of other employees probably found it as another excuse to make fun of Randall.

Actually no Cool. Nobody dared say a word about Randall, even behind his back, since he could always be right there behind them.

I'd mentioned this before; Randall is the only character in the movie who has an unusual, even "Super", ability like that. He can change color, and also climb on and cling to walls and even ceilings. No one else can do anything like that, so that would have also made him "different". While others might not have talked about him at work, due to being worried about him being behind them, they probably did once they got home. pitbulllady

"Yeah they did.....remember everyone...."I" am the one who made blending a Scare Tech. the "Boggs Quick Reveal" remember? I was the first.....and yes...the...only one....to be able to do such a thing..................ehh....sorry I...just miss being able to use it like I could years ago.....uh...Sean?"
Oh right uh... Wel...there are others that can climb on walls and maybe even ceilings, though it's not like they would want to...but then again....

I can't believe how some employees would treat Randall different just because he looks different from the rest of them. I mean, can't they all just get along for once?

Uh Veg.... You know the C....was the....Civil Rights? Right? Heck...HUMANS don't get along well either....there is still racism. It's only natural that Monsters share the same.
Besides....Reptiles are looked on as evil incarnets....if only I could tell you guys what happened sooner...but it has to wait...

I can't believe how some employees would treat Randall different just because he looks different from the rest of them. I mean, can't they all just get along for once? HUMANS treat other humans badly if they look or act different, believe me! Since monsters ARE descended from humans, and they act like us, it would make sense that they'd share our negative traits, too. Like Sean and I have often pointed out, if monsters have anywhere NEAR the bias against reptiles that many human cultures do, any monster who looks reptilian is going to catch you-know-what for most of his or her life, for that reason alone. If reptilian monsters were NOT a minority, at least in Monstropolis, I would expect to see them better represented in the movie, with more of them being seen. There are lots of those little oblong blobs with legs and various eye counts, like Mike and Fungus, lots of slimy slugs, like Roz and the janitor Juan Chalubi, lots of tentacled monsters, like Celia Mae and Waxford and the octopus chef at the restaurant, plenty of big furry things like Sulley and George, and big rubbery things like Pete Ward and that dude with all those eyes all over his body, but only one scaly monster in the entire movie-and HE was depicted as the Bad Guy. pitbulllady
