Thanks for the very well thought out response, pitbulllady. I'll definitely put that point down. In the meantime, I'll be writing it just for some 'tainment - it's the very first novel I've planned to write, so there's a big chance it might not be perfect. I mean, how far can you get after taking a Freshman English class in high school?

Oh believe me...writing is a creative progress and you can't overly teach that -_-. Believe me, wrote allot myself, and some teachers don't care to look at them. Though I do recall one teacher enjoying my Beowulf bit ^_^

^ Beowulf? That's cool!
Anyway, I just went back and read over pitbulllady's post, and it seems that Randall would have to be pretty good with mechanical engineering in order to build the Scream Extractor. In my novel, I was thinking of having him graduate from the Monstropolis Institute of Technology, a school whose human world parallel would be the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, prior to getting a job as a scarer. Would that be plausible?

I was nearly suggesting the possibility that the government could have been funding him or possibly gave him the idea to build it. Waternoose isn't one who strikes me as one to know much about construction. So he either obtained the plans from some other person or it was Randall invention in the first place. But then the question remains that how would Waternoose learn of Randall's device and why would he be building it in company ground without Waternoose's consent. So it either had something to do with a higher power or Waternooose met with Randall about it (or vise/versa). I'd be talking in circles if I went much further than this. As to the subject of being "clean" I was talking about the fact that it seemed set up well and seemed placed together correctly. No parts hanging out or missing pieces. Smooth metallic surface. It seemed rather complete to me. Alas that is my personal opinion though. Good point about the computers but they weren't intending for them to become so small over time. Just look at some of the old pictures of "Home Computers of the Future." EDIT: That would be plausible for Randall to have went through Engineering School. We can all agree that he at least studied up on it a bit. I don't think it would be much of a stretch. You could probably start Randall rivalry with Sully when he starts Scare training... Perhaps the reason for his job switch was that his fellow engineers didn't trust him as much as they did non reptilian workers to? Eh. I'll stop now, it's your novel

Actually the government was probably unaware of Waternoose's involvement...though that suspecion should mainly be directed in a certain area ^_-
Well reptilian prejudice may have limited Randall in attending high-class schools unless he got lucky...

^ Don't those kind of colleges like having minorities among their student body to expand the range of nationalities - or in this case, species - covered? XD There seems to be a lot of hype at college admissions offices over African-American students recently, and the latter face a significant amount of prejudice...

^ Don't those kind of colleges like having minorities among their student body to expand the range of nationalities - or in this case, species - covered? XD There seems to be a lot of hype at college admissions offices over African-American students recently, and the latter face a significant amount of prejudice... In the US, Affirmative Action laws can help get minority students into college, BUT they don't guarantee that they will still be treated with dignity or respect. Unfortunately, those same laws also create an atmosphere of students being accepted purely based on race, with no regard to academics. Some students take advantage of that to goof off, while other minority students are really conscious of that and struggle hard to overcome the attitude of the general public that they only got there because of those laws, not because of their achievements. They really push themselves hard to try to prove that they really deserve to be there on their own merits and are just as bright and capable as anyone else, and I believe that Randall would have been comparable to those students. He was trying to prove to the world that being of a minority didn't mean he was not capable of doing just as much, or just as well, as anyone else, so it's like he was trying to overcome that stigma. pitbulllady

I always considered him the kind of person who likes to prove things to himself not others. In the sense that prejudice probably wouldn't bother him as much as it would others who enjoy friendly support. The "I am my own best and only friend" persona fits into this. A lot of people, especially intelligent individuals would develop that attitude in life having to put up with with no one's company.

Hmm... well, in that case, I have the following information on Randall's history:
Randall was a foster kid, and was constantly being sent back and forth between relatives who didn't care what happened to him. Since he was of the reptilian species, a minority which was badly prejudiced in the monster world, he faced bullying and scorn many times throughout grade school. Wanting to prove his worth to both himself and others, he graduated as valedictorian of his high school class and ended up majoring in Mechanical Engineering at the Monstropolis Institute of Technology, a highly prestigious and well-known school. Unfortunately, the amount of prejudice he faced never declined, and his fellow engineers didn't trust him as much as he was a reptilian - that was how he became a scarer at Monsters Incorporated as a last resort.
^ That's all the details I have so far, but I have a feeling I'm going to need even more...

Hmm...always thought Affirmitive Action was just for jobs...
More? ^_^ Why not ^_^ Lets see....well for one, Randall probably had Scarer in mind as his position ^_^ Of course, being a mechanic for a future upstage career in making new scare technology might've been a future goal ^_^

By the way, did you know that Randall has a Facebook? It was weird... I searched for him, found him, and then added him for the heck of it.

XD Yes, Randall does have a Facebook - I typed his name into the search box on the left-hand column beneath the Facebook logo, and it came up with him. So far he hasn't responded to my friend request... yet...
