I motice that monsters seldom wear clothing. This might be due to their different anatomies...if each suit of clothing has to be designed for each monster from scratch, that might make clothing unrealistic. The monster world might also lack animals or plants that produce cotton, silk, etc., and not have big animals, limiting them to monster leather, which they would understandably be reluctant to use. This might give a hint of where Monstropolis is located. Assuming the geography and climate is dimilar to Earth's, you would want an area that has little but steady rainfall (for growing crops but not frequently bothering monsters who would like to stay dry) and has temperatures high enough for the cold blooded monsters like Randall, but cool enough for warm blooded furry monsters like Sully. Anyone have a clue? Also, our cities tend to grow on coasts or rivers, which might be another hint.

Well, firstly, Randall isn't actually cold-blooded. He may LOOK reptiliian, but there are many points throughout the movie that prove that Randall is not actually cold-blooded, for example, when he opens the door to the Himalayas for Waternoose to push Wazowski and Sullivan through, a blast of VERY cold air hits Randall square on, and he isn't perturbed at all. If he were cold-blooded, he would go into some kind of shock, (the technological term slips me) and he would die. I'm sure Pitbulllady can explain in more detail, but you get the gist.
As for the geography of Monstropolis- the map shown in the reception of MI has a world map that, as far as I can remember, does look very similar to our world map.
And as for clothes, well, some Mons do wear clothes- Roz, Waternoose, Celia- but you're right, not every Mon does. I think it makes sense for Mons with wealth to wear clothes, like Waternoose, as they could afford to have it tailor made, but in some cases, there might be a particular dominating species of Mon that have clothes made comercially due to their numbers.

Yeah, clothes would have to be made from square zero. They would be status symbols. Watermoose certainly. Celia would not be rich, but she represents the Company to the public, so maybe that is her uniform. Roz is fairly high up in Management (I wonder if the CDA got her her job. She is number 001, and in an undercover operation. Wonder how Watermoose felt about hiring her if so). Of course, as an undercover agent she would have to have a valid reason to wear clothes, not just that she is 001 (which would be top secret).

If you'll notice, Roz DOES have breasts, so this would necessitate her wearing some sort of top to avoid being indecent. Most of the monsters, like most animals here in the Human World, probably have all their uhm, "naughty bits"-inside their bodies, except when in actual use, so there's no need to wear clothing for modesty's sake. In mild weather, there's no need to wear them for protection from the elements, and some, like Sulley, have built-in protection from extreme temperatures.
Randall is NOT cold-blooded, by the way, as LGB-B has pointed out. I keep and breed real reptiles as a hobby, so I'm very familiar with reptile metabolism. There is no way at all that any reptile, with their dependency on outside heat sources and their three-chambered hearts, can be as active as Randall is without building up lethal levels of lactic acid in their muscles and blood streams. Any real ectothermic creature would also have gone into instant thermal shock from even that brief exposure to the icey blast from the Himalayas as Randall opened the door, yet he was unscathed. In one picture on the old "Randall Fans United" site, you can also see, as Randall takes a deep breath during his blending practice prior to starting his workday, that he has a physical feature that most reptiles(with the exception of crocodilians, which are more closely related to birds than to other reptiles)do not have-a muscular diaphragm for breathing. That's pretty much a mammalian feature, so while Randall might LOOK superficially like a reptile, he's probably biologically more like us mammals, in terms of his metabolism and internal structure. It's also obvious, from the leaves changing colors in that scene in which Mike and Sulley walk to work, that Monstropolis has a temperate climate, and this would mean some cold weather, at least, during winter. Any reptile is going to have to hibernate for several months during that period, even if able to spend most of their time indoors, since the reptilian hibernation cycle is not so much dictated by temperature, as by length of daylight vs. length of night. As the nights get longer, their brains simply begin to shut down their bodies, and they cannot do anything about it. My snakes all hibernate even though they live indoors and are kept warm all winter long, for example. If Randall were a reptile, he'd have to take several months off each year to SLEEP, and what company is going to hire someone who has to do THAT?

I've noticed that some of the clothing is suited to what job the monsters do, like Tony at the grocery store wears a kind of apron. Of course like you explained above, Roz NEEDS to wear clothing .

I can't help but get a chuckle out of this thread, as I'm reminded of that episode of "Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends", in which Mac tries to sabotage the adoption of many Imaginary Friends on "Adopt-A-Thought Saturday". One of his efforts includes trying to trick the old rabbit Imaginary Friend, Mr. Herriman, into going inside the house by telling him something having to do with clothes, to which Mr. Herriman informs him that most of the Imaginary Friends are nude, anyway. THAT wasn't funny, as such, but the end credit scene that the show's creators originally planned WAS. It was this: same scene with Mac and Mr. Herriman, only every time after that in which an Imaginary Friend was shown, there'd be one of those black "censor bars" over his/her crotch area, like they use on tv(in the US, anyway)whenever there' a nekkid person and they can't show those parts on tv! According to Lauren Faust, one of the head writers for the show, when they showed Wilt(who is tied with Randall for my pick of all-time sexiest characters), they had a really LONG censor bar for him, lol! Unfortunately, Cartoon Network would not allow them to show it, so they had to resort to showing Bloo dancing on the stairs. Just reading this thread, I can't help but picture a similar bunch of out-takes in which the characters from Monsters, Inc. are running around with similar black censor bars over uh, sensitive areas!

The thought of MI characters having the censor sounds EXTREMELY funny ;D.

This thread DID suddenly remind me of the "Disney Adventures" comics featuring a pre-movie "Monsters, Inc." comic. I still have it somewhere. Randall, it turns out, wears PAJAMAS to bed, the sort of button-up, two-piece pj's that a lot of guys wear(yeah, the top has two sets of sleeves and pants have two sets of leg openings, plus one for his tail), those that don't sleep in the buff, or just their undies, anyway! Randall also sleeps in a regular bed, under the covers, which really proves his warm-bloodedness, since the main reason he'd wear pj's OR get under the covers would be to keep warm while sleeping, by holding in his own body heat. Oh, yeah, he sleeps with the tip of his tongue sticking out, like a puppy or kitten, lol! Sorry, had to throw that in, since us chicks dig stuff like that! It would seem that he mainly goes about sans clothing when he's at work, which would make sense, when you consider that Randall's work involves being able to blend in with any background, to achieve a scare. If he went into some kid's room wearing, say, a t-shirt and jeans and a couple of pairs of high-top Chuck Taylors(trying to picture Randall wearing Wilt shoes), I'm not sure the effect would be the same. Maybe some kids would be more scared by what appeared to be a bunch of clothing that suddenly sprang to life, but I don't think it would have quite the same impact as this set of knife-like teeth and blazing emerald eyes suddenly opening in what appeared to be the wall! It's quite possible, that once he clocked out(at least, before he got started on that machine and had to stay in the building after officially clocking out), Randall put on a regular set of clothes and headed home. He wouldn't have been wearing pj's for modesty, even if something DID show that needed to be covered up, since he obviously lived alone and had no one to hide anything from...or at least, until Mike and Sulley broke in his house/apartment.

Bingo... Though I haven't found pics yet, I'm getting close to...found out Randall, at least notiably, appears in three stories in the whole of Disney Adventures: Can-Taminated ( I have this one) Sic Day A Sticky Situation
....For most things I would think Sic Day might be the one.

"Disney Adventures" is no longer published. HOWEVER, there is a thread on Pixar Planet's forum that there will be a series of comics released, presumably as regular comic books, that will feature several Pixar movies, including Monsters, Inc.. They are supposed to be released in March of this year, with The Incredibles being the first. It waits to be seen, though, if they will continue with the "Randall-as-evil-to-the-core-bad-guy", or even feature him at all. pitbulllady
