Just something fun, we know alot of us think Randall didn't have a family (or at least not one to think of), but I'm talking about more slightly funny theories and things rather than sad ones.
For instance, for a while I enetertained the possibility when I was younger that Celia and Randall had a 'thing' once. Perhaps a brief fling. Possibly Wasoski has issues with his ego partially due to that?
I think the idea of Randall as a 'playa' or whatever is pretty funny too. So who else- Sheri Flint? Heh.
Any other (humourous) theories about Randall, other characters or the monster world in general?

Some aren't so much theories but bits and pieces I've picked up from various Disney sources. For instance, Sulley has a HORRIBLE phobia of going to the dentist and will put it off even if he has a really bad toothache, until the pain is just too much. MIKE(no real surprise here, is there?)has just as bad a phobia of dogs, any size, any kind. Mike was also born with TWO eyes, which gradually merged into one(and he calls RANDALL creepy??).
I think that Ms. Flint is not that happy with her Scarer Instructor position. She kinda radiated that "burn-out" vibe in the movie. She was probably a Scarer at one time, but was placed in her current position for whatever reason, and was replaced as a Scarer by Randall, who we know HAD been a Scare Instructor himself. She could harbor some resentment of him the way that he does of Sulley, since he basically took her job. Being a Scarer carries a lot more status than being an instructor, after all.

Funny theories? Hmm....ok interesting. I'll shelf facts and such...which is good, cause I need to -_-
*laughs* Actually that would have been possible. If you ever took a look at my New Years Story, Randall indeed WAS a better guy in the past, and Celia was actually one of the few to notice.
How about Betty? ^0^

All interesting! And I'll have to check out that story RB.
I do like the idea of pairing Celia with Randall for some reason. She's fiery! I didn't think much of her at first when she was making googly eyes with her 'bear', but her yelling at Mike about sushi was pretty interesting and her idea on the fake 'beaten the scare record' announcement was smart. She's definitly not an airhead.
So yeah. She grew on me. I just think when it comes to Mike it's more of a 'there's no accounting for taste'. But hey, it's her life.
Betty? Heh. Possible. She seems nice enough, though we've not much to go on.
MIKE seems to fancy himself as a flirt- what with Roz and all.
Perhaps THAT'S the real source of Randall and Mike's rivalry? Mike THINKS he's the Casanova of the company but in reality (before the scream extractor at least)... it might have been RANDALL? And Mike is annoyed by that?
Hey. It's possible right?
Other theory:
Scarers and assistants recieve minimum wage right? So how do Sulley and Mike afford that very nice apartment? A part of it could be the fact that pulling both wages together can afford them a better place than someone living alone, but it's still a bit too upmarket IMO, and I doubt at that age they get THAT much help from parents, a little in emergencies perhaps and even when they first moved jobs, but not on THAT scale but also there's the idea that scarer of the month came with a CASH prize.
After a few months of them constantly getting this prize, Mike convinces Sulley they should move to a better place since they've got the cash to get 'the place they deserve'. The money helps them pay off alot of the monthly rent on the place. The cash part of the prize might have been a recent 'incentive' the board set up to get more screams in too. Or might have always been there. Or even the original cash prize was increased alot. So Sulley and Mike DO have some more extra cash than perhaps they are used to. Sulley was more or less happy enough with the security this extra money could provide, and doesn't spend much of it (perhaps a part of him thinks that EVENTUALLY they will not get it and they're not going to be able to assume that they can always win, and they might even have to move out again, but Mike would whine if they moved earlier than was strictly necessary).
Mike however spends HIS extra money on a nice and shiney car.

Also (my computer froze, it's why I'm back, it happened before I could type this out too), this next theory is more 'interesting' than funny. (Then again, the last theory I had wasn't funny really, just a possible explanation.)
I think the monster world is the LITERAL parallel of our own planet. I mean to say if we were in Universe 'A' the Monster World is literally the earth of Universe 'B'. The reason for this is that it seems the monsters do have animals which exist HERE and even call them by the same names (they have sushi, and wasn't one of the cereal ingredients puffer fish or something?).
My theory is that just like in the Sci-Fi movies, this earth was exactly the same evolution as ours in terms of flora, fauna, plate tectonics, environment etc etc. except for one thing. In some cases it's that the Nazis won WW2 (or whatever)- but the major difference in Earth 'B' was FAR larger:
It had no sentient life forms at all. Then the monsters came in.
This does mean however, that their world might not be an EXACT copy in terms of flora and fauna due to the different decisions both monsters and humans have made since then. For instance, Monsters don't seem to have domesticated wolves into dogs at all. Plus for all we know THEIR dodo could be alive and kicking whereas their pigeons are all extinct. Things like that. Plus, they may have chosen different areas to set up their cities compared to us. (But I DO think Monstropolisis would be in the country which is the equivilant of our America). Of course it's also possible monsters don't have 'nations' and if they do, the borders could be completely different. (Perhaps 'Monster Europe' is all as one collective or something).
Other interesting theory: Monsters would possibly be weirded out by human versions of racism if they knew about it, since our own physical differences are far less wide ranging compared to monsters. This is possible even if monsters even have their OWN version of racism.
It's like you sometimes also see in Sci-Fi- they come across an alien race who hate each other and distrust each other because one set has tails and the other doesn't (as an example), or even just for the size of their NOSE. The (usually human) hero cries out at their stupidity, but their smarter (usually alien but sometimes also human) friend, who has knowledge of the human race him or herself basically sums it up in:
"Your lack of foresight into your/our OWN species' stupid actions is disturbing."
(Not those EXACT words perhaps, and they might be less eloquent. Blame Star wars.)

You...didn't notice it? It's here on the board 0_0 Kinda my latest M.I. work 0_0 Ahh well I should be use to it -_-
I would think in his Top Scarer days, Ran might have gotten girls without even trying ^0^ And apparently since Mike can't be a Top Scarer, that's something he'd never see....hence even more so a desire to ride Sullivan's success.
Actually Top Scarers are also entitled to...lets see...product placement (with use of celebrities), magazine shoots, interviews...what have you. It's not exactly a pay increase, but blips and blips of profit increase. The media goes crazy for Top Scarers...and like the assitants, flock to whomever is on top. Sullivan probably likes his apartment, and considers it homely....maybe due to because it's his own place since he moved to Monstropolis proper....and even WITH the increase prize of being Top Scarer, Wazowski digs into his pockets, and even if Sullivan WANTED to move...with Wazowski nearby....*shakes head* ---------------- The Monster World runs on a parallel...and it's Night and Day are reversed for us. It's been taken that Monstropolis is essentially like New York...big city with many newcomers and industries. And with that...it's day there, while night in the exact same time-zone as the actual New York (Eastern Seaboard). This of course makes it easier for scare industries, as Monstropolis's work hours in the morning have them scare at night. The actual making of the world itself....hm.....now that's something.
Well they do...Randall happens to be on the sad recieving end of that.

It is interesting.
I more or less see the Monster World as Earth 2.0. It was the same as ours in everyway...
Except there were no humans (or monsters, until the monsters themselves arrived). Like I said- quite Sci-Fi-ish. A parallel world where almost everything is the same except perhaps for that one little detail which results in a pretty damn big change. So monsters perhaps don't have dogs because unlike humans they never 'bothered' with that. The banana might not look all nice and yellow like ours, but instead look like the 'blob' it was before humans decided to 'select' certain features. Their fruit and veg and everything may be VERY and even completely different because although they went for agriculture on some level like humans, they selected DIFFERENT wild plants with which to base their crops on. Things like that. Also, some animals and plants which are extinct in OUR world may still be around in theirs. And vice-versa.
(That could make things interesting in monster-human relations if they ever got onto a level of diplomacy like that. In the conservation, biological and agricultural fields. NOT just the possibilities when it comes to the fact monsters use clean energy etc.)
In of itself, the dimensional barrier between Earth and the Monster World must be incredibly THIN and it's so EASY to create portals (at least for the monsters... could humans however eventually figure this out? The monsters had to get there SOMEHOW all those years ago after all... probably by accident partially... did monsters perhaps find some way to prevent that? -Seal that old pathway up?).
All these portals don't really seem to cost them that much energy- if it did the whole way of getting energy would be too inefficient for it to work for too long. EThey can turn them on and off like that without thinking about it much.
Monsters Inc is interesting in that it mixes a tiny smidge of fantasy (monsters themselves which scare the kids in bedrooms) with a bit of Sci Fi (portals, another world, another dimension, monsters originally evolved on our planet with us). But honestly, it doesn't feel that much like a fantasy or a Sci Fi, the monsters seem very human. If that makes sense.
I could see Randall and Celia even having a 'flirty' thing if not a fling or relationship itself. Perhaps a good working 'aquaintenceship' at least.
The idea that Sheri resents Randall is also interesting. She really doesn't seem to like her job, does she?
This is interesting: we actually don't SEE any actual female scarers on the job. Betty is the only one of the floor- and she's an assistant.
Any theories surrounding THAT? Is it just that less females apply or something else?

I noticed that almost instantly. Probably just pairing, but still, I hardly notice any female characters in the film, but then again, some of the characters do not look female and it would be, uh, difficult to check unless you actually spoke to them ;D.
As for theories, it does not relate to any of the characters shown, but I can just imagine the Loch Ness Monster being banished to the Scotland highlands with a few issues about actually fitting through the door ;D. After all, a normal Elasmosaur would have been large!
For some reason, I thought that Mike was raised by a single parent, but maybe that is not true, as since some of you have pointed out he has the symptoms of an only child, which may have added more to the equation with both parents being at the scene. (I am also an only child, yet I don't think I show off as much as Mike!). I think I only thought of this because we only hear (as in a mention) and see his mother in the film. Sulley's father was included in the 'Official Guide' if I remember... his horns inherited from his father's side, and his fur from his mother.

The "Official Guide" does mention Sulley's father and mother, but doesn't state that his father was still alive or that he and Sulley's mother were still together, only that Sulley inherited his horns from his dad's side and his color from his mom. And actually(yes, I know I'm responding to Mentalguru as well), the notion of parallel universes which can eventually be accessed, and in which the differences beteen those other Earths and OUR Earth might be slight, is not as far-fetched or Sci-Fi as it seems. Many prominent astrophysisists of today have developed theories as to how these other universes can exist and can be accessed in the future, and perhaps already have been. This concept is supported by many in the scientific community. In the future, possibly in your lifetime, though probably not in mine, we will actually be able to travel back and forth between this and one or more other Earths. It is not at all unreasonable to believe that denizens of at least some other universes have already mastered this. pitbulllady

Heh, that sound pretty interesting- other dimensions etc. So in this case at least Monsters are more advanced then humans technologically, as well as in ENERGY source terms (come on, next to fossil fuels, using energy from screams or laughter is WAY more impressive, not to mention the fact it's clean etc. etc. as well as other benefits).
Of course, they might not have an internet perhaps. Like I said, monsters have probably made different decisions than humans so although even if it IS Earth 2.0, it would be different in some ways other than the fact that there are monsters as the sentient beings on the planet instead of humans.
I also did this in my story, this next theory- but basically I made Sulley's dad as a scarer. Sulley is also at that age when... well parents are perhaps getting older and if his dad is a bit 'chubby' or not very fit or something he might... (well you know. Even if he's VERY healthy, it's still possible for these nasty 'surprises' to happen). So that was the reason he entered into iscaring later in life compared to most. He wasn't happy with his old job, so decided he would do it in his old man's 'honour' as it were. And found to his shock he liked it.
I DON'T think Waternoose is an old family friend of the Sullivans though- because otherwise he wouldn't have made that comment about Boo "James, is this one of yours?", because I THINK if they were very close family friends, he'd at least know if Sulley had a kid or kids (unless he assumed it was out of wedlock and one he'd just found out about her... man... then Sulley's life is a soap opera.).
Still, it would also (partially) maybe explain Sulley's feelings of closeness to Waternoose in another way. He's either a fair bit from home and his parents, perhaps further than he's ever been. Perhaps his father is even DEAD (this is speculation, but we only know his mother is still around after all)- and hey he's got a new father figure at work- THAT'S good. It's rather comforting actually.
Oh dear.

Dimensional Travel can be quite...complicated. It's easy for an accident to happen...and there are Hot Spots that make entering another dimension easier. And it's also much easier to do so in a particular way (opening a door, going into a whirlpool). I mean you really can't just "pop out of thin air" in this instance. Though how this was done....*chuckles*...it's locked away deep in the R&D department of Scare Co. The red bulb on every door (which Sullivan smashed...) allows the connection between worlds. Doing this can be rather simple if there is a high-level of energy in the ether between worlds already...so it doesn't recquire too much power to tap into it. But as said, it's a complicated process. You just don't have the energy from one world...you have it from the one your trying to get to, and the space in between.
*shrugs* Monsters Inc. alone has over 1000 or so scarers if I recall...so I don't think a judge of less-females would be right from one floor. Besides, there's men and female locker rooms heheh ^_^ ---------------------- *nods* Sullivan gets his horns from his father, and fur from his mother. I imagine his father is a rather tough and strong person...so I'm thinking he's still alive...then again...
Me and Pitbulllady actually saw a special on Sci-Fi actually with propositions of alternate worlds. Most information I knew from personal experiences, but a model showed of two horizontal "waves" if you would, think like the ocean. Now when these waves touch those of the opposite horizontal wave strip, they impact. This is an example of a connection to an alternate world. ----------------------- It's it strange that despite the many differences monsters have, more so than humans, they are technologoically more advanced? *laughs* Of course an extra hand, two more eyes, and a tail could help ^_^ But of course their biggest know-how is innovation. With so many monsters, there are so many needs. Take for instance big ole' Ted. How is a building made of steel structures is suppose to hold HIM? They probably still do have internet. Afterall...the net is a world of it's own...and I personally know they're connection *laughs*
*waves hand* No no no....a man like Waternoose, despite being a friend of the family, is rather too busy to be kept up to date on all matters outside his own work. Besides...I think he was rather surprised that Sullivan, he previously thought as still single, had a KID near him.
I can imagine Sullivan's father saying "You'll be a great scarer son...stick close to good ole' Waternoose here...I scared with him myself...he'll treat ya well".

Actually, that program on the Multiple Universe Theories wasn't on the Sci-Fi Channel, but on the Science Channel, and featured some world-renowned Astrophysicists, including Dr. Stephen Hawking, who are proponents of at least one of the many theories on Multiple Universes. It's some really compelling stuff that makes the notion of a parallel Earth populated by monsters seem not quite so far-fetched. And yes, there are places where the barrier between different worlds seems to be less substantial, and easier to cross. Sedona, New Mexico, New Grange in Ireland are just a few of these "vorteces" as they are called. Many people, even those who profess not to believe in such things, have reported strange experiences and encounters in these places. pitbulllady

Science Channel, yes...has been awhile. Of course some say the Bermuda Triangle is considered a hot spot...but the thing is...Monsters consider it a vacation spot... Of course this may be the name (same) of a similiar place in their world.

But if Waternoose WAS in anyway close to Sulley's dad- wouldn't he at least be AWARE if he had a little grandkid from Sulley himself? Wouldn't that be odd? Having a kid is not like the 'little detail' which simply might slip someone's mind even someone as busy as CEO.
Then again there ARE possible explanations for this even though we have no canon evidence that Waternoose is a family friend of the Sullivan's. It's a possibility, but it's not really canon fact is it?
But if he IS-
Maybe Sulley comes from a REALLY big family. Like huge. He might have alot of cousins if not siblings as an example. So perhaps it's hard to keep track of all those kids. They keep on having alot of them.
But considering Sulley is the only member of the family Waternoose might see on a regular basis, this still seems unlikely.
The other possible idea however is that the Sullivan's are 'old fashioned'. And Waternoose DID think Boo was Sulley's but 'out of wedlock' and perhaps the kid was on a visit and usually lives with the mother who Sulley is not with (since he WOULD know if Sulley was ever married- once again this COULDN'T simply slip his mind) so the family kept it 'on the down low' as it were. He was just perhaps trying to be 'tactful' for whatever reason and not making a big deal.
It happened in my family too actually. One of my male cousins, well he had a son and he wasn't married at the time.
And neither me nor my sister, nor our parents were told of his existence until he was one year old. Seriously. The thing is, it WAS something 'easy to hide'- since that particular cousin travelled alot (mainly to the middle east), so when we didn't see him around on visits we didn't really THINK much about it. Then the truth was finally told.
My sister and I of course didn't care a JOT that this new member of the family was technically 'illegitimate' and neither did the father's brothers at any rate, and they said they'd actually hated the fact their OWN dad had made them button their lips. We were more ticked off at the fact they decided to keep this (rather important) detail from us. My PARENTS on the other hand started to panic a bit- and they seemed to be under the impression that such things were 'contagious' and suddenly me and my SIS were going to start popping out kids without that all important ring on our fingers.
(This actually made us laugh ourselves sick actually. We told them they were being rediculous, just because we didn't see a PROBLEM with the fact they weren't married didn't mean we wanted to start making sprogs of our own. Heck, mys sister doesn't want kids at all. This started more arguments.)
So possibility is that Sulley's family is OLD FASHIONED, and Waternoose knew this, hence he might not 'be told' if Sulley had a kid outside marriage.

Given Sulley's country drawl, the "old-fashioned" family idea seems very plausible. Waternoose might not have actually meant that the kid was Sulley's biological child, either, when he asked if it was "his", but rather meant that the child was with him and brought to the factory by him. There could be something much deeper there, though; Waternoose might have realized, even then, that Boo was a human child in a costume, and meant that she was Sulley's in terms of being one of his assigned Scare kids, a statement that sort of slipped out, and then he decided to go along with it in order to avoid a panic. We know how deceptive that guy can be.
