Perhaps the monsters wanted humans to hate the reptiles too for what they tried.... Then again.....the humans would rapture the idea after The Event...

The word "serpentinus", in Latin, WAS the closest translation. PLUS, King James was notoriously afraid of both snakes and witches(he had his brother's wife tortured, imprisoned and burned at the stake as a "witch"), so it's not beyond reason that he influenced keeping the word serpent.

And if it wasn't snakes, it would've been some other poor creature, because it seems as though humans always have to have 'evil' creatures and 'good' creatures.

I dunno, what about Spiders?
I know that whenever my step-sister sees one, she tends to freak out.

I like spiders. ;D Some girls in school start screaming if they see one but I usually just scoop it up and put it outside or ignore it...

Wolves and snakes(well, reptiles in general)have probably had the worst reputations, with the most cultures, than any other animals. What's really ironic is that dogs have long been associated with loyalty and all the things humans find "nice" and "good" in animals, but dogs are nothing but mutant, domesticated(some much less so than others)wolves! Their DNA is indistinguishable, even with today's modern technology. Around where I live, believe it or not, cats are still widely feared. I have actually had another teacher, a supposedly-educated person, tell me that a black cat which I rescued from the school dumpster was "the Devil". I challenged her to find even ONE reference to cats in the Bible, not counting lions, leopards or other wild cats. She never found it of course, since it's not there.
And yeah, a lot of people are afraid of spiders, mainly because they are so different from us, I guess. I have a severely arachnophobic friend, who swears that spiders are evil because they have eight eyes, and fangs, but no face. It doesn't do me much good to argue that they DO have a face, just no neck-their head and thorax are joined. I have to admit I used to be quite afraid of spiders myself, but before I became a full-fledged phobic, I got a tarantula to cure myself. Now I have 25-went from a near-phobia to an outright addiction, so go figure! I went from someone who'd squash every spider I saw from someone who watches "CSI' with a spider large enough to eat a fairly good-sized RAT sitting on my lap! I'm almost ashamed to state how much money I've paid for tarantulas, which can be very expensive. One thing is certain-I got over my phobia!

Cats are feared, if any, because of their witchcraft history....
Everything with strange or ferious features always get the bad end....

I don't mind the bigger spiders, it's just the little ones I don't like. I try my best not to hold them, if I can. ;D Cats around where I live are very popular, and I don't really know anyone who doesn't like them. The weird thing is, most people I know seem to quite like wolves as well, though the same people don't exactly appreciate reptiles.

Personally I don't like spiders. But I have made a pact with them. They don't both me, I don't bother them. I don't kill'em though. Unless...they're those black dangerous ones....that are....20 feet tal....oh jeez....that thing ruined my second best gray suit....
