Here it is, word for word, and I've mentioned before just what a game-changer this was, which I'll go into more in a moment.
Mike: You were right. They weren't scared of me. I did everything right. I wanted it more than anybody. And I thought...I thought if I just wanted it enough, I could show everybody that...that Mike Wazowski is something special. I'm just...not. *slaps his reflection in the lake*
Sully: Look, Mike. I know how you feel.
Mike: Don't DO that! Please don't do that! You do NOT know how I feel!
Sully: Mike, calm down.
Mike: Monsters like you have everything! You don't have to be good. You can mess up over and over again, and the WHOLE WORLD LOVES YOU!
Sully: Mike.
Mike: You'll never know what it's like to fail, because you were born a SULLIVAN!
Sully: Yeah, I'm a Sullivan. I'm the Sullivan who flunked every test. The one who got kicked out of the program, the one who's so afraid of letting everyone down that I cheated! And I lied. [sigh] Mike, I'll never know how you feel. But you're not the only failure here. I act scary, Mike. But most of the time, I'm terrified.
Now think about Mike's words here, what he expresses about Sulley and his opinion of Sulley, and transpose those very words into Randall's thoughts. When I watched MU, during that scene, I didn't even hear Mike's voice. I heard Randall's voice, saying those words. Mike summed up, perfectly, exactly why Randall came to hate Sulley so much. It's because Randall kept on believing this, because unlike Mike, Randall never gets a chance to find out the truth, and Sulley never gets to find out that this is why Randall hates him. Sulley does not know that his actions in the Scare Simulator caused Randall to fall, caused Randall to mess up, so Sulley thinks he won that contest fair and square by just being the better Scarer. Even THAT, though, that competition, can be taken as a case-in-point for Mike's words out at the lake. Sulley gets a "kid" who is afraid of "lions and thunder", of all things, which is like that Scare was tailor made just for him specifically, as if someone KNEW that these were his main Scaring abilities and put that folder in the door just for him. That was no challenge at all, was it? But back to those words of Mike's, the ones that Randall still believes. Fast-forward several years, and Sulley makes it to the position of Scarer, a position presumably already held by Randall. Sulley was kicked out of college for CHEATING, and that doesn't even count the competition between him and Randall! Yet now, he's the Top Scarer. He is beating Power Ball Jackpot odds by staying at the top of the Scare Board out of thousands of JUST Scarers, and not only that, but he's been Employee of the Month for 11 months straight! He's buddy-buddy with the CEO. He stars in a commercial. Everyone loves him, no matter what...all because of his family name. Is it any wonder that Randall suspected that all that success was not honestly earned, that it was all due to WHO James P. Sullivan was, or any wonder why he'd develop so much resentment over this?
But suppose that Mike and Sulley had not had that conversation at the lake, that Mike didn't get that off his metaphorical chest, that Sulley never got to tell him about how afraid he was of letting others down, which ironically is a big fear of Randall's, too, and yet they somehow do manage to escape the Human World, before going their separate ways. NOW fast-forward again several years. Mike is working at MI, perhaps stuck in the mail room, or some other lowly position, and degree or not, someone takes notice of Sulley's Scaring ability and he tries out to become a Scarer, and succeeds. While he probably would really have to work at it, and wouldn't have anywhere near the success he had in the movie, teaming up with Mike, he's still pretty successful. He's got his good and not-so-good days, and the top of the Scare Board is occupied by different monsters at different times, as you'd expect. Sometimes it's Sulley, sometimes it's Randall, other times it's George or Javier or Rosie Levin or any of the other four thousand plus Scarers employed there, but the point is, Sulley is a Scarer, a fairly successful one. And Mike's NOT. How do you suppose that Mike would react to that, to seeing this guy, who cheated and lied, who skated through on his family name, living out MIKE'S life-long dream? Does anyone doubt that Mike's hatred and resentment would be just as intense, if not MORE so, than Randall's?
