I hope you enjoy this! I want to say that it is completely finished. I hate when I read a story...get to a good part, and then it ends. So I waited till I was done. (Trust me it was hard..lol) So here it goes!
RANDALL'S JOURNEY: A tale of cruelty, love, and one annoying woman (Abby)
RANDALL'S POV
Randall slowly was waking up. His body was aching. He looked around, he was in some type of cage. Underneath him a pool of blood was beginning to form.
He felt a sharp pain in his side. He looked over quickly to see a stick with a nail in it.
A boy poked him with the stick, "Momma he's still alive!"
Randall was gaining memory of what caused him to be passed out. Sully and Mike had thrown him the most disgusting looking door they could find.
He was beaten half to death with a shovel by some lady, who was this boys wrenched mother.
"What!?! That dumb gator! Hand me that stick you have there!" She grabbed the stick from the boys hand.
She poked him in the eye, he lunged at the stick. His head hurt badly and he let out a cry of pain.
The woman started to laugh, "Serves you right!"
She poked him a few more times, laughing every time he cried out.
"Momma, where are we taking 'em?" The boy asked.
"Well, I was thinking about cooking him. But I've never seen a purple gator.... might be bad to eat..."
"We can take him to the animal shelter... they can do..."
"They can't do anything with 'em.... we should just drop 'em off somewhere. He'll die eventually..... after a long, long, long time of suffering..." She said close to the cage.
"Put 'em in my truck. I'll toss 'em somewhere momma."
"Okay," the two carried his cage to a truck.
Randall got enough energy to bite the lady's fingers through the bars in the cage.
"Oh that dang!" She yelled dropping her side of the cage.
It fell to the ground, causing Randall to pass out.
Randall awoke to rain and wind blowing in his face. His cage was in the back of a truck that had no tailgate. As the boy drove, Randall's cage slowly slid closer and closer to the back of the truck.
The truck stopped suddenly, causing Randall's cage to fly back up in the truck.
The truck was in a parking lot.
The boy got out and dragged his cage to a door.
Randall read the sign, "Happy Paws Animal Shelter."
The boy left and drove off.
Randall laid in the rain all night long. He wasn't expecting to live.
ABBY'S POV
"As I've said before, I am happy to be in the Veterinarians Of America Association. During my stay here in Louisiana, I plan to visit local shelters and give advice on how to make their shelters a better place for humans and their best friends...."
Abby finished her speech.
People started to clap.
"Thank you Abby!" A man said.
She left the room and went into a lobby. She called her sister, Angela.
"How's it going?" She asked her sister. While she was away, her sister was talking care of her clinic in Pennsylvania.
" Oh good... I lost a few horses..."
"What?!?"
"Just kidding..." she laughed, "Everything's good."
"Okay, you scared me. Can you check and see which shelter I'm visiting first?"
"Umm... Happy Valley, and then Happy Paws."
"Okay, thanks." She hung up. Her and her sister had two different personalities, they didn't get along. She liked cats, and Angela was into dogs. Whatever it was, the two were complete opposites. Abby was a blonde, short and skinny.
Angela was an auburn brunette, tall and average. Angela was a few years older also.
She got in her car and headed to the shelter.
RANDALL'S POV
" Oh my god!" Someone yelled, waking Randall up. A tall man with a doctor outfit came over to his cage.
"What type of animal is this?" A lady asked coming behind the man.
"Let's get him inside, we don't want to lose customers because we have this 'thing' laying out here."
The way the man said 'thing' made Randall shiver. The two humans carried Randall into a room full of cages.
Dogs were everywhere, barking hysterically.
"Take it to the back."
They carried him to a different room. This room felt uncomfortable to him, something went on here that he didn't want to know.
"Is it alive?" The woman said poking him. Randall let out a growl.
"That thing is evil looking!" She yelled backing up.
"Let's give it some pain medicine, we can fix up those cuts." The man went and got a long needle out of a drawer.
Randall growled when the man held it over him. The man, however gave him the shot.
Randall felt better and drifted off into a sleep.
ABBY'S POV
She was now heading to her second stop, Happy Paws.
No one was in the lobby or in the shelter with the animals.
"Miss Dutcherson?" A man asked coming out of a room.
"Yes."
"Welcome to Happy Paws. Where animals are treated like humans! I'm Dr. Cantin"
" I see. So, where were you?"
"Back here in the back, we got an interesting animal. We may need your
expertise."
"What kind?"
"We think its a reptile, lizard."
She followed him back, she noticed a path of blood leading to the room.
A purple and blue lizard was lying on an examination table. He was at least 10 feet long, he had 8 limbs, and 3 fronds. A very interesting thing to see.
A nurse was sewing a few cuts up on his head. Whatever it was, it had suffered a lot of trauma.
"I don't think it will make it, what should I do?" The vet asked.
Abby could tell that with some work, this creature would live. Her sister was good with this type of stuff. Her sister worked with big animals. She decided to call her. She went outside in private.
"Abby what is it?" Her sister asked.
"You like lizards right?"
"Yeah."
"You should see this!"
"Well I can't. 3000 miles away, remember?"
"Well, this vet doesn't think it will live...it will, trust me."
"Okay, sooooo?"
"Should I bring it home?"
"If you feel it necessary...."
" Okay, I am. Get the biggest cage ready for me."
"How big is it?"
"About 10 feet."
"What?!? I work on the bigger animals."
"Let me handle this one."
"Okay, whatever."
They hung up.
"Miss Dutcherson?" The vet asked coming outside.
"Yeah."
"What do you want to do with the lizard?"
"Well, I plan on taking it to my clinic. My sister specializes in bigger animals,"
"Oh I see.... I'll help you load it in your car."
They got the lizard in a cage and had it loaded into her car.
Abby skipped the other shelters and headed home. Within two days and a half she would be home. Driving the entire way through was the quickest. Being on the road almost the entire year, she was used to not sleeping for long periods of time.
RANDALL'S POV
Randall woke up. He got scared at first and rammed his head off of the cage. His head hurt slightly, he let out a growl.
He was in a car.
He peaked over the backseat and saw a woman driving, he hadn't seen her before. He realized that he had started to gain some strength back. He kicked his arms and legs around in the cage.
"Calm down back there, we have 3 hours left."
He was going to reply but decided not to. He didn't want to talk to dumb humans. He glanced out a window and saw a 'Welcome To Pennsylvania' sign. He continued to try to get out of that stupid cage.
ANGELA'S POV
" Come on Charlie..." she said tugging on the leash. On the other end, a large gray Great Dane stood looking at a rabbit. As if it couldn't see him.
"Charlie! You aren't getting a rabbit today...."
Her sisters car pulled in. She put Charlie in the shelter and went out to the car.
"Don't open the door yet," her sister said getting a blow dart ready.
"What are you doing?"
"It'll try to get away, it is one crazy lizard."
"Is it in a cage or what?"
"Yeah..."
"Then it ain't getting away."
She opened the trunk door, the cage flew out and landed on the ground. A large purple and blue lizard growled at them and tried its hardest to get out of the cage.
Abby stared at Angela, "What do I do?"
"Well, first off that cage is too small."
"About getting it in the shelter."
"Well..." the animal started to go crazy, Abby shot it in the side with a blow dart. It fell over instantly.
They carried it into the shelter. They carried it downstairs to where the extra cages were kept. It was an empty basement most of the time. Abby was unlatching the cage to put it in the other when it started to wake up. She didn't notice at first.
The lizard lunged towards Abby growling.
Abby ran out of the room and shut the door.
Angela tried to open the door, Abby locked it.
The lizard looked at Angela curiously. He came towards her, his fronds were lowered. He growled and hunkered down. He circled her.
RANDALL'S POV
The girl tried to open the door again. She didn't act very afraid to his surprise. He wasn't going to attack her unless she was trying to hurt him.
She just kept in one corner.
He watched her every move as she searched around for something to open the door with. She went over to a cage and looked up at the ceiling, she did the same with a few others until she found what she was looking for. She jumped onto the side of a cage and climbed to the very top. For a human, she was pretty strong.
She moved a ceiling panel over and reached around. She pulled out a crowbar and put the panel back.
ANGELA'S POV
She had the crowbar in her hand as she jumped off of the cage. She looked over at the lizard, he cowered down in fear. He must've been beaten before, by people. She went over to the door. She wedged the crowbar near the hinges and pushed. The door opened and Abby was standing there, she had a tazer in her hand.
"Did he bite you?"
"No...."
Abby walked in towards the lizard, she had the tazer on. He growled and lunged at her. She waved the tazer close to his face.
"Abby! Don't do that!"
"He was trying to bite me!" She yelled.
The lizard lunged again, this time Abby tazed it.
"Get in the cage!" She yelled at the lizard. He looked angrier, she got close to tazing him again. This time, he did bite her. He caught the side of her arm.
"Oh that little!" Abby chased after the lizard with the tazer pointed outward.
"Abby!" Angela yelled.
"What!!"
" Maybe it wouldn't bite you if you didn't have a tazer in your hand!"
Abby was angry, "Fine I'm done with this stupid lizard!" She stormed off and threw the tazer at the ground.
RANDALL'S POV
He watched as the second girl picked up the tazer and turned it off. She then threw it in a trash can.
"I hate those things," she said.
He watched as she put the crowbar back.
"Can you go in a cage please?" She asked getting close to him.
He lowered and started to growl.
She bent down on her knees, "I'm not gonna hurt you."
He relaxed slightly, but he continued to stay lowered. He sort of liked this girl, she seemed to be smarter than the other.
She stretched her arm out towards him. He lunged at her arm, but she pulled it away.
"What was that for?" She asked slightly scared.
His stomach growled.
"Ah, you're hungry!" She said excitedly.
"Let's make a deal. You go in the cage, I'll bring you some food. Okay?"
That sounded like a good deal to him.
He cautiously walked into a cage, she locked the cage door.
"Be right back." She left.
He walked around in the cage, he was going to have to escape somehow.
The door was slid open, a large gray dog came into the room.
The girl and the 2nd girl came into the room, both carrying 2 bowls.
"I don't know what you like to eat...so here is a few different things." The second girl said. The first girl bent down to the cage, Randall growled at her.
"Angela, I'm gonna go now." The first girl walked off. So this girl was Angela.
She laid down a bowl of water first.
She had three other bowls of food. One was lettuce and vegetables, one was meat, and the last was some type of kibble. Most likely dog food.
She opened the cage and laid the bowls as close as she could to Randall. He watched her hands but didn't growl at her.
The dog came bounding over to the cage, he sniffed at Randall through the bars of the cage. Randall lunged at him causing the dog to yelp.
Angela shut the cage, "Charlie come here!"
The dog came over to her and hunkered down by her feet.
"Don't bite my dog." She pointed at Randall sternly.
She back up about 5 feet away from the cage, "Go ahead and eat."
He looked at the food, he wasn't sure if he should trust these humans. They could poison him.
"There is nothing wrong with it," she said as if she read his mind.
Randall would've felt better using forks and knives while eating, but he couldn't just ask for silverware.
He stood up on his 4 back legs, he was about the same height as her.
ANGELA'S POV
The lizard stood up on its back 4 limbs. This was shocking to her, it was only on all 8 when she saw it running around earlier.
It was a little taller than her. Maybe 2 inches. She noticed all of the cuts and scars it had on its forehead. She wanted to know what had happened to him.
He picked up the bowl of meat with his lower set of hands, he watched her out of the corner of his eye.
Unlike normal pets who dig into their food, he took each separate piece and ate it.
He took a drink by holding the bowl sideways and drinking it as if it was a cup.
"You're not a pet...."
He looked over at her.
"You're like a human almost, the way you do things."
He continued to eat.
RANDALL'S POV
This girl, Angela, was smarter than he thought.
He laid the empty bowl on the ground. Whatever the meat was, it tasted good.
She watched him as he laid back down.
He heard a door bell go off in the background.
" We have a customer, I have to go." She backed up silently and went outside of the room.
For the few seconds the door was open, he could see tons of cages full of dogs and other animals in the next room over.
"Charlie!" She yelled. The dog followed her outside of the room.
He waited in the cage for almost an hour.
The first girl came into the room, she opened another cage across from him.
"Here Angela!" She yelled.
Angela came into the room, dragging a large stick.
On the other end of the stick, a black dog went crazy. It twisted itself around and tried its hardest to bite both of the girls. The first girl tazed it, it yelped.
"Abby! Leave!" Angela yelled.
Abby left the room.
Angela got the dog in the cage and shut the door. She unlooped the stick from the dog and pulled it out. The dog went over in a corner of the cage. She went over to the door and shut it. She grabbed a bag from in the closet.
She walked over to the cage and tossed something in the cage. The dog sniffed it and ate it fastly.
She opened the cage. The dog started to growl. She threw another treat, the dog stopped growling and ate it.
Angela got on her knees and threw the treats closer and closer to herself. The dog slowly ate the treats.
"Good girl!" She said as the dog came out of the cage. It followed the trail of treats. It got the closest treat to Angela. She reached her hand out to the dog. It growled at her hand, she threw another treat.
The dog ate it quickly, not noticing that Angela was petting it. It looked at her hand curiously. She held a treat in her other hand.
The dog sniffed it, not sure what to do.
She slowly grabbed the treat out of her hand and ate it. Angela pet the dog more, scratching under its ears.
Angela had gotten the dog to like her.
The dog let her pet her.
Abby opened the door, scaring the dog. It growled at Abby and stood beside Angela, as if it was protecting her.
"I see your charmer skills have worked again."
"Yep, all animals love me." She scratched the dogs neck.
"So what did you name this one?" Abby asked.
"Well.... I think Rudy."
" Its a girl, you know that?"
"Yeah, Rudy fits her I think."
Abby raised her eyebrows and looked over at Randall's cage.
"What did you name that one?"
"He doesn't have a name yet."
"Oh I see."
Abby left the room.
The dog, Rudy, followed Angela over to its cage.
"Go!" Angela pointed into its cage. It went inside and she handed it a treat.
ANGELA'S POV
Rudy watched her intently as she shut the cage. The dog was found on the side of the road, protecting its not so lucky sister. Angela immediately felt bad for the animal. Like always, the animals liked her more than Abby. Abby was the vet too, Angela was just an assistant.
She looked over at the lizards cage. It was staring her down.
"What type of animal are you?" She asked it kneeling down by the cage.
She wasn't expecting a response....
"Im not an animal." The lizard looked at her.
"Did you just...." she could've sworn she heard it reply. She stood up in shock.
"Yes, i did." She watched its mouth move as it spoke to her.
RANDALL'S POV
Never in a million years, did Randall think he was going to talk to a human.
Angela starred at him.
"I knew it!" She yelled.
"What?" He asked, what did she know?
"That you weren't a pet! I knew you could understand me when I talked!"
He looked at her in somewhat shock. She had picked up on it. She was the smartest human he had met so far. The others treated him like an animal, which she sort of did too. But she treated him a bit better than everyone else, no tazers or blow darts.
"So where are you from?" She asked curiously.
"Monstro..." he stopped, she didn't need to know all of that. Not like she would believe him.
"Where?"
He didn't answer, he went into the corner and laid down.
"If you don't want to...."
"Angela!" Abby yelled outside of the room.
"Wait one min...."
"Angela?" Abby asked opening the door.
'What?" She asked getting annoyed with Abby.
"My phone isn't turning on, can you..."
Angela walked over to Abby and took the phone from her hand.
She looked over it quickly.
She smacked it off the wall and pressed a button on it. It lit up.
"Here." She gave the phone to Abby.
"Hmph," Abby took the phone and left.
"Some people... good lord..." Angela shook her head and went over to his cage.
"So where are you from?"
ANGELA'S POV
" You know how... kids say that there are monsters in their closets?"
"Wait here..." she ran off. She went to her office and grabbed her diary from when she was younger. She, like all others, had a monster. But no one believed her.
The one she had was a spider-like creature with eight legs. She used to draw him and even got a picture of him once. Abby however never had one.
She walked over to the cage with her poorly drawn pictures in her hand.
"This was my monster," she slid the papers under the cage. She kept the real photograph in her hand.
RANDALL'S POV
Randall looked at the drawings.
Mr. Waternoose?!?! He was Angela's monster! Although the pictures were obviously drawn by a 4 year old, he could tell that this was Mr. Waternoose.
"I know him..." he started.
"Here is a real picture I took with my old camera..."
She slid a photo under the cage. Mr. Waternoose was standing by a closet, he looked in shock. His eyes were glowing brightly.
"How long ago...."
"Well... I was 7. So, 19 years ago. After that, he never came back."
"Oh wow...."
He looked at the pictures in awe. He couldn't believe he had met one of Mr. Waternoose's old kids.
He slid the pictures back to the girl, she took them and looked at them intently.
"No one believed me, I never showed anyone this..."
He didn't say anything else to the girl. He wasn't sure if it was a good idea to say anything to her anyway.
After checking on Rudy, she left the room.
ANGELA'S POV
She shut the door behind her. The lizard would talk then he would stop. She forgot to ask his name, she started to head back.
The phone rang, Abby answered it.
Someone was bringing in their dog, it was hit by car.
After taking care of the dog, Angela had no time to ask him. She would tomorrow, when she gave him breakfast.
RANDALL'S POV
Randall woke up to bright light.
"Good morning sunshine..." He heard Angela say as she opened the curtain.
He blinked the sleep out of his eyes and yawned. He stretched out, feeling a sharp pain in his head.
He winced slightly.
He looked over at the door, it was open. He could see rows of cages, many full of dogs. Behind the cages to the left, he could see Abby sitting at a desk.
Angela was over at Rudy's cage, laying a bowl down.
She patted the dog on the head, the dog wagged its tail.
"Today, you get your shots," she said to the dog. She pet it and shut the cage. The dog happily ate its breakfast.
"So what do you want?" She asked him, coming over to the cage.
He looked up at her and lowered his fronds slightly. He still didn't like humans.
He didn't say anything.
"Eggs it is.." Angela walked out of the room.
ANGELA'S POV
Angela went to the second level of their shelter/house. She started to make eggs and bacon. Never had she cooked for one of her patients, but she didn't really mind. If he was anything like a human, he wouldn't want to eat the same thing three times a day.
She grabbed a plate and some silverware and headed down to the room he was in.
She went over to his cage, he looked at the plate with curiosity. She reached for he cage lock, he let out a low growl.
"Oh stop it," she said tapping on the cage.
She got the cage open and sat down the plate. He sniffed it and started to eat it with the silverware. He ate just like a human would.
RANDALL'S POV
He ate the eggs, and the bacon.
He was almost done eating when she asked, "What is your name?"
He looked up a her, he wasn't sure if he should tell her.
ANGELA'S POV
He mumbled something.
" What?" She asked.
"Randall..." he said with a sigh.
"Oh cool. I'm Angela... if you didn't already figure it out."
He nodded slightly and continued eating.
"So what happened? If you don't mind me asking...."
He continued to eat.
RANDALL'S POV
"Its okay you don't have to say. I could only imagine what you've gone through. Some people can be so heartless...no wonder half of our patients are so afraid of humans."
He looked over at Rudy in her cage.
"Rudy was thrown out of a car window.... her sister didn't make it. Rudy didn't want to leave, but...." she stopped. Randall knew what she was going to say.
He continued to eat, he was almost finished.
"You know, I wouldn't doubt that you don't have a concussion." She said looking over his forehead.
He lowered his fronds and winced. It hurt when he moved his fronds.
"Can I..." she stretched her arm out towards him. He growled and lowered his fronds. He winced again.
"Look, either you let me look or I'll get Abby to get her blow darts." She said half jokingly.
He thought about it momentarily, he had nothing to lose. Humans weren't toxic. He relaxed slightly and Angela got completely in the large cage.
He crossed his first and second set of arms, he sighed.
ANGELA'S POV
She laughed and looked over his forehead. She lightly brushed her fingers over the largest cut. He somewhat shivered at her touch. There was a large bruise by his first frond. She barely tapped it and he jerked.
"I can see why you wince when you move your fronds. I don't think I've ever seen a bruise this big."
He somewhat relaxed and she continued to search over his forehead.
RANDALL'S POV
He waited until she was all done with his forehead examination.
" The one might be infected, let me grab some cream." Angela ran off towards the office where Abby was.
She came back with a cream and a bandage roll.
She put some cream on a cut near his second frond. She carefully put the bandage over it. It started to tingle, but it felt better.
"That should do the...." she started.
A phone ring cut her off.
"Hello?" He heard Abby start.
Angela kept silent, he could tell that she was paying deep attention.
"Angela! We have an emergency!" Abby yelled coming towards the room.
Angela got out of his cage and locked it.
ANGELA'S POV
"What happened?!?" Angela asked worried.
"A girl was attacked by a pack of dogs."
She grabbed her pole and ran to their car.
Abby drove them to a large building. A man was having illegal dog fights. A girl who was curious went into the building and opened a few of the cages. She didn't die, but suffered many bites and broken bones.
Angela and Abby had to get all of the dogs out. They would take them to the shelter and euthanize the ones who weren't adoptable. Angela hated that part the most. She loved animals, even the mean ones. They weren't in charge of what they turned into, the man in charge was to blame.
RANDALL'S POV
Randall laid down in his cage. Across the room, Rudy whined and whined.
"Shh!" He hissed.
Rudy started to bark.
"Rudy! Shh!" He said again.
She became quiet for a while. He heard cars on gravel, many cars. Angela and Abby were finally back.
He heard several doors shut, the dogs in the other room started to bark frantically. Maybe Angela could move him somewhere more peaceful.
He heard the door unlock. He could see shadows in the room with all the dogs. People by people were coming into the room with large carts. On each cart was 3 or so cages. Each person stopped to look at Randall.
Angela got Rudy out of her cage and took her into the other room. He saw her put Rudy in a cage with other dogs.
All I all, there were about 50 cages in the room.
Angela thanked the people who brought in the carts. They left and only Angela and Abby were left.
"We have to get him out of here..." Abby said pointing to Randall.
"I'll do that, you get the... things..."
Abby left the room.
Angela went over to his cage with one of the poles.
"Now let's get this over with." She stuck the pole in his cage.
He growled.
"Don't worry," she said smiling.
He calmed down and allowed her to put the loop over his head. She pressed a button and it got tighter. He squirmed a bit, but got relaxed.
Angela opened the cage and walked him over to the other room. He passed cages and cages of dogs. She took him to a cage similar to the one in the other room. He went inside and she took the loop off of his head.
"Wish me luck...." she said as she left to the other room.
ANGELA'S POV
After a few hours of sadness, 15 dogs remained adoptable. Angela was bitten several times, and she had a bandage around her arm.
She put the last of the dogs in their cages after giving them each shots and names. She got Rudy and put her back in the room.
She was going to get Randall.
She went over to his cage, he was curled up in a ball. He looked uncomfortable, he was most likely used to sleeping on a bed.
Maybe if she used two cages and Abby's old cot....she could make him more comfortable. At least until they found a real place for him to stay.
She went to the other room, where Abby was cleaning up the floor.
"Abby, where is that old cot?" She asked.
"In the shed...why?"
"Well that lizard, Randall, doesn't look comfortable on the ground and the dog beds are too small.."
Abby gave her a strange look.
"Can you help me put two cages together too?"
Abby rolled her eyes but she helped her sister put two cages together.
Angela carried in the cot and set it up in the new larger cage.
She brought the sleepy Randall back to his original location. He was so tired he didn't even notice the new 'bed' that he got. He laid on it and went right back to his deep sleep.
Tomorrow was Sunday, the only day the shelter was closed.
RANDALL'S POV
Randall woke up to Rudy barking.
"Uggh." He groaned. He opened his eyes and looked over at the cage. He realized that he was on a bed or something. His cage was bigger too.
Last night for some reason he slept really good. He probably didn't even notice the bed and cage difference.
Rudy stopped barking when the door creaked open.
Angela peaked in, "Rudy, what's wrong?" She asked the dog. The dog barked several more times, and she scratched at the cage.
Angela walked in.
"Wanna go for a walk?" She asked. Rudy wagged her tail frantically.
"Randall?"
Randall jerked up, unused to hearing his name called by a human.
"Do you want to go outside?" She asked getting in a container. She pulled out a leash.
He shrugged, "Okay..."
Maybe he could escape somehow.
"You have to use a leash too, a stronger, less biteable one." She pulled out a long chain-like leash.
She got Rudy out of her cage and hooked her up to the leash.
She went over to Randall's cage.
"Like the bed?" She asked unlatching the cage. He nodded in reply.
She brought the collar over to Randall, he growled slightly. Although he trusted Angela more, he still felt weary.
"Its okay," she said kneeling down.
He stopped growling, but kept his fronds low. She reached out for him, he backed up slightly.
"You let me touch your forehead yesterday... what's a matter?" She said, slightly confused.
She was talking soflty to him, which made him calm. He slowly got relaxed.
"Can I?" She held out the collar.
He didn't say anything, just watched her closely. Humans were so different than monsters...
She slipped the collar over his head carefully. She turned it around, and she latched the leash to it.
He noticed the bandage on her arm.
"What happened?" He asked, trying to hide the worry in his voice.
"Dogs." She said casually. She allowed him out of the cage first.
Rudy sniffed him, he growled at her in warning.
If any monsters saw him in this leash and collar, he would feel like such a dork.
Although it looked like he didn't care, he truly did. He had heard so many comments about himself...until he got tougher. No one would dare bother with him...but he had no friends. Weaker with friends or tougher without any.
Tougher, at least no one bothered with him....
ANGELA'S POV
Randall walked to the door.
She opened it up and the dogs started to bark hysterically.
Randall looked skiddish as he silently followed her past the cages.
She lead Randall and Rudy up several stairs to the main lobby. She took them past the birds and rabbits to the back door.
RANDALL'S POV
Randall was watching Angela's hand as she approached the door. She took the ends of the leashes and hooked them to what looked like separate leashes. Whatever they were, they went to the other side of the door.
He planned on running as far as he could as soon as the door opened. He was going to turn invisible, if he could, and run.
The door opened. He ran.
To his surprise Angela let go. Rudy ran along side of him... did she set them free?
For some reason he stopped and turned around. Rudy kept running.
Angela smiled and crossed her arms out of proudness.
"You did it," she said smiling.
He slowly got closer to where she was, he noticed that his leash was attached to a large wire. He wouldn't have been able to go anyway.
"You did it!"
"What?" He asked quietly.
" You didn't run away! I knew you would turn around!" She looked excited.
He was puzzled.
"It was a test, to see if you would run or not. You passed," she said.
"Where does it go?" He asked pointing to the wire.
"The run? A 1/2 mile, it stops at the edge of the farm."
He nodded in agreement.
"You can walk along it if you want... I'm gonna get Blue and catch up to Rudy."
He didn't know who Blue was, but he nodded. He started to walk along 'the run.'
ANGELA'S POV
She watched as Randall started to walk along the run. He looked so lonely.
She headed off to the barn to get Blue, her painted horse. He was at the shelter for a year and a half and no one adopted him. So she took him in.
She got her saddle and hooked it up to Blue. Blue was a retired race horse. His racing name was Ol' Buckering Blue, she just called him Blue. He won several first prizes in his day.
She got up on the saddle. Blue was ready to run.
She walked him over to where Rudy's run began. In the distance, she saw Randall walking along his run.
She kicked her shoes, Blue went up on two legs and neighed.
"Yah!" She yelled.
Blue went into full run, galloping as fast as he could.
He neighed several times, they were quickly gaining on Randall.
RANDALL'S POV
Randall heard a weird noise coming from behind him. He turned around and saw a large animal charging at him.
He turned invisible.
The animal, who he now realized had Angela on its back, stopped instantly. It made the same noise and stomped loudly.
Angela was looking towards Randall.
She was moving her head around, she looked panicked.
He realized that she couldn't see him, he quickly turned back.
She widened her eyes, "Invisibility too!?!" She somewhat said in a breath.
He nodded. He changed a few different patterns, including the cage pattern.
"That is so cool!" She said happily.
The animal made a noise again, Randall growled.
"This is my horse, Blue." She patted the horse. The 'horse' shook its head at the sound of its name.
The horse tapped its feet on the ground, it had metal shoes on.
"Yah!" Angela yelled.
The horse went up on two legs and made a loud noise. It went down and ran towards where Rudy went. It jumped over rocks and stumps like nobody's buisness. On top, Angela bobbed up and down. Surprisingly, they were going fast.
They ran out of Randall's line of vision. He walked faster.
ANGELA'S POV
Ahead, Angela could see Rudy. Rudy wasn't running anymore, just fast walking. She got close to Rudy, she was afraid of Blue.
Angela jumped off and grabbed Rudy's leash. She unhooked it from the run.
She got back up on Blue. Rudy ran alongside Blue as they went back to the shelter.
They passed Randall.
In front of them, they could see Abby hooking up another dog to the run. Angela took Blue to his stall and took Rudy to her cage.
She went outside and met with Abby.
"You let the lizard out?" Abby asked.
"Yeah?"
"You trust that thing?"
"He's not a 'thing'. And yes I do trust him. He passed the test, Rudy didn't."
Abby snickered, "You know I was wondering..."
"What?"
"Who would adopt that?"
"For the last time.... he isn't a 'thing' or 'that."
"Then what is he?"
"He is a lizard from..." she stopped and gave up. Abby wasn't paying attention anyway.
"Exactly... you don't even know." Abby started to laugh.
Angela rolled her eyes and headed in the direction of Randall. Her sister got her nerves.
RANDALL'S POV
Randall continued on the path of the run. He wondered if there was any closets that were active around here. If Angela would take him to one, he could get out of the human world.
Why did it matter if Angela took him?
He looked up at the run that his leash was hooked onto. It was at least 10 feet up. His leash was metal and it was probably metal with a plastic covering. He grabbed his leash and jiggled it. It was securely attached to the run. He probably couldn't get it to brake. He went as far as he could to the left. He pulled hard, but the collar was uncomfortable around his neck. If he didn't have such a wide mouth, it would probably slip off.
He heard barking and turned invisible abruptly. A large dog ran along a different run. It was two away from him. The dog ran joyfully with its tounge hanging out of its mouth.
A small animal, like the the 'rabbits' in the shelter ran near the dog. The dog ran towards it, flying backwards when the run stopped. The dog shook its head and got itself out of the collar. It took off for the rabbit and Randall heard a loud shriek. The dog, with its prize, came close to where he got out of the collar and sat. He pounced on the dead animal.
Randall heard running.
Angela came around a patch of bushes.
"Lusifer!" She yelled shaking her finger at the dog.
The dog picked up the rabbit and went over to Angela. It wagged its tail in a guilty way.
She got on her knees and patted the dog. She put the dog back in its collar and threw the rabbit in the bushes.
She looked over at Randall's run and got to where his leash was.
"Invisible again?" She asked brushing the pebbles off of her pants.
He turned back to his original color.
"So you can do that whenever you want?" She said walking with the dog.
"Yeah..."
"That's cool, Abby wouldn't like that." She laughed.
He started to walk in the same direction.
"Should I tell Abby that you can talk?" Angela asked coming towards Randall.
He wasn't sure.
"She might be a little nicer to you... right now your just a 'thing' to her."
"Maybe..."
"How do I tell her... she can't believe half the stuff I say now ."
He didn't say anything. He walked along the run towards the shelter.
ANGELA'S POV
They got to the shelter, and Abby was waiting for Lusifer. Randall slightly looked at Angela. He went around Abby, he really didn't like Abby.
"Abby I have to tell you something."
Randall looked over at Angela.
RANDALL'S POV
" What is it Angela!" Abby yelled, mad at the interruption.
"You know how you wondered what he is?"
"Yeah, that 'thing'?" She asked pointing and angry finger at Randall.
"He's not a 'thing'!"
Abby started to laugh. "Its not like that 'stupid thing' can..."
Randall started to growl.
"I'd be careful what you say in front of him."
Abby looked over at Randall, he growled.
She gulped, "He can't understand me..."
Angela nodded, she crossed her arms in a pleased manner.
"Not just understand." Angela said with a grin on her face.
"What else then?" Abby asked crossing her arms.
"I can talk..." Randall said.
Abby screamed and hid behind Angela.
Randall chuckled.
"He can turn invisible too." Angela said starring at her cowering sister.
Abby had a look of disbelief on her face. Randall showed her, she continued to hide behind Angela.
"Abby can you stop..." Angela said stepping behind her sister.
"Why did you try to bite us?" Abby asked crossing her arms. She looked right at Randall.
It was because of what he went through. At the time, he thought all humans carried around shovels. He didn't trust them. He wasn't sure how to say it without sounding like a wuss.
He looked over at Angela. She had the same curious look on her face. He started to growl.
"I'm sure he has a very good reason," Angela said.
Randall shot Angela a 'thank you' look. She nodded slightly.
"What is this?" Abby asked pointing both of her fingers between Angela and Randall.
"What do you mean?" Randall asked.
"You two.... you like her more than me."
Angela let out a laugh, she turned it into a cough.
"Shut it you freak!" She yelled at Angela.
Randall started to growl. Abby started to laugh, "This is hilarious!"
"Okay Abby, what's your point?" Angela asked.
"He likes you more than me."
"What?"
"At least I'm not fake!"
"What? I'm not fake..." Angela said trailing off.
"You went from the biggest freak-nerd in the world to this..." Abby waved her arms around, "Tough chic, who acts mean to everyone but still manages to get every animal to like you!"
ANGELA'S POV
Although what Abby said was true, Angela felt like attacking her sister.
"Animals! Not people! Everyone hates me! Everyone loves you! So, big freaking deal if animals like me more. I'd take people friends over animal friends..."
"But that's not it. You used to make friends! When you were a nerd! Why'd you change?!?"
RANDALL'S POV
This was a lot to take in...
Randall was the same way. Back in college, when he was Randy, he was nerdy, gullible, and very nervous. But he made friends quickly.
"Why did you change!?!" Abby asked Angela.
Angela was breathing heavily, she wasn't sure what to say.
"Why did you?!?" Abby yelled.
Randall couldn't take it.
"I had to! I..I..I.. was so misunderstood. Everyone took control over my generosity! When I changed I became....respected. No one makes fun of me anymore! I want to change, but no one understands how hard it is!" Randall blurted.
Abby looked at him in shock.
He looked at Angela, she had her hands over her mouth. Her eyes were getting watery.
He gathered all of his strength and lunged at his leash. He whipped his mouth around and broke the metal. He turned invisible and fled the scene.
ANGELA'S POV
Angela watched as the now empty leash dangled in mid air. She looked over at Abby, "I hope you're happy. He couldn't have put it any better."
Angela kicked a bucket and went over to Blue's stall.
She grabbed a stool and sat down by Blue.
"How can we get him back?" Abby asked walking in.
"He may come back...but he can turn invisible, so its pretty impossible that we can just find him."
"Let's take the horses and look for him, its worth a shot." Abby said getting a saddle.
"I think that you've done enough. I'll take Blue out, you stay here and keep an eye out. He might try to come back." Angela took the saddle from Abby and hooked it up to Blue.
Abby nodded, " I feel so bad."
"You should."
Angela left on Blue.
RANDALL'S POV
Randall climbed up a tree. He could see the run from where he was.
He changed back to his original color. His teeth were hurting, the metal hurt.
He still couldn't believe that he said that. He couldn't believe the fact that Angela was just like him, either. No wonder he liked her so much, they were so much alike.
He wasn't the type to blurt out like that. But after saying it, he did feel better. He took a few moments to dwell on the time when he was a nerd.
He remembered wearing big purple glasses and having an invisibility problem.
He remembered when him and Mike were 'best chums.' He even remembered baking cupcakes for Mike. After he got into ROR, Johnny had taught him to put his feelings and friends last.
He turned into someone...someone no one wanted to mess with. Someone who no one made fun of...someone who was respected and treated fairly. But he was also someone who was always lonely, had no friends, and was considered of having the worst personality. But for some reason, he had liked the new person that he became. This person would be considered 'cool' in the minds of the nerds.
At some points, it felt good not having to worry about helping everyone. But now that he was thinking about it, he realized that 'Randy' would have hated 'Randall.'
He missed going to parties and having friends. He considered Fungus as a somewhat friend, but he treated him so badly.
He heard the horse noise. He turned invisible. He saw Angela on Blue go to where Randall could see the run.
"Randall!" She yelled. She patted the horse and they slowly followed the runs.
"Randall!" She yelled looking around.
He wasn't sure if he should go back with her or runaway. She was the closet thing to a friend he had had in a while.
He got out of the tree and went over to where they were, still invisible.
ANGELA'S POV
She looked around and yelled his name a few times.
Something spooked Blue and he bucked up. Angela grabbed for the reins but missed. She started to fall, but something caught her. It leaned her to her feet and she grabbed for Blue. She turned around, nothing was there. She looked around more, nothing was where she almost fell.
"Randall?" She asked.
RANDALL'S POV
Randall walked over to the front of the horse. She was looking around for him, he had caught her from falling off the horse.
He wasn't sure what to do, something was telling him to go with her. Something deep down inside of him liked her more than he thought.
She got back up on her horse.
"Randall!" She yelled.
That thing inside of him was pushing too hard, he turned visible.
"Randall?" She said getting off the horse. He looked at her and grinned slightly as if saying 'Yep, I'm back.'
She got close to him, but not too close. She knew that he was still weary with people. He would probably get over that.
"Let's get that thing off your neck." She said reaching for his collar.
He was hesitant at first but let her take it off.
"Why did you do that?" She asked taking the collar off.
"I don't know..." he replied, not really sure what she wanted him to say.
"Well let's just say, you couldn't have put it any better. I didn't know that you, let alone anyone really, were like me."
He didn't say anything.
"You know sometimes I feel like that old Angela wants to come back out. You know? I don't feel like I've changed, I think I just covered up the old me. It's still there, just I don't let it out."
"Exactly," he said. "Like Rand...I.... used to be so nice that people took me for granted and I think I still..." he stopped.
ANGELA'S POV
Angela waited for Randall to finish, but he didn't.
They were heading back to the shelter. She had Blue following beside her on a leash.
Randall kept his head down, as if he was ashamed of the old him.
"I used to be shakey. Like really nervous," she started, "I used to bounce my leg all the time and play with my hair."
"I used to play with my fingers and bite my lip," he said.
"Mm-hm. I had like no finger nails," she laughed.
They were close to the shelter when Abby came outside.
"Invisible leash?" Abby asked.
"No." Angela replied.
"Are you going to put one on him?" Abby asked.
"No, we are going to treat him like the being he is."
"So no cage?" Randall asked joining the conversation.
" Nope." Angela replied.
"Where is he going to sleep?" Abby asked.
"In the attic with the cot, or in the living room on the couch."
"I'd prefer the cot." Randall said lifting his hand as if they were voting.
"The attic it is." Angela said.
Angela lead Randall to the shelter. They went to where Randall used to sleep. She folded the cot up.
She lifted it up and dragged it out of the cage.
"Need help?" He asked.
"Nah, this thing doesn't weight much. Thanks though," she said smiling. They went through the door and headed to the lobby.
"Where is the.."
"Janitors closet. We didn't want people sneaking up to the house all the time."
He fiddled with the door knob.
"Its locked." He turned around and looked at her.
She walked over to the door and put her back pocket up against it. The sensor beeped and the door unlocked. She had her card in her pocket, the sensor picked up on the microchip inside of it. Randall held the door open while she carried the cot.
RANDALL'S POV
Angela carried the cot up the stairs. He wished that she would've just let him carry it. She went around a somewhat turn and went up several more stairs. She sat the cot down and shook her fingers.
"I'll take it from here," he said picking up the cot.
She rolled her eyes, "If you must."
He carried it to the top of the stairs.
He got to the top and Angela's dog, Charlie, barked at him.
"Charlie, shush." Angela petted the dog.
He looked around at what must have been the living room. A blue couch and loveseat faced a large TV. A coffee table was in between, covered in magazines and a few coffee cups.
"Follow me," Angela said leading him to yet another staircase.
She went to the top and opened the door for him. He carried the cot in and sat it in the middle of the room. The room was fairly large. It was painted a light green color. An old computer desk and several boxes and chests were in the room. A small window faced the stall and the large farm.
"Well, this is your room for now I guess," she said looking around.
She pushed the computer desk over, close to an outlet.
"What are you doing?" He asked.
"You need a nightstand.."she said. She went over to one of the boxes and pulled out an old lamp. It was black and grey. She plugged it in and turned it on.
"Huh. I can't believe the light bulb lasted so long.. " she said turning it off. The light in the window was enough to light up the entire room.
"Where do you want your bed?" She asked.
"Ummm." He put his second set of hands on his hip.
He went over to the cot and set it up to its normal sleeping setting. He slid it over to the left of the 'nightstand'.
"That works," Angela said heading downstairs, "Now, who's hungry?"
He followed her downstairs.
He followed her to the kitchen, where Abby was sitting at a stool. Her back was facing them.
"Angela what's for breakfast?" She asked, not knowing Randall was there.
"Did you feed the cats?" Angela asked getting in a drawer.
"We feed them after we eat," Abby said noticing Randall.
"Yeah on work days when we eat at 8, which was two hours ago. So the cats need fed."
"Uggh..." Abby said getting off the stool. She went down the staircase.
"Do you care if I put a little sleepy time medicine in her eggs?" Angela asked Randall jokingly.
"Be my guest." He sat down at the stool.
Angela got into the fridge and pulled out a cartoon of eggs. The light in the fridge gave him a though, where do they get their power from?
"Where do humans get their energy from?" He asked.
"Like electricity? Well, depending where you are. Most people get their power from fossils in the ground. But we get our power from those," she pointed out the window. In the distance, large fans were on a hill. They were spinning.
"What do they do?" He asked, quite curious.
"They collect wind. Inside the generators take the wind and turn it into electricity."
He knodded.
"Where do monsters get their electricity from?" She asked cracking eggs in a skillet.
"Well... from human children screams." He wasn't sure how she would take it.
"That's a little demented," she said putting the carton in the fridge.
"Yeah, and I was a scarer..."
"Oh really? Like the spider guy?"
"Yep, and its Mr. Waternoose."
"Ohh... so somewhere a little kid has nightmares about you?"
"More than one."
"Eww," she replied, "So your considered the 'bad guy'?"
"Well in your world, not mine. There are thousands of scarers. Many monsters look up to scarers." He said getting a little on the defending side.
She looked over at him.
"That's not what I meant! I bet a lot of monsters want to be scarers. I was just saying in the human world, children would consider you a bad guy. But I don't consider you a bad guy, your rather nice actually."
ANGELA'S POV
Randall crossed his arms, probably unsure what to think.
"Hey." She walked over to him, "I didn't mean it like that! You know that I like you! Who cares what those kids think."
He relaxed a little.
"Don't take what I say to heart," she laughed.
RANDALL'S POV
Randall laughed slightly. He did take things the wrong way sometimes. He was just used to monsters not enjoying his job and he took what she said the wrong way. He was quick on jumping to solutions.
"I'm sorry," she said. This threw him off, "Not many people like the people who have to put animals to sleep, but.."
"Sleep?"
"Ohh. Umm, 'Sleep' is a nicer way of saying death. But! We only put animals to sleep that are sick, in pain, suffering, or unadoptable. We never put animals to sleep that don't get adopted though, its the ones that attack and hurt people. So I'd rather scare people then kill animals I guess."
She thought scaring kids for electricity was bad.
"How do you kill these animals?"
"Euthanasia. Or shots. It is the most humane and painless way to kill something. Worst part of the job."
"Do you kill alot of animals?" He asked.
"Not alot, but it does happen. Like that one time with the dog fights. We euthanized almost 30 beautiful dogs. But they were so sick and mean that they would be better off put to sleep. It was sick."
"What was the worst?" He asked.
"Um. We went to a greyhound racing kennel. The one dog who was 'retired' by a 22 was in a back room. It was paralyzed but lived without food or water for almost 36 hours. The dogs naturally are skinny, but not her. She was so sick, and weak... When we went in with the shot, she wagged her little tail. So happy to see people. It was pitiful, but she couldn't suffer anymore. The shots are good for things like that."
"Oh, humans are cruel."
" Not all humans, am I cruel?"
"No, your the normal one."
She smiled, "Charlie was a fighting dog."
"Really?"
"Yep, he was almost euthanized by a different doctor whos name I won't mention. I gave him another chance, and he turned out great."
She continued cooking.
Randall was still curious about the 'putting to sleep'.
"Do you kill bigger animals too, like horses?"
"Its not killing, its 'putting to sleep.' And I think for the sake of our appetites, we should stop talking about our somewhat demented jobs. And that's a yes." She flipped the eggs.
"That's a good idea," Randall said, "Do you want me to get drinks?"
"Um, sure. Do you know how to make coffee?"
"Uh duh. Do you know how to kill animals?"
"Randall..." Angela said jokingly. "I prefer black coffee and Abby likes orange juice. You like coffee too?"
"Oh yes. I almost died without it the past few days," Randall said pouring coffee beans in the filter. It smelled so good.
"You should've said something, I would've made it for you."
" Exactly, you've done enough for me."
Angela made a noise of disgust.
ANGELA'S POV
Angela flipped the last egg onto a plate. It broke and the 'dip' started to pour out. It was now officially Abby's.
Randall had sat the drinks out on the table.
"Where's the bathroom?" He asked trying to ask as casual as possible.
"Around the corner to the left." She pointed to the hallway that lead to the attic staircase.
"Okay."
He left and she sat out the plates.
"All done," Abby sat shaking her hands as she entered the dining room.
" Where did he go?" She asked starting to sit down.
"He's right there! Invisible!" Angela yelled pointing to the chair Abby was starting to sit on.
She screamed and tried to move, she landed on the floor.
Angela started to laugh.
"What did I miss?" Randall asked looking at Abby on the floor.
"Well, Abby here was..."
"Nothing!" Abby interrupted and sat down.
"Angela you broke my egg."
"Shun me. At least I didn't burn the kitchen down cooking cupcakes."
Abby rolled her eyes. Angela laughed.
"Long story," she said to Randall as she took a sip of coffee.
"That's really good!" She said surprised. Coffee was always good but this was really good.
"Secret ingredient," Randall said taking a seat.
"Oh I see," Angela said.
They ate their eggs.
Angela took the plates and rinsed them off in the sink, she then set them in the dishwasher.
"So any in the paper?" She asked Abby. A different shelter, that usually euthanized dogs over 7 if they weren't adopted in 3 days, had a section in the newspaper that showed all of the dogs in their shelter.
"One, his name isToby." Abby held up the newspaper.
In the 'senior section' a small brown Collie mixed dog was depicted in the newspaper.
Angela read the description aloud as Randall finished his coffee.
"Toby is a 8 year old Collie/Beagle mix who came into the shelter as a stray. He is a very sweet boy and enjoys going for walks. Since Toby is over 7, his adoption period is limited. Toby is looking for a place to call home... Awe, he's so cute," Angela added.
"Here," Abby said handing Angela the house phone.
Angela called the shelter and scheduled a 'meet and greet' with Toby at noon.
"So you are adopting a dog?" Randall asked.
"No, we are giving him another chance. Any animal over 7 is put to sleep within 3 days if no one adopts him. Today is his third day."
"Oh wow. Does your shelter have a policy like that?" Randall asked half worried, "Cause I'm definitely over 7 and I've been here a few days."
" No, dork! We keep all animals, except.."
"The sick ones, the suffering ones, or the ones that are too mean to be adoptable," Abby said mocking Angela.
Randall let out a sigh of relief.
"We are almost out of cat food by the way," Abby said.
RANDALL'S POV
" You coming along?" Angela asked Randall as she picked up her keys.
It was eleven. She was going to the store to grab cat food, then to go see Toby.
"Won't people like notice me?" He said looking down at himself.
"Invisibility."
"Oh yeah... I'll come." He followed her down the stairs.
They were getting ready to leave when Angela remembered something.
"I forgot to move Rudy to the other room."
Angela went to the room where Rudy was, where Randall used to be.
Rudy was happy to see them.
Angela hooked her up to a leash and took her to another room. This was full of cages, dogs were everywhere.
"This is the dog room," Angela said to Randall.
She went over to a room with office desks and grabbed a piece of laminated paper.
She took Rudy over to a cage that was empty.
She lead Rudy inside, "Here ya go." Angela unhooked her leash.
She hooked the piece of paper to a hook on the cage.
It had a picture of Rudy on it.
Randall read over it while Angela filled the food and water bowls.
Rudy was 8 months old, and was a pure bred 'Lab.'
"She goes up for adoption tomorrow." Angela patted Rudy, "Let's go."
He followed her back to the lobby.
"Do you have a car?" He asked, he didn't have one in Monstropolis. That got him thinking, when was he going back?
"Yep, several."
"Do you know any ways to get me back into my world?" He asked.
"Well you can go in through a door that another monster is scaring through right?" She sounded a bit unsure of the fact of him possibly leaving.
"Yeah."
ANGELA'S POV
She lead him to her car. It was a maroon Jeep Grand Cherokee.
She got in the drivers side and waited for Randall to get in the passengers.
He got in and looked rather comfortable on the seat. She was expecting him to look uncomfortable and squished.
"So we just need to take you to a kids' room with an active door," she said starting the car.
"Mm-hm, exactly."
He looked rather curious as he watched the backing up screen. There was a camera on the trunk, so she could watch and make sure no one was behind her.
She put it into drive and the camera shut off.
"When do you plan on leaving?"
"Whenever its possible."
"Well my niece is having a 5th birthday party a month from now. I don't know if she has a monster though.."
"Most likely.."
"How did you get in here anyway? Like did you accidentally shut the door or.."
"I was banished.."
"Are you allowed back? What did you do?"
"Well I was banished illegally. And I did some pretty bad things... you probably don't want to hear."
"Tell me, I don't think anything will bother me." She smiled.
RANDALL'S POV
Randall didn't know how to tell her. He didn't want to talk to humans to begin with, but something about her just made him pour his heart out to her.
"Well, I 'kidnapped' a human kid to begin with."
She didn't say anything, just continued driving down the road.
He told her about the Scream Extractor and what he planned on using 'Boo' for.
He was starting to explain how Sully went to take 'Boo' back but Randall wanted to show Mr. Waternoose his machine when Angela said, "We are getting into the city now, you might wanna turn invisible. You can continue your story."
He turned invisible and kept telling her.
"...and they threw me in the worst door that they could find." He finished.
"Wow, and you ended up in Louisiana."
"Yep, then Abby found me."
"So, if you don't mind me asking, what did those people do? They obviously whacked you with something."
He wasn't sure what to say.
"A shovel." He didn't want to think about it. He turned and watched out the window. No one could see him but it was interesting watching humans in their cars.
"I'm sorry you went through that."
"I deserved it."
"No you didn't, no one does."
He looked over at her, she couldn't see him but he smiled at her.
"Why did you build the machine? Did Mr. Waternoose make you?"
"Well. It is quite embarrassing."
" Oh if you don't wanna say.."
"No, just don't laugh."
"Why would I?"
"Well, after going through all this... I figured out it was all pretty much my dumb fault. See, when I was 5, my father passed away. My mom wasn't the best and we ended up living with my grandmother... well I went to college on loans and then I was nerdy, nervous, and socially awkward. That's about when I changed into the person I am now. When I got into Monsters Incorporated, Mr. Waternoose was like a father to me. He was somewhat the same to Sully, but I felt like he liked me more. Once Sully was number one scarer, I was considered second best in Mr. Waternoose's mind. He told me that he would be very proud of me if made the machine. So I made the machine and ended up here. I'm considered the 'bad guy' in more than just in the minds of the kids I scare."
"So he used you? What an.."
"I fell for it though.."
"No duh, for recognition and acceptance I would have fell for it to. Its not fair he used your fathers death to trick you like that."
It wasn't fair, and Randall knew that. He just blamed himself, like everyone else did. His mom considered Randall a failure and all he wanted to do was be considered a good guy, but look at him now. He kidnapped children, was tricked into making an awful machine, and illegally banished into the human world.
He was a big failure, just like his mom said he was.
He was silent as they pulled into a parking lot. A large store called 'Walmart' had people coming and going in every direction.
"Sunday, worst day to come. But the only day off." Angela parked the car and got out. Randall got out and followed behind her.
ANGELA'S POV
Angela lead Randall to the 'enter' door. She grabbed a cart and headed straight to the pet section.
"You around here?" She asked once no one was near.
"Yep, all good. Boy, this store is huge."
"Mm-hm."
She pushed the cart down the pet food isle.
"Purina, Purina." She read over the labels. "Ah, here we go."
She pushed the cart to the stack of 50 pound cat food bags.
"How many are you getting?"
"4."
A bag lifted up and laid down in the cart.
She picked up another bag and did the same.
He got one more bag and so did she. Randall started to push the cart, so she lead them down the treat isle.
She bent over to get dog bones when the cart rammed into her.
"Really?" She asked Randall looking where he should have been. A woman with two kids walked down the isle.
She started to push the cart.
"One of my kids." She heard Randall say. She turned to where the voice was.
"That's ironic."
She turned to look at the kids. A boy, about 7, was walking along the cart. A young baby was in the cart seat.
She walked to the checkout, a boy she knew from school was at the checkout.
"Hey Angela," he said ringing up the bags.
"Hi."
"So how you doing?"
"Okay, you?"
"Pretty good. Me and Tina are engaged."
" That's great."
"Mm-hm. Your total is $124.36."
She swiped her card and left the checkout.
They put the bags in the backseat and headed to the shelter where Toby was.
RANDALL'S POV
Randall watched out the window as Angela pushed the cart into the cart return. In the sunlight, her hair was a bright red color.
Her eyes were bright green, what was he thinking? She was a human.
She got into the driver side and started the engine.
"That's weird how you saw one of your kids." She looked over towards him.
He was looking at her eyes...
"Randall? You there?" She asked reaching her hand out.
"Yeah.. uh.. sorry.. I was watching those people."
"Oh okay. Well, we are gonna have a little spare time till we go in go meet Toby," she said reading the time on her cell phone.
"What's that called?"
"My phone? Its a smart phone, the iPhone."
"Oh okay."
"Watch this." She pulled up the middle compartment and plugged her phone into what he thought was a charger.
On the screen it said 'reading USB.'
She shut the middle compartment and pressed play on the screen.
A song came on, "It can play the songs on my iPhone."
"Oh, can I see your phone?" He asked. The 'iPhone' sounded pretty cool.
"Um, sure." She got the phone out of the compartment and handed it to him.
"I have a few apps on there."
She backed out of the parking lot and got onto the highway.
He clicked on the one 'app.' A screen popped up and music started to play. He found the sound button and turned it down. He played the app a little and checked out a few others.
"There's the shelter." Angela pointed to the little building coming up to the left.
He turned off the iPhone and handed it to her.
"Its so weird seeing a floating phone," she said laughing.
He turned back and then invisible again.
She pulled into the parking lot and got out of the car.
He made sure no one was looking and opened his door.
She lead him to the front door, where she casually held the door open a few extra seconds.
"Are you here for Toby?" A woman asked coming out of nowhere.
"Yes I am."
"Well I'm Tara."
"I'm Angela... Angela Dutcherson." Angela shook the lady's hand.
"Nice to meet ya.. follow me."
They followed Tara back to several cages.
"There he is." Tara pointed to a little dog.
He was back in the corner of his cage. He was shaking pretty badly.
"Toby.." Tara said to the dog.
The dog looked up at the lady.
Tara unlocked the cage door, "I'll give you a few minutes to meet him. I'll be at my office." She left the room.
Angela got on her knees at the entrance of the cage.
"Hello Toby..." she said softly, she held her hand out.
The dog looked at her hand thoughtfully.
Randall hunkered down beside Angela on the floor. He turned to his original color.
"Randall what are you doing? Someone could see you..."
He looked over at her, "I'll be fine."
Angela patted Randall on the shoulder, "Be careful."
"Come here Toby..." Angela reached her hand further in the cage.
The dog sniffed her hand.
"Good boy."
The dog sniffed a few more times and came closer to Angela.
She pet it, she was very gentle.
The dog didn't seem afraid of Randall to his surprise.
The dog came out of the cage completely and sat next to Angela.
"Toby is a good boy!" Angela said excided as she pulled out a treat in her pocket.
Randall stood up slowly and stretched out. Being invisible so long took a lot of energy.
"Miss Dutcherson! There is an animal behind you!" Tara yelled bursting into the room.
Randall bent down towards Angela, turning invisible wouldn't have helped.
"Oh this is my pet. Don't worry, he's nice." Angela improvised, she patted Randall on the head like a dog.
"I didn't see it, he, come in.."
"Oh he came in, right behind me. You were talking, so you didn't see."
"What kind of animal is he?"
"Lizard." Angela patted Toby on the head. Trying to turn the attention on him.
"Is he good with dogs?"
"Mm-hm, Toby likes him."
"I see that, are you adopting Toby?"
"Yeah."
"Okay. We'll put Toby back in his cage until the papers are done."
ANGELA'S POV
After Toby was safe in his cage, they followed Tara back to her office. Angela could tell Randall was uncomfortable showing himself to humans, who he didn't fully trust yet.
Did Randall trust her?
Angela took a seat and Randall laid on the floor beside her. Randall couldn't see over the desk and Angela knew that it was driving him nuts. He was a very curious monster.
"What happened to you arm?" Tara asked as Angela signed some of the papers.
"Oh, some dogs."
"I see, happens a lot to me...Now your lizard is quite fascinating."
"Yes he is."
"Does he have a name?"
"Randall."
"Oh i see. Does he know any tricks?"
"A few." Angela shot Randall a glance. He looked at her like 'no you didn't.'
"Is he very friendly?"
"To close relatives and me obviously. He's not the best around most people, he has to know them first."
"Did you adopt him? Find him? Breed him?"
"Actually, my sister found him. She found him in Louisiana."
RANDALL'S POV
"That makes sense. Probably some type of dog and gator mix." He heard Tara say.
His head shot up at the sound of 'gator'. It started to remind him of his time with the shovel. He started to growl.
"Is his okay?" Tara asked.
"I'm sure he's fine." Angela reached down and softly pet him on the back. He stopped growling.
Angela pet him until she was done with whatever business they were doing.
"Okay, Toby is now your dog!" Tara said excitedly.
"Thanks." Angela shook Tara's hand and went back to Toby's cage. Toby was happy to see her.
Angela hooked a new leash and collar up to Toby and took him out to their car.
"Here you go!" She said lifting him up. She put him in the back of the car, the trunk had a cage in it.
Toby looked pretty frightened.
"Okay, you can sit up front." Angela took Toby with her to the driver side. Randall had just gotten into his side.
Angela got into the car, Toby was on her lap. She started the engine.
On the drive home, Toby had laid down on her lap and had his face kneeling on her knee. She kept one hand on Toby and one on the wheel. She continuously pet the dog on the head.
Angela was very caring, no wonder all animals loved her. Randall had liked her more than Abby from the start.
She pulled down the driveway to the shelter. She was greeted by several dogs who were out on the 'run.'
Randall got out and carried a cat food bag into the shelter. Angela had taken Toby up to her house. He wasn't sure if Toby was really going up for adoption or not. Angela had really liked him.
She came back outside and helped carry two bags to the cat room.
"Thanks Randall," she said as he laid his last bag down in the pantry.
"No problem."
"I should pay you for that, but what would you use human money for." She laughed.
"Yeah really." He laughed.
ANGELA'S POV
Angela went to where she put Toby. Which was in the room where Randall used to be.
Randall followed.
She was going to bath Toby.
"I'm just gonna bath Toby. Do you want to bath Rudy?" She asked him, getting Toby out of the cage.
"Okay," he replied.
"Go get her, use the red leash."
"Okay." He left the room and went to get Rudy.
She took Toby over to the other room where Rudy was. Randall had her on a leash and walked her over to meet Angela and Toby.
Rudy sniffed at Toby but just wanted to see Angela.
She pet Rudy and lead them to the 'bathing room'.
This was where Abby did her vet business. The room was a dark teal color. It had a large examination table, two large tubs, and a large cabinet. She lifted Toby up into the one tub and hooked his leash to the tub. Randall did the same with Rudy.
Rudy liked Randall it seemed, she didn't mind that a giant lizard lifted her.
She went to the cabinet and grabbed several towels. She handed Randall a few.
She grabbed shampoo bottles also.
Randall followed Angela's every move.
"You don't have to wash her, I can do her when I'm done with him."
"No its okay. Better than doing nothing."
At least he had a good attitude.
They finished washing the dogs and put them outside to dry in the sun and fresh air.
RANDALL'S POV
Angela walked along the run with Toby. He didn't run away.
"Is he going up for adoption?" Randall asked Angela. He walked along beside her.
"Well, I don't know. I like him too much." Angela pet the dog.
They walked until the run ended, then they walked back.
Once they got to the shelter again, Abby was there.
"He is pretty cute," Abby said as she watered flowers.
"Mm-hm. I gave him and Rudy a bath. Well Randall washed Rudy."
"Oh, cool. What are we having for supper?" Abby asked quite rudely.
"Mystery meat," Angela replied jokingly.
"No really..."
"Steak... I'm pretty sure you'll like that, Randall."
"What did I have when I first got here?" He asked.
"Steak."
"Mm." He did like steak.
ANGELA'S POV
Angela and Randall put the dogs away. She decided to let Toby stay in the house. She was most likely going to keep Toby.
Randall sat at the table while she started the steak on the grill. It sure smelled good.
"How do you want your steak?" She asked Randall, coming inside.
"What do you mean?"
"Raw or cooked completely."
"How do you eat yours?" He asked.
"Well its called 'Medium Rare' its cooked but has a pink center."
"I'll take that."
" Okay," she said as she went back outside. They had a small deck with a grill and several chairs.
After a while, she finished the steaks. She took them inside. Abby had made butter noodles and corn as sides. Randall had set the table and had drinks ready.
She sat the plates down and they ate.
By Randall's expression, he really liked steak.
RANDALL'S POV
The rest of the night went by quick. Before he knew it, Randall was heading up to his 'room'.
Angela said that she would get him up at 7:30.
He laid down and went to sleep.
He had a dream that he was back in the Louisiana trailer park. He was being beaten again with the shovel. The only thing was both the boy and mother had shovels. Randall was trying to fight back, but he couldn't. Humans were too strong...
ANGELA'S POV
" Ring! Ring! Ring!"
Angela reached over and turned off her alarm clock. She stretched out and stood up. She put on her work clothes. Which consisted of khaki shorts and a purple version of the company shirts. On the front it read 'Abby and Angela's Pet Palace: Adoption Shelter and Veterinary Clinic.'
She put her contacts in and put on a little makeup. She went out to the kitchen and sat at the table.
If Randall didn't get up in 5 minutes, she would go wake him up.
She started coffee and started to make toaster waffles.
She looked at the time, 7:27.
She decided to go wake Randall up. Abby came out just in time to finish the waffles.
She went up the stairs quietly. She opened the door to the attic cautiously.
Randall was sleeping.
She went over to him.
RANDALL'S POV
The humans put him in a cage.
"Randall!" The one yelled. How did they know his name?
They poked him with the stick. He looked over, the woman had her hand on Randall'a shoulder. She wasn't paying attention. He lunged and grabbed her hand. He bit down hard. He twisted his head around.
He woke up to a scream, a very loud scream.
He was biting Angela!
He didn't fully think it was true until she kicked him. He fell the ground, still holding on.
He let go and got close to the floor. He could taste her blood, he spat it on the ground. What did he just do!?!
"You monster!" Angela yelled at him.
Abby came running up the stairs, "ANGELA!" she yelled.
Randall looked at what he did. Angela's left arm was almost shredded. It was limp and bloody.
Angela looked at him and then blacked out, she fell to the ground.
Abby picked up Angela and left. She shut and locked the door to the attic.
Randall sat on the cot, starring at the bloody ground. He was a monster.
Why did he do that to the only friend he had?!?
He walked around in circles for what felt like hours. He was shaking pretty badly too.
He couldn't believe he bit her! He had blood all over his mouth, what an awful person he was. Angela was so nice, and he did this to her. He could picture her yelling, "You monster!" Over and over in his head. She was right, he was a monster. An evil, worthless, dumb monster. He even thought for a few moments that he was crying. He never cried, but this was a good time.
He sat in the corner when he heard the door open.
He turned around, it was Abby. She had two long poles.
She walked towards him cautiously, she was afraid for her life of him.
He hunkered down, but allowed her to put both poles over his head.
She literally dragged him across the room, down the stairs, and into the room where he used to be.
She pushed him into a cage and slammed him to the back of it. He let her without growling, he deserved it.
She shut the cage and pulled out the poles.
She grabbed what looked like the treat bag that Angela bought at the store.
"This is for the things you did!" She threw a treat at him. It stung momentarily. She was not feeding him the treats, she was hitting him with them.
"Here is for Angela!" She hurled another at him.
"For the blood!" Another treat, this one hit him in the face.
"For the surgery!" She threw another.
Angela had to get a surgery because of him? He felt awful.
He sat down in the middle the cage. He curled up in a somewhat ball.
"For the doctor bill!" She whipped another at his back.
"For the pain!" She whipped two at him.
"For the chance that she might loose her entire arm!" She threw a handful at him.
He curled up tighter and started to cry again. Forever, she would look at her nonexistent arm and think of him.
"For the heartbreak!" She threw several treats at him.
He looked over at her.
"Don't act like you didn't know!" She threw a treat at him.
He did like Angela a lot, and she liked him too. They could've maybe stood a chance... if he wouldn't have bit her.
"I don't know what to do.." Abby said throwing the last treat at him.
"What were you thinking..." Abby asked him, disgusted.
"She didn't deserve that. She treated you so nice, and you do that in return."
He kept in the ball. He had a lot on his mind.
ANGELA'S POV
Once the darkness of the blackout faded away, Angela was in a deep sleep.
She woke up, she jumped up.
She was in the middle of a classroom. This wasn't just any classroom, this was a classroom full of monsters.
Monsters of all shapes and sizes surrounded her. She saw one that Randall was talking about earlier. A ball shaped green monster with one eye, Mike. He was sitting almost next to her.
No one seemed to notice her, like she was invisible to them.
"Hello?" She waved her hand in front of Mike. No one heard her or saw her.
"Hey Randy!" Mike got up and waved at someone.
Angela turned to see who 'Randy' was.
Randall, in a much younger form, walked nervously into the classroom. He took a seat next to Mike, which was beside Angela.
Randall, who was Randy, had large purple glasses on. He sat down and looked around, he looked scared. He played with his hands nervously.
"I'm so nervous..." Randall said.
"Don't worry, everything will be fine." Mike assured Randall.
Was Randall friends with Mike? She thought Mike was the one who banished him.
Wasn't there a Sally, or Sammy, or...
"Sully.." Mike said disgusted to Randall.
Randall, or Randy, rolled his eyes.
Sully, that was who actually threw Randall in the human world.
He was walking past them.
He was a large blue monster.
He sat beside a dark purple monster with two large horns. The monster had a red coat on that said 'ROR.'
Angela went up to where Sully was sitting.
"Look at Wazoski. What a teachers pet." Sully said to the other monster.
"Yeah, look a his nervous little friend." The monster and Sully started to laugh.
"That's Randy. You scare him and he turns invisible."
The two laughed.
"Watch this.." the monster hunkered down and went over by where Randy was sitting.
"Gahhh!" The monster yelled at Randy.
Randy turned invisible, scared to death. Just his glasses floated.
The other monster laughed, and Sully gave him a high-five.
A few other monsters laughed at Randy. The glasses floated over to Mike's hand and dropped. Angela could still see the creases in the chair, Randy was still there.
Randy probably couldn't control his invisibility.
Angela felt bad, no wonder Randall had changed into someone tougher.
Angela slowly was pulled into another dark place.
She woke up in a factory or something.
A little red monster was close to her. Again, no one could see her.
"Scarers will now enter the scare floor!" He yelled.
A large group of monsters walked down the isle in front of them. As they got closer, she saw Randall and Sully. They were scarers, where was Mike...
Mike was standing across from a door. Sully walked over to Mike.
Randall walked over to a little red monster with 3 eyes. Angela walked over to where Randall was.
"Fungus, let's practice!" Randall yelled at the little monster.
The little monster, Fungus, nervously pulled down backgrounds. Randall changed into them.
Sully stretched out. The two scared right beside each other.
Sully said to Randall, "Hey, good luck."
"You'll need it." Randall replied before charging into the kids' room.
This must've been after Randall changed.
Randall came out of the room, and looked up at the score board.
"Boggs!" Someone yelled.
Angela turned to see her monster!
"Mr. Waternoose." Randall slithered over to him.
"Can I ask you a question?"
" Of course!"
" In private, my boy." Mr. Waternoose lead Randall out of the scare floor.
Angela followed the two.
"I have plans to build a machine that will revolutionize the scaring industry," Mr. Waternoose said.
"And what do I have to do with this machine, sir?"
"I want you to build it, my talented boy."
Angela snickered at the word 'boy'.
"What a creep.." she said aloud.
"And if I build it?"
"I'll be very proud of you. And maybe I can play around with the score board. And I'll of course give you credit, my boy."
"Alright, sir. When do I start?"
"As soon as you want." The two shook hands.
Angela went into another dark place.
She woke up in a gigantic room full of moving doors. She was on some type of platform. She looked over the side. At least a 100,000 feet drop to the bottom.
She heard Mike.
"Bring him down here, Sully." Mike dropped from a moving door and landed about 10 feet away from her.
Sully dropped down behind him. He had Randall held in his hand by the neck. He had a little monster in his other hand.
He sat the other monster down and it jumped up. It was a little girl!
Was this the one Randall kidnapped?
Mike grabbed a door and sat it up against the railing. A bright red light shone on the top of it.
Sully held Randall with two hands.
Mike opened the door, Sully started to swing Randall back and fourth.
"No, no! Please! No! No! Please! Noooooooooooooo!" Randall yelled as he was thrown in the door. Angela quickly ran in the door behind Randall.
Mike shut the door.
"Momma! Another gator got in the house!" A boy yelled, pointing at Randall.
"Hand me that shovel!"
"No!" Angela yelled.
The woman started to beat Randall.
"No!" Angela yelled trying to grab the shovel. Her hands went right through it.
Angela sat down and cried helplessly as Randall was brutally beaten by this crazy woman before her eyes.
Angela went into another dark place.
Angela woke up in the shelter. She was in the room that Randall used to be kept.
She looked in each cage... Randall!
She went over to the cage. Randall was curled up into a ball, he was crying silently.
He was very slowly rocking back and forth. This was present time, the others were past. She didn't look forward to seeing future.
"Randall?" Angela said walking through the cage.
He didn't hear her.
She walked over and sat in front of him. He looked so sad.
"She called me a monster," he said looking at his hands.
He started to fiddle with them, like in the classroom.
He whipped his eyes.
"She hates me now.."
"No I don't. I was out of it when I said that." Even though he couldn't hear her, she still spoke.
"I'm a monster," he said.
He curled up tighter.
He looked so upset.
He did bite her and it definitely hurt, but after seeing what he went through she forgave him.
He probably thought it was the shovel lady.
"I'm so sorry.." he said as she drifted into another dark place.
She woke up in Abby's office.
She saw Abby talking on the phone.
She left the room and went to where Randall should've been.
The cage was open. She walked over to it, a euthanasia needle was laying on the ground.
It was empty.
"No!" Angela yelled. She got on her knees and started to cry.
" Calm down." Someone said.
"Who is it?"
"The future," it replied.
"Does Randall die?"
"Well, do you forgive him?" It asked.
"Yeah! Yeah!"
"Then, here's the future.." it drifted. Angela went back into the dark place.
The dark place turned into a bright place.
"Good morning, Miss Dutcherson," someone said.
Angela looked over to see a doctor standing beside her.
Angela sat up.
"Go get her sister," he said alound. A nurse left the room.
"Can you see me?" Angela asked.
"Yes, Miss Dutcherson."
"Angela!" Abby yelled coming into the room.
"Hey Abby!"
"How you feeling?"
"Perfectly fine." Angela looked over at her arm, it was in sling and a cast.
"Is my arm gonna make it?" Angela asked the doctor.
"Yep, it will hurt for a while. It should heal perfectly fine. You may have a nasty bite scar though."
"That's okay."
"Can you try to move your fingers?"
Angela moved her fingers.
" Looks good, I think you will be able to go once I get the report printed."
"Okay."
The doctor left the room.
"What do you want me to do with Randall?"
"Well he's still in that cage right?"
"Um, how do you know that I put him in a cage?"
" A guess."
"Well what do you want to do with him?"
"Let him out."
"What!?! He attacked you!"
"Well I forgive him."
"You're crazy! Heck I would..."
"What?"
"Nothing..."
"Tell me!"
"Euthanize him.."
"His been through a lot. He deserves a second chance."
"You like him."
"Of course I do."
"No, like more than a friend."
"No," Angela replied. She did like Randall's personality.
"Okay Angela, you're free to go." The doctor came into the room with a paper.
Angela jumped up and got off the bed.
"You can't take the gown," the doctor said.
Angela looked down at her hospital gown.
"Where is my clothes?" Angela asked Abby.
The doctor left the room, after giving Abby a stack of papers.
"In the trash. They were all bloody."
"Oh... then what am I gonna where?"
Abby handed her a bag, it had some clothes in it from home.
Angela changed in the bathroom, getting the shirt on was the hardest. Abby packed Angela bright red pants with a gray and black shirt. Something Angela wouldn't have normally worn.
She looked at her arm. Hopefully in a week or two, the sling would be gone.
Angela followed Abby to her car. Then they left, on their way home.
RANDALL'S POV
Randall was sitting in the corner of the cage.
Abby had left at least 2 hours ago. Hopefully, Angela was alright.
He heard a car coming down the drive. A few of the dogs in the other room started to bark.
He took a deep breath. He really wanted to know what went on, and especially if her arm would make it.
He heard car doors shutting.
In his mind, Angela's scream replayed over and over. Also, "You're a monster!" kept repeating.
He was a monster, he didn't deserve any chances. She was so nice....
He heard the main door open.
He heard voices, but they were muffled.
He heard footsteps getting closer, the door opened.
Abby's head peaked in.
"Whatever," she said to someone.
"Let me in!" He heard Angela say.
"You really want to.." the door shut, again it was muffled.
Angela and Abby's voices went back and fourth.
Randall curled up a little tighter. He wasn't sure what they were talking about.
The door opened again.
"You sure?" Abby asked.
"Abby! Get!" Angela replied.
The door opened further and Angela walked in.
Randall looked at her arm, it was in a sling over her shoulder. She stood at the doorway, the door slowly closed behind her.
She didn't say anything and neither did he, they both just starred at each other.
ANGELA'S POV
Randall was just how he was in her dream. He looked broken and sad.
She walked over to the cage. He looked up at her, his eyes were watery.
RANDALL'S POV
Angela bent down, she was at eye level with him.
She breathed heavily. He looked at her in the eyes and then looked down.
He was such a bad person.
"I'm sorry.." he started.
"I know you are," she replied casually. What she said took him by a slight surprise.
She stood up.
"I didn't mean to..."
"I know..." she unlatched the cage. She bent back down at the entrance.
"What are you doing? I don't want to hurt you."
"Why would you hurt me?"
"I'm a monster...Like what you said earlier.."
She didn't reply.
"I didn't mean to hurt you, I thought you were...." he couldn't say it.
"A bad person?"
"Sorta."
"Why do you think you would hurt me?"
"I...I can't control myself.."
"Yes you can.. you are a great person."
"Why are you being so nice?!? I don't deserve nice people!" He yelled. He turned around and faced the wall.
ANGELA'S POV
Angela looked down. What did Randall go through that she didn't see? This poor guy must have had a bad childhood or something..more than just a deceased father.
"Everyone does," she answered.
"I attacked you!?! You were nice to me and I attacked you!"
"I was nice to you, yes. But you didn't purposely attack me right?"
"Of course not."
"Then what were you attacking?"
"Um.."
"The shovel lady.." she said before she could stop herself.
He turned around and looked at her. He had a looked of disbelief and pain on his face.
"Yeah, her."
Angela stood up and went into the cage. She sat down next to the sympathetic Randall.
"She deserved a good bite, right?"
"Well yeah, but I didn't bite her I bit you... I'm so sorry." He curled up tighter and buried his head in his arms.
Angela reached her hand out and sat it on Randall's back. His back moved with her touch.
"I forgive you."
He looked over at her thoughtfully.
"All you've ever seen of humans was the bad stuff. Yeah I was 'nice' but there is a lot more to us that you haven't seen. Just like monsters, humans love, care, and feel compassion for one another. I'm sorry that you had to deal with the cruel part of us."
He looked at her, his eyes slightly more watery.
He, to her surprise, pulled her into a hug.
RANDALL'S POV
Randall let the hug go. Angela smiled at him.
Never had he thought that he would hug a human, but with Angela he wanted more than a hug...
Angela stood up and got out of the cage.
"Come on.... let's eat."
"I can't..." Randall backed up in the cage.
ANGELA'S POV
" Why can't you?"
"I don't want to hurt anyone." Randall looked down, he started to fiddle with his fingers.
Angela reached out her good hand and held his fiddling fingers still.
He looked at her, his bright green eyes starring at her. His eyes were so pretty.
"Stop fidgeting," Angela said as she felt his hands fiddle again.
"Can't help it," he held out his one hand and it continued to shake nervously.
Angela leaned in and kissed Randall on the cheek.
He froze, no more fiddling fingers. He smiled and got all red.
"That stopped it," Angela said matter-of-factly.
"Well...yeah.." Randall brushed back his fronds, which rose when she kissed him. He looked like the Randy she saw in her dream, if that Randy kissed the prettiest monster cheerleader in the school. He smiled at her, his bright green eyes looked happier.
"Let's go make food..." she said ushering him out of the cage.
He stopped, "I can't."
" Yes you can."
He took a deep breath. He started to get sad looking again.
"What's wrong?" She asked him.
"I am just trouble. Without me your, everyone's, life would be simpler. I just cause bad things, I'm worthless."
"Now, who told you that?!?" Angela practically yelled at him for thinking such a thing.
He looked down.
"Cause who ever they are, were, they didn't know what they were missing out on. Look you made a mistake, everyone makes mistakes!"
He looked down, "Not that big of mistakes."
"Sit down," Angela said sitting down on the cement floor.
He sat down across from her.
"Tell me what you think of yourself. Then I'll tell what I think of myself," Angela said.
Randall looked at her.
"I'm being serious, I'm gonna end this."
"Um.. okay. I think I'm worthless. I'm a loner. I'm a loser. I can't get any friends. I'm hated by...everyone. I'm second best. I'm a failure. I'll never have a girlfriend. I have an awful personality. And I'm ugly." Randall finished and sighed loudly, "Your turn."
"Okay. I'm pathetic. I'm fake. I'm fat. I'm ugly. I'm hated by everyone. I'm stupid. I'm a geek. I'm just annoying. I can't stand myself. My eyes are ugly. I'm not pretty. I'll never, ever, have a boyfriend. I'll never get married, or have kids. My face is fat. I'm a failure. I'm a college dropout, and I have no friends. And I'm an awful person," Angela finished.
"That ain't true!" Randall yelled.
"What you said ain't true either."
He looked down.
"Can I ask a somewhat personal question?" Angela asked.
"Have at it," Randall said with a sigh.
"Did your mother ever say she loved you?"
He looked over at her. His eyes were sad, but truthful. He shook his head no and looked down at the ground.
Angela could feel the tears coming on.
"How could you tell?" Randall asked, still looking at the ground.
Angela couldn't answer, she was crying silently.
He looked over at her, and she hid her face with shame.
"Angela, that was a while ago." He slid next to her.
Angela whipped a tear off her cheek with the sling.
"Randall, I'm sorry." Angela looked him in the eye.
"Don't cry..." Randall said. His eyes started to water.
"Awe, Randall. You have a weakness," Angela said hugging him.
"I guess I do," he laughed and hugged her back.
Randall was turning into the old 'Randy' it seemed. Angela dropped the whole 'mom and love' thing, before she cried again.
RANDALL'S POV
Angela's tear covered face, leaned against Randall's shoulder as he hugged her tighter.
"So what's your weakness?" Randall asked.
"I don't know..."
"You have to know," he said jokingly.
"Your bright, beautiful, green eyes," Angela replied casually, looking up at him.
He smiled and put his face up against hers, he looked into her eyes.
"Oh, stop, it!" Angela jokingly pushed his face away.
He laughed and put his face up against hers again. She went to turn but ended up putting her lips against his. They looked it to each others eyes at first, but ending up closing them as they continued to kiss.
ANGELA'S POV
( A month later, a Sunday)
"Ring! Ring! Ri..." Angela's alarm clocked stopped.
Angela took the pillow off of her head and looked over to see Randall standing beside her bed.
She flipped over and faced the other way, "What are you doing in my room?"
"Why is your alarm clock ringing on a Sunday?" Randall asked slowly getting into the bed beside her.
"Its my nieces birthday today."
"Oh really?!?"
"Mm-hm, and your supposedly going back tonight. Remember?" Angela flipped over and looked at Randall.
"Oh, yeah...but if you want me to stay.."
Angela laughed, "Uh-huh! I'm the reason your staying?" Angela snickered.
"Oh so you want me to go?" Randall asked sarcastically.
"No, silly." Angela hit him with the pillow.
He hit her back, in the bad arm.
"Ow!" She yelled fakely.
His fronds went back, "Oh I'm sorry!" Randall yelled, sounding concerned.
Angela started to laugh, "Kidding!"
Randall looked relieved.
She pulled him in for a kiss, he pulled her in tighter.
Randall's mother maybe didn't tell him she loved him, but Angela sure did. For once, Randall knew someone who he actually enjoyed spending time with. Maybe a little too much time...
The only problem was....how to tell Abby...
The new couple wanted to express their love in front of people, but alone was good enough for now.
This new life, for both of them, was going great. And it only got better.
