What would be the human equivalent of a scarer? The scene at the beginning hints at astronauts, but Wazowski and Sully share what seems to be a small apartment, and I don't think astronauts have to skimp on money like that. What dangerous but low paying jobs do we have that would compare. Maybe cops or firemen?

TEACHERS! No, I'm not kidding, either.
The Scarers would be comparable to the electric linemen who work for the electric companies(and that's what M.I. was-an electric company)here. They work with dangerous electricity, often in bad weather conditions, and don't make very good pay, roughly about the same as what teachers make, which breaks down to less than a waitress at a steak house brings home.

And if an electric lineman did something heroic (equivalent to being the top scarer), like saving a child's life, I could see him being in the news and being asked for an autograph! Good answer, as always, pitbulllady, This answer reminds me of the Andy Griffith episode "Mr. McBeevee". And I know that dates me.

Good answer, as always, pitbulllady, This answer reminds me of the Andy Griffith episode "Mr. McBeevee". And I know that dates me. If you live in "Hurricane Ally", like I do, linemen are always heroes! When your power finally comes back on after oh, three weeks, believe me, you'll want to hug each and every one of them! They DO, in fact, save lives on a daily basis, by catching potential overloads that can and do result in fires and explosions. One of my best friends, now deceased, worked for what was then Carolina Power and Light Co, Inc.(now Progress Energy Carolinas, Inc.), and would tell horror stories of situations she had to deal with, often having to climb utility poles in the midst of ferocious lightning storms and such. She had to pull an angry, scared, fully-grown bobcat from the top of a power pole once, risking her own safety over that of both the animal and anyone who was too close if it had happened to touch the wrong spot on the pole. She used only gloves, no catch pole, and was desperate to get the cat down before it either touched a wire, or before animal control got there and shot it. In actuality, Randall's work with the Scream Extractor was more dangerous than Scaring, since he was working directly with the bi-product of Scream energy, raw electricity. He had to have a great deal of knowledge about electric technology to do so and avoid becoming a large order of Crispy Fries! That low-frequency hum you hear in the background down there in the refinery is pure electricity, and you can imagine the effect it must have had on Randall's health, working down there with it, day in and day out, when just living next to electric sub-stations has been linked to serious health problems in humans. pitbulllady

Definently workers in the power industry, as that's basically what M.I. is ^_^ Though of course it's the largest corporation in the Monster World, so a way to think of it is an equivilant of ALL energy in this world as one corporation.
*tabs pencil at the thought of Randall as a teacher*....Well..He WAS a trainer at one point heh ^_^
Well when you think about it, why there would be a child in the first place in a human electrical-collection-harnassing facility is questionable 0_- Unless of course it's "bring your kids to a potentially dangerous place for them" day ^0^
Actually I think Randall was lucky enough not to face such a problem directly with the extractor. However, the pipe work down there....you CAN see steam and the like going through the pipes...and to my knowledge Sullivan himself was at some point down there...so they DID once have workers down there monitoring everything...but it seems...there's nobody down there anymore...
