So, what did you all think of Live8? I thought it was a very good idea and stuff, but it seemed as though it benefitted the stars a bit too much...

"Live8", Sean, was a huge concert/celeb event put together by Bob Geldof, who organized the "We Are The World" benefits for Ethiopia back in the '80s. It is supposed to raise money for, and draw attention to, the plight of many African nations. What it REALLY did, in my opinion, was to draw attention to the celebs themselves. Case in point: each celebrity who participated received a "gift basket" valued at $12,000.00. Now I ask you this: wouldn't that money have been better spent on the people of Africa? It's clear that the people involved are doing it only for self-publicity, if they have to be given THAT sort of incentive to participate. Most of the money raised, as with the efforts in the '80s, will end up in the hands of warlords and will never get to the people of the oppressed countries.

It does make you wonder just what they were thinkin'! Seriously, if someone is REALLY serious about helping others, just knowing that they have done so, and made someone's day a little better, is reward enough. They don't need to see their names on big marquees or on the cover of every trendy magazine, or get a $12,000.00 gift basket as a reward. That's just self-promotion, really.

You seriously haven't heard about Live 8, Sean? Wasn't it big in America? Anyway, yeah, I completely agree that it was just a big publicity stunt for the stars. It probably made next to no difference for the people in Africa.

I didn't know they were payed to do it. the money would have been better spent actually helpping the African people. I agree there was a lot of self promotion. On the other hand it DID draw attention to the plight of people in Africa. People are more likely to donate money if a celebrity tells them to. Most people are so apathetic they won't do anything unless a celebrity tells them to.
