Yes, some tarantulas are VERY expensive, especially adult females. Others are much cheaper because they are either imported in large numbers, or they are native and be caught with a bit of effort if you live in the right place. I have a lot of different Aphonopelma species, which are native to the southwestern United States. People just go flush 'em out of the burrows in their backyards in TX, CA, AZ or wherever, and box 'em up and mail them to me. They aren't as big or colorful as some of the more exotic species, but they aren't very expensive, either, and they are usually very docile. Others like the Brazilian Black birdeaters can cost a lot of money, though.

Lol I have a parrot...she apparently thinks the snake's tank (and the fish's tank) are TV sets. Because they're glass and she can't get in, therefore the "moving picture" isn't real! She's weird. She watches them like TV and isn't at all concerned when the betta tries to eat her face. (I don't hold her next to the snake's tank, I don't want to stress Duchess, she's so touchy.)

I've had Bettas that thought they were Great White Sharks, too-so funny in an animal only a couple of inches long, yet it will happily attack something thousands of times bigger! Talk about a Napoleonic Complex! I know what you mean about "touchy" Ball Pythons, too, which is why this is one species of snake I don't keep. They are just so finicky and peculiar sometimes. I'd rather have something like a Cornsnake or a Coachwhip that will eat anything you throw in with it, any time of day or night, without counting to see if it has too many white hairs, or any of those little things that Ball Pythons seem to worry about.

Yay there's a reptile show in Sacramento next weekend! I'm going!! I'll bring my camera. I honestly don't think I'll be coming home with any critters though; even though I'd love a tarantula and have an enclosure for one I haven't started researching yet so I have no clue what kind would be best for me. Oh well. I'll just browse. I also hope to find a good local supplier for frozen rodents - I buy mine individually at a pet shop down the street and they're expensive! Especially since snobby Duchess prefers two mice a week to one small rat...I'd have some shipped to me but as I'm never home during the day I don't know how that would work, having something frozen shipped when I'm not here to receive it...And no, I'm not going to ask my boss if I can have dead mice shipped to me at the office - oh and can I store them in the breakroom freezer until quittin' time? Lol.

There's a reptile show in Spartenberg, SC, next weekend, too..AND it's my birthday! Now how great is THAT? Fortunately for me, I know a rodent breeder who supplies me with all the rats and mice I need, at rock-bottom prices, and he's just a little over an hour away, so I can drive and pick them up. I can get anything from "pinkies" to big humongous jumbo rats the size of possums! I can get frozen or live, though I prefer frozen because they don't bite and don't aggravate my allergies as bad as live ones(I'm horribly allergic to rodents). Anyone who opened MY freezer at home would be in for a surprise, I can tell you that much!
As for a tarantula, IF you have a bit of money to spend, and can find one available, get either a "Chaco Gold-Knee"(Grammostola aureostriata), a "Brazilian Black"(Grammostola pulchra) or a "Pink Zebra Beauty"(Eupaulaestrus campestratus) ADULT FEMALE. If the buyer can't pretty much guarantee it's a female, don't bother. You'd just end up spending a lot of money on an animal that will likely die in a few months, since male tarantulas have a notoriously short lifespan, while a female will probably still be around when YOUR kids are old enough to take care of her! Another very good species, though not really colorful, is your native Californian Aphonopelma iodius. I have one which actually was shipped to me, freshy wild-caught, from the Sacramento area, and she is very sweet. I have another CA native, Aphonopelma eutylenum, which is a bit of a bee-atch, if you know what I mean, though. If I'm not mistaken, there is a big tarantula dealer, Scott's Tarantulas, owned by Scott Beamis, is that area, from whom I've bought several spiders myself, and his prices are really good. Hopefully he will be at that show. If nothing else, get yourself a few gallon jugs of water, a deli cup with a lid, and head out to the countryside and look for little burrows with lots of webbing around them, pour some water slowly down the burrow, and wait for a female Aphonopelma to come high-stepping out, shaking off her wet footsies like a cat(tarantulas HATE to get their feet wet), and just gently prod her bottom and guide her into the deli cut(be sure to poke some holes in it first), and you've got yourself a tarantula! Be glad you can live where they are found, in abundance-I have to pay for mine, since we don't have them in South Carolina, and Wolf Spiders just don't play well with others!
