Yes, obedience training would help, but it's also important NOT to let a dog, especially one that is part ANY kind of terrier(and I believe you said she was part Pit Bull, which IS a terrier)or hunting or herding breed off-leash, even in your yard, unless you have a fenced yard. These dogs have high prey drives, which means they instinctively go after things that run. Part of the fault is with the kids, since RUNNING away is the WORST thing you can do when confronted by a dog, whether it acts aggressive or not, as this automaticaly triggers that prey drive. I know it sound awful to have to take the dog out on a leash to do her "business", but in this day and age, of very strong anti-dog sentiment(ESPECIALLY if the dog remotely looks like a Pit Bull or Rottweiler), when so many laws are being enacted to bring about the extinction of dogs of ALL kinds, you simply cannot take chances any longer. The days when dogs could run free and loose, even on your property, have sadly gone the way of the days when you and your family could go off for a week on vacation and leave the house unlocked, or parents could drop off kids uptown for a day of shopping and hanging out with friends, and not have to worry about some pervert kidnapping them. You are VERY lucky that the animal control officers did not seize your dog and kill her, and fine your family heavily, and post this "attack" on the front page of every newspaper in the state as yet-another "Pit Bull Mauling". Even on huge farms out in the country, it's very risky to let dogs run loose unattended, and even then, bad things can happen. Dogs can encounter rattlesnakes, skunks, or LWA(Livestock With Attitudes), or wander off the property and get shot, poisoned, get in fights with other dogs or coyotes, hit by cars, etc. There are few places left where a dog can roam and NOT get into trouble. Your best bet, and MY advice-is to keep your dog, but take her out on a leash, so she is still under your control, either that or rig up a trolley that you can attach her to so she can get some fresh air and do her "business" when someone cannot walk her, or fence in the yard, and that last one is expensive as an option. I kow it sounds unfair, and it IS, really, since due to laws and changing attitudes about dogs, dogs are being forced to live like something OTHER than dogs, but just as we humans have to make concessions and sacrifices due to others' stupidity(good example-having to sign for any medicine containing Pseudophedrine, a common nasal decongestant, because idiots use it to manufacture "crystal methamphedimine", a very dangerous and highly addictive illegal street drug). It's a sign of the times. pitbulllady

Personally, I'd let Sunny choose.
However, Pitbulllady is more wiser in such manners so I believe she has the best advice.

Personally, I'd let Sunny choose. However, Pitbulllady is more wiser in such manners so I believe she has the best advice. Now, come on, Sean, you KNOW the dog cannot make a choice between living with her current family/pack, and going off to the country to be with some total stranger! She cannot even comprehend that; what are you gonna do, ASK her, and expect her to answer? Dogs are like little kids; they do what makes THEM feel good, which is NOT necessarily the same thing as what's good FOR them. That's where intelligent and informed owners, like intelligent and informed parents, come into play, since unlike a dog or a child, they are able to make decisions for what is best. Dogs can bond very strongly with their human "pack", and to separate them is going to create some stress, no doubt, probably worse than having to take her walks on a leash on familiar territory would. pitbulllady

*shrugs* You could do one of those things where you put the dog in the middle and have both sides call it over. That sort of thing.

Well, if I were you Veg, then I'd choose what's best for the dog. I know it must be very hard, since animals can seem as though they are a part of the family, but if you know that she will be happier there...But if what Pitbulllady said about terriers needing to be kept on a leash at all times, then it seems as though it would not make any difference where Sunny is- even if she was given to your uncle's neighbour, she'd really have to be kept on a leash anyway.

Makes me wonder... Why'd they run away from the dog in the first place?
