Prologue
Yoruhoshi’s POV:
“Princess? Princess, where are you?” his voice came to me over the cold air. I grumbled and shifted back further on my branch to avoid being seen. I really was in a bad mood this day, and having my father send the Master Mage out to find me helped none. The day had started out normally enough. I had been talking with my best friend, Katchi, about what we had planned that weekend. But when my brother, Kyte, had come outside, Katchi started giving him all of her attention. After a moment's confusion, I repeatedly tried to get their attention. But I must have been too impatient, and my constant nagging irritated them both. Finally Katchi had yelled at me, and I, hurt and angry, had ran off. Her words still rung in my ears and sent a sharp pain throughout my body.
"You're such a pain, Yoruhoshi! I wish you would just disappear!"
A tear ran down my cheek as I saw the entire scene replay in my head. In fact, it hurt so much I did want to disappear. I repressed a sob and happened to glance down the tree. I wasn't entirely shocked to see Morin's headfull of electric blue hair and his baby blue eyes directed up at me. If anything, I had forgotten that Morin was one of the few Master Mages in the world with a talent for tracking me down.
"Really love. You must come down." he said in his chocolatey, seductive voice. I rolled my eyes at him. He was always saying anything to make me like him. I leapt out of the tree and attempted to run away, but he grabbed my arm as gentle as he could.
"You shouldn't be running off like that. It's not fitting for a lady." he whispered. I glared at him and twisted my arm out of his grasp.
"If you cared about me at all, Morin, you'd do me a favor." I muttered.
"And that would be?" he said in a singsong voice, though he probably knew what I was going to say.
"Just go away and leave me the heck alone." I growled. He shook his head and smiled at me, the power in his eyes coming to the surface...he really creeps me out sometimes.
"No. That I cannot do. Now, come! We have to take you home, or your father is going to be very angry with us both, my dear." he said, and offered his hand to me. I didn't take it, but I followed him anyway. There are times when I would be happy to see Morin and take his hand, but I just wanted to disappear.
That's when it hit me. I would disappear. Nobody wanted me here anyway.
It must have been at least five hours since Morin had led me home. It was half an hour past midnight, and I couldn't hear anyone else in the house. I was definitely the only one awake, save for Snowball and Shadowking. They were my pets, and they knew I was going to leave. I was caught by Snowball on my way to the garden. He pulled desperately at my jeans leg. He had seen my backpack and didn't want me to go. Shadowking was right behind him, but his expression was harder to read in the dark. I crouched down and patted Snowball's ice-colored head. He butted against my hand and I scratched one of his ears.
"Sorry guys. But you have to stay here." I whispered. Snowball made a tiny whining sound and hung his head sadly.
"Don't worry. I'll be back. I just need to be alone for a while." I reassured him. I glanced up at Shadowking, but his face was completely stoic. It wasn't too surprising, so I turned away from them and walked further into the garden. There, in the middle of the clearing, was the magic circle on the pavement. It had always been there, and was usually used for summoning and banishing all sorts of things. I had figured, if it could work with Morin when he went to meetings, I could use it to get away from here for a while. I sifted through the spells I had learned before, all still in my mind. I whispered the words for a banishing spell, the phrase rolling off the end of my tongue. The magic flowed into the circle and began to build up around me. I know one of the key points for any teleportation-type spell is to know exactly where the subject is supposed to arrive. But I had no clear destination in my mind. I just wanted to get away...
I heard a voice show my name and running footsteps behind me, but it was too late. The spell engulfed my body, and I left that world behind...
