I went to see "The Island" last week with my brother, at my mother's insistance. You know, "Everyone's at work, go take your brother downtown and see something!". Anyway, that was the only movie I really wanted to see that I hadn't already seen, and Ian (my brother) had heard it was good, so...
Anyway, so I was sitting in the theatre, and the introductory scene was playing, and along the bottom of the screen there was the usual "Directed by" and names of the leading characters (they had the guy who played the young Obi Wan Kenobi as the main character), and immagine my surprise when Steve Buschimi's (sp? I can never spell it right...) name came up! I was waiting eagerly from that moment on to see him, knowing the movie was worth seeing just to see him, you know?
Well, he didn't get introduced until like, twenty minutes in, but I recognized him immidiately. ^_^ He's an important secondary character, much to my happiness. At first, his character seemed pretty nice, if a bit dirty (in the sense that he's scruffy looking and that he has pictures of women in bathing suits on his "office" walls - "Are those your friends? Where are their clothes?"). Then, the movie itself gets steadily darker, we find out that he knows more than he lets on about the more sinister aspects of the place (I'm trying not to spoil it for you guys - you gotta see it for yourselves!), and accepts them... Well... Anyway, he redeems himself later on, though. Woohoo! I seriously cheered when they're like "We're asking you to help us." and Steve's like "...fine". ^_^ And he helps them good!
Interesting parralel - Steve's character in the Island is a tecchie that does most of his work in an underground lab (not so secret, though) with lots of pipes and less than adequate lighting below a futuristic company building. Sound familiar?

Oh good....didn't ruin the film. I hope to see the island too, since Steve's in and I want to know how he's doing these days. Hmm....he was a professor in Spy Kids 2 wasn't he? Is a mad docter something he has connections with?
"Na...just really intellegent people....heh heh..."

Hmmm... It just occured to me that perhaps this thread should be with Steve's section in the People section of the Board? Can I move it without admin powers?

Don't worry- I'll move it. ;D Yeah, 'The Island' isn't out here yet- coming out on the 28th, I think- but I definitely plan to see it, since he has got a sizeable part in it. And yeah, Steve always seems to have characters that are good with mechanics; in Spy Kids, he's an inventor; in Final Fantasy, he's a mechanic; in Return To LA (I think that's what the film's called) he's a sort of mechanic/salesman- always characters that are good with their hands!

Thanks for moving it for me. ^_^ So why does it come out so much later over in Europe that over here? You'd link it'd come out like, within a week of each other or something.

It's all about release dates. Usually where something comes from, where it originates, is where it comes out first off.
Like how a japenese series is like. It starts at japan until someone buys the rights. For movies, if it's made in say, America, it starts in America and starts going over east.

But The Island isn't even in theatres anymore over here (apparently, I caught one of the last screenings) - I would have thought it'd be released by now in England. It's not like they have to translate it or anything.

....Do they have translate? Na. Anyway. Well...it should be....maybe when it leaves America theatre, to make room for the new additions and so that it can be made into DVD and video, it'll come over there.

Okay...I didn't like it. There was no character development aside from the clone's token discovery of...er...intimacy. Steve's character was really the only intriguing one, and I didn't think he got enough screen time or significant lines. Too much exploding, not enough script or general good moments. I didn't HATE it - there were some amusing moments like - "He's taking a dump? Taking it where?" Haha.

Okay, yeah, I admit that there wasn't a whole lot of character development, but you have to admit that the sets and the backstory were extremely well done, complex, etc. And yeah, there were quite a few explosions, and more than your daily ammount of chase scenes. I liked how that mercenary guy (you know, with that brand on his hand?) ended up helping what's her face at the end, too. I'm like, nuuu, you insensitive, hypocritical jerk! You're oppressing "inhuman" people like you yourself were! Nuuuu! Don't hurt her! ... Wait! ...Yes! Good! Keep going along those lines! ;D
Oh, yes, speaking of chase scenes... Ever since I saw that movie, I've been meaning to make an avatar... Notice that throughout like, the last two thirds of the movie, Licoln and what's her face (begins with an 'S"... on the tip of my tongue...) are chased like, everywhere? Mostly on foot? I've got to create an avatar with those two running, with the caption: "Stay fit, 'cause you never know.".
That phrase, by the way, is a part of one of several Public Service announcements up here, trying to promote stuff like fitness. The different ones I can remember are a fat kid chasing an elusive Ice Cream truck, a kid chasing a valuable Pokemon card that's been blown away in the wind (neither of those two catch up, but give up, exhausted), and a young boy running away from a hoard of girls, who're chasing him - he gets caught, kissed, and looks disgusted. All the commertials end with the phrase "Stay fit, because you never know", so I immidiately thought of that while watching the movie, and... yeah. I need a life.

Nope. Haven't seen it, and for the exact same reasons as RE said. All I saw in the previews (save for one glorious clip of Steve Buscemi) were explosions, sex (or it led you to believe), and an "action packed" chase scene with cars and some more explosions. That pretty much hindered any want to go out and see it. The girl's name is Scarlett Johanson, if I spelled her last name correctly. She plays Edin's best friend in Ghost World, same movie with Steve Buscemi. Weird, eh?

Well.....one of "todays" big movie-musts is to have plenty of explosions. But I guess the feeling of "over-action" and not enough "talk" is what lays this movie down. Is that what you mean RE?

If I remember correctly (and I might not, so don't quote me on this) but apparantly Steve was quite involved with the making of Ghost World, and when it came to casting Edin's best friend, Steve recommended Scarlett Johanson, since although, at that point, she wasn't well-known, he believed her to be a good actress, and 'Ghost World' was her first big stepping stone to becoming a success. ;D
