From IMDB: One shot of Sulley trying to tell Boo to go to sleep was replaced for the non-English versions of the film. This was because his hand gestures, miming the phrase "You go to sleep", are so closely related to the individual words (for example, holding up two fingers for the word "to") that dubbing the shot into other languages would have proved too difficult.
Foreign language versions of the film feature visual text (ie: newspaper headlines, street signs) written in languages in which the film is dubbed, in order to eliminate the need for subtitles. In addition, universal icons are put in place of English text, such as a pedestrian traffic light that features a multi-fingered hand (in place of "Don't Stalk") and a two-headed beast (instead of "Stalk"). It also appears that in order to minimize the "poorly-dubbed kung-fu movie" syndrome, all the lip synch is completely redone for foreign language releases.

That is the thing with subtitles and such. All about translation. When things are translated, some parts are left out. Such as when a person is talking, some simple words such as "to" would be left out. Even words important to the plot would change. Such as industry would be company or something like that. Yeah I know those two things are different, but in translation, sometimes close enough is enough.

It is probably impossible to translatge perfectly between languages. And if my math is right, I am now 3/4 the way out of being Randall's skivvy :-)

Hey, on the 2nd DVD there's a section that has all the clips of all the languages itwas done in, like French, Spanish, and Italian.

Have to look at that while I am recovering from my imminent cataract surgery.

Yeah, it's great to hear Randall say the Winds of Change in some kind of Brazillian, I think.

BTW, how do I access the languages? I thought I went over all the second disk, but don't remember it.

If you have the same DVD as I have, I can explain. ^^ The 2nd DVD is in two parts, Humans Only and Monsters Only. When you go to Humans Only, you see lots of doors (^^), and you pick ehm... Wait a sec. *puts on DVD* You pick the door which has 'Release' on it, and then you'll see somewhere 'Multi-Language Clip Reel' (the last one). And there you go! ^^

btw, it misses some languages. They say Monsters, inc. is shown in 25 languages, in that reel they show 20 languages or even less. I missed Flemish, so I checked it. ^^
