Why are all the monsters I can think of bilaterally symmetrical? I would think that radial symmetry could make quite a scary monster, especially if around a tall vertical axis. Or even just at random would be scary.

Uhhh....that's not exactly true. Some of those amorphous blob monsters HAVE no symmetry as they can change their body shape to practically anything and a PRIME example of radial symmetry would by Harry Luckey. Since he's really just a circle with spokes sticking out from overhead, he's easily radially symmetrical. In terms of looking at him from the "front", I don't believe he is bilateral as his tentacles are not evenly placed around his body, though I could be wrong, it's been awhile since I've seen it.

You mean how their the same on both sides if you split them in half? Well...sometimes they LOOK symetric, but really aren't. Kinda like how some people's arms are longer on one side plus a monster is basically acestrial to human biology so symmetry is basically similiar.

Well for the most part, he's right though, most of them ARE bilaterraly symmetrical, but not ALL.

Chimera? Though there weren't any featured in the movie.

There we go! ^_^ Thanks ^_^
Well Chimera's have a class of their own, but biologically speaking, monsters derive from basically, most of the time, one gene pool. Take Randall for instance. He is a hybrid of several reptiles. Though few, if any, characteristics of other species.

Right right heh ^_^
What I meant was. For Ran, it's like a chart.
Human - Reptile - Reptile - Reptile - Randall
Of course it's much longer than that ^_^

Randall has the characteristics of the following reptiles:
Head shape-Agamid lizards(NOT chameleons) Tongue-Monitor & Teiid(Tegus)lizards, all snakes Infrared facial "pits"-pythons and some boas(pit viper pits are located behind their nostrils, not on the lower jaw) Teeth-Monitor lizards, though greatly exaggerated. No living reptile has teeth as large, proportionately, as Randall's. Only the Great White Shark can top his choppers! Scales-pythons and boas, minus the broad belly scutes for crawling, which Randall would not need, with eight limbs. Prehensile tail-many snakes, tree-dwelling Monitors, Chameleons, Solomon Island Skinks Scopulae on digits-Arboreal Geckoes Constricting ability-many snakes, including pythons and boas Dark blue/black pigment in his gums and inner mouth-Black Mamba, anyone?
HOWEVER, aside from being warm-blooded, Randall exhibits some unique, non-reptilian characteristics. His color-changing ability FAR excedes any reptile, Chameleons included, and the only animals that can come close are invertebrates-octopi, squids, and cuttlefish. No reptile has just three digits on each hand/foot, either; most of those that have legs have five fingers or toes, just like we do. The three digit thing seems rather Therapod(carnivorous dinosaur)-like. Randall's eyes are certainly unlike any animal's-other than ours. Out of all the characters in this or any other Pixar movie, his eyes were the most HUMAN. Of course, no animal other than humans have as articulated lip structure as his, to allow formation of complex words and sounds.

Randall almost has to have some organic version of phased array optics to pull off his tricks...otherwise he is implausible (as even the filmmaker audio commentary confesses).

Don't forget "boa constrictor" in that scene where he was choking Sullivan!
