Alright... here's a really fun topic that can go on. Let's examine the plotlines of OTHER 'third films' in movie trilogies... and how they could possibly foretell the outcome for the 'Monsters' characters. It may sound, at first, like we're playing a silly, satirical game, but if you think about it, it's a really smart thing to do!
If we look hard enough, it's easy to notice a VERY distinct pattern in all trilogy endings. Usually, in almost every 'Part 3' we can think of, a devastating crisis plunges whatever characters we've been following into a deeper hole than anything encountered in 'Part 1' or 'Part 2', and in many cases, the characters end up on the verge of suddenly losing everything, and the moral fiber of our heroes are put to the ultimate test. In almost all instances, in the midst of the crisis near the climax of the film, there is almost always some deep, dark secret or monumental revelation brought to light in the midst of the chaos, or... some outstanding act of courage, followed by nothing short of a miracle that gets the heroes out of the disaster. It's all part of wrapping up the story... the big finish.
A few examples: At the climax of 'The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King', Samwise Gamgee, after being rejected by Frodo in 'Part One' of the Special Extended Edition, he rescues Frodo from the Tower of Cirith Ungol, then on the slopes of Mount Doom, he says to Frodo "I can't carry it for you... but I can carry you!".
In Spider-Man 3, IGNORING the fact that Harry Osborne gets killed, his butler Bernard informs him that his father, Norman Osborne died by his own hand, which helps Harry realize that his best friend Peter Parker did not kill him, after all. Therefore, he comes to Peter and Mary Jane's aid against Venom and Sandman in the skyscraper showdown at the end of the film.
In 'The Matrix Revolutions', after Trinity's death, Neo has to proceed alone into the heart of Machine City and plug into the Matrix one final time to defeat Agent Smith in an intense kung-fu battle, in the electrifying street showdown sequence under the rainstorm. During a lull in the fight, Agent Smith starts asking the big moral questions that usually occupy a trilogy wrap-up, as usually, the overall theme or message of the trilogy is brought to the surface at this time... or at the very least, clarified.
In 'The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride' (following 'The Lion King 1' and 'The Lion King 1 1/2', which makes it the third film), during a calm moment in the lioness battle, Kiara tells Simba "A wise king once told me: 'We are one'. I didn't understand him then... now, I do.". Kiara's wisdom helps all of the lionesses in the pride (except Zira), as well as Kovu's sister, Vitani, see that fighting is not the way to go. In the end, Kovu, Vitani, and the rest of the lionesses are welcomed back to Pride Rock. To show his approval of Simba's acceptance and forgiveness for all the lions he banished, Mufasa's voice says to him "Well done, my son..... we are one.".
If any of you guys can think of other powerful trilogy endings and what they mean to you, please feel free to share them in this thread!
P.S. My computer responded weirdly when I created this thread, and it accidentally ended up in two of them. I didn't intend for that to happen. Sorry. Can the thread with the smaller number of views be deleted since it's a duplicate?
