What if Randall's invisibility is literally the reason he's so socially awkward? Not only that he's scared of turning invisible for fear of being teased, but what if it's the reason he was sheltered by his guardian(s) growing up? Because Randall was unable to control his invisibility even in MU, he undoubtedly couldn't control it as a baby/toddler/child, and his guardian(s) feared letting him out of his sight because they might lose him! Because they can't see him! So they sheltered him as a child at least to keep an eye on him. I imagine at some point, he was enrolled in school, given that Randy was scared of changing color in front of people. Plus some of his behaviors indicate he had bad experiences with peers maybe. But yeah! This just dawned on me!

We don't know when that ability manifested itself, though. Given how little control he had over it in MU, I would be slightly more inclined to believe that the ability had developed later on in his childhood, rather than at birth, because it seems like the longer he'd been doing that, the more control he would have gained over it. It's really a "which came first, the chicken or the egg" scenario here. We do not know if Randall's blending/color change ability was some latent ability developed as a result of him being bullied, teased, etc. by his peers, or if the teasing and bullying was in response to him doing that, and most likely, the two situations fed each other in a vicious cycle. To be certain he'd always been taught, by SOMEONE, that this blending ability was a bad thing, that it was something to be ashamed of.

Yeah, I totally agree. In fact, I always believed that the catalyst of this happened when he was about 15 years old - a sophomore in high school. Once he turned invisible for the first time, it would have freaked the other high school kids out, and we all know how bullies are. Some bullies would have found a way to use Randall's invisibilty to frame Randall and get him in either detention, or possibly suspension from high school, even though Randall never did anything wrong. They could hide their backpacks in Randall's locker, and then squeal on him, saying that he stole them.
Just imagine how Randall would feel if a hard-nosed teacher bought into the framing and said to him "Come with me, we're going to the Principal's office.", then it's just so easy to imagine Randall groaning helplessly as he tags along behind, knowing better about what's happening than the teachers do, and knowing that the Principal isn't going to believe him, no matter what he says. It's VERY easy to imagine Randall getting framed and bullied ALL THE TIME at high school, because then... Randall would have thought that applying to Monsters University and being accepted to that college would have meant the end of that... forever. Tragically, college turned out to be more of the same thing.
Makes you wanna cry... Randall needs a big, warm hug!
