I don't know about you, but I think that given how old Billy Crystal, John Goodman, and Steve Buscemi are getting, and the many years it has taken for the 'Monsters' franchise to unfold, I think once the story of Randall's redemption is green-lit for a third film, and anticipation for the film's premiere draws nigh, I personally think that Pixar should take it a step further and announce in the hype and newspaper publicity that 'Monsters 3' will be the series finale... at least for Billy Crystal, John Goodman, and Steve Buscemi.
When I started reading newspaper articles surrounding the anticipation of 'THE DARK KNIGHT RISES', Christopher Nolan spelled out in an article that for him, 'The Dark Knight Rises' would be the end of his journey in Gotham City, and he deliberately tied up loose ends to strengthen that 'epic conclusion' feel. Maybe other people will disagree, and I'm not trying to presume how Pixar approaches their film franchises, but I personally can't see a 'Monsters 4' film or beyond... but maybe that's just me. I only see another trilogy.
In addition to bringing Randall Boggs' story arc to a peaceful close, do you think making 'Monsters 3' the series finale would strengthen the audience's reception? In my experience, once the ending of a series is announced, the filmmakers usually go out of their way to make the final installment a spectacular experience, as they usually cull through all those last-minute good ideas, some surprises, and most often, some revelation of epic proportions is put into place to shed new light on the overall series... usually to make it all worthwhile for the devoted fans and audience after years of waiting.
Do you think 'Monsters 3' should be the swan song for the 'Monsters' franchise? Pixar could, of course, do more 'Monsters' short films that would take place after the movie... but I think as far as the big theatrical releases, it should be the end.
