Some believe that with the success of movies such as Tangled, Princess and the Frog, Wreck-it-Ralph, and Frozen, that Disney animation may soon (or already is) reign supreme over Pixar. Some say that Pixar relies too much on sequels and it is criticized for its use of the Cars franchise as a money-grab (which I think is really true, but hey, it'll give the studio more money for other better movies). It's just an opinion, of course, but I can't help but disagree with it (aside from the Cars bit lol).
What do those latest Disney animated films have in common, aside from Wreck-it-Ralph? They're all about princesses. Out of the four, I've admittedly only seen Tangled and Frozen, and though I adore them both, they're not that original...Tangled was based off of a fairy tale, had the archetypal wicked witch character, the princess who ends up with the guy she runs into in the beginning, and even the fake death at the end where we all know Flynn is going to come back somehow. Frozen has a similar art style to Tangled, and it also has the stereotypical "Oh no, she's dead...psych!" ending that Tangled has. I like that it averts some tropes, such as true love's kiss, Anna doesn't end up with the prince (and what happens at the end with him), and that Elsa didn't get a guy (thankfully) but there's only so much you can do with princess movies as far as Disney is concerned, and Frozen was no exception imo. I mean, my brother and I managed to accurately guess what would happen in Frozen before it actually happened--who was the bad guy, who Anna would end up with, that Anna would have the fake-death scene, and I knew (and hoped) that her love for her sister would save her instead of her love for the guy. I haven't seen Princess and the Frog yet, but being a princess movie it'll undoubtedly have the same formula as the other Disney princess movies (don't get me wrong, it doesn't mean they're not good, js).
I just think Pixar is more creative than Disney animation (mostly from the 2000s onward). They have movies about toys, bugs, monsters, superheros, a princess movie that centers around a mother-daughter relationship where the princess doesn't need a guy and there's no stereotypical villain, fish in an ocean, an old man in a flying house that comes across talking dogs, robots, etc...Even there upcoming movies are fairly diverse and seem imaginative. There's a movie about dinosaurs for people who love them, a movie about the Day of the Dead, a movie about a girl's mind, and then some sequels...just much more of a variety than most modern Disney animated movies. Even Disney's live-action films are typically based off of things like comics, there's an upcoming one based on a true story, then there's Into the Wild which is the typical fairy tale atmosphere...just not as original imo. Like I said, I haven't seen Wreck-it-Ralph yet, and it seems like an exception in fact.
