*CONTAINS SMALL SPOILERS*
Okay, I just saw MU for myself today. Overall I don't understand the hate towards Randall, he was portrayed nicely throughout 98% of he movie. I actually thought he got a little mean near the end, but they had to tie his character with the first movie somehow and I think it was handled pretty realistically but not enough for people to hate him, haters gonna hate I guess. I also think he had a fair amount of screen time, mostly in the beginning but he pops in and out frequently throughout the rest of the movie, still wish he had more but for me it didn't feel like it was TOO little.
I also didn't care for how they handled the relationship between him and Mike though. I mean through the first quarter of the movie, Randy and Mike were literally two peas in a pot and when Randy first joined RoR he was trying really hard to be cool about it with Mike as if to let Mike know "Hey, we're still friends", he was definitely not being a jerk like the posts on Tumblr suggest and then what I didn't get was how Mike and Randall don't talk to each other for the rest of the movie after that. I just thought it was weird how Pixar had Mike and Randy's friendship going and then suddenly just dropped it. And surprisingly I actually loved Randy's last line in the movie, it gave some explanation as to why he hated Sully. But it still leaves the question as to what happened between him and Mike out in the open, because they were pretty good friends in this movie and to go from that to flat out hating each other in MI, I just wished there was a little more explanation there.
The scare games were my favorite part and I'm glad they took up over half the the movie and it also got REAL intense near the end after the scare games when Mike...does something, it was kinda awesome.
So overall the movie was great, I think Randy's character was handled very well while keeping it realistic and connected with the first movie. It still makes me sad though and they better either give him a short film or hurry up and make the sequel. I think if they were to make a sequel, they could really go into that complicated relationship between Mike and Randall, because according to MU he really only hated Sully.

I guess that the hate between him and Mike developed later primarily due to Mike's association with Sulley. It IS odd that they never really address how MIKE felt about Randall after he joined ROR, though. Randall's facial expressions and the way he keeps trying to subtly let Mike know that there's no hard feelings on his part is as obvious to me as outright spoken words, but it seems that in this day and age of electronic communication, where people can't even SEE each other, a lot of people are unfortunately, and disturbingly, losing that ability to "read" body language and facial expressions in others, and that's a really scary thought when you stop and think about it. Mike, though, just simply seems to "write off" Randall as though he no longer existed. He does not seem hurt, or angry, or have any feelings one way or another that Randall is now in ROR. He does not even react when Randall more or less pleads with him, "don't blow this for me, Mike; I finally have a chance to get in good with the cool kids". Mike is so obsessed with getting in the Scare Games and winning and getting back into the Scare Program, an unrealistic goal from the start, that it's like from that moment on, Randall no longer exists and never did. When they meet up later at MI, now as direct rivals, Mike has simply forgotten that this was once his pal, his study partner who helped him get all those "A's" on tests, and now he's just someone to be beaten and defeated. Randall is just an obstacle to that Mike's goal of being the best, not for recognition, not for acceptance(he's already got plenty of that) but just to WIN. Everyone has always assumed that Randall wanted the same thing, that he just wanted to win and beat THEM, but for him, it's really about saving face, about keeping a promise he made to HIMSELF, one last-ditch effort to salvage what pitiful scraps are left of his real Ego(I'm using the true Psychological term, not the popular misconception of what that word means), and finally earn what has always eluded him-a sense of belonging and being accepted. For someone who already has those things, as Mike does, it's very difficult and probably impossible in Mike's case, to see or comprehend that.

*SPOILER* *SPOILER* *SPOILER* *SPOILER* I just thought of something! When Mike and Sully were in the human world and the door was deactivated, it turned back on when Sully made all those humans scream, even though they were still on the human side. So does this mean all Randall has to do to get back form the human world is make a human scream, thus activating a door? Randall being able to return may be easier than we thought.

The "good" thing about the recent Randall hate is that, movie-wise, things are definitely on Randall's side. All of the things that people are using to justify the hate can be refuted pretty easily by the movie. People say that Randall abandoned Mike...well, Randall was already in ROR at that point! Mike basically wanted Randall to give up his own dream so he could live his, and I don't think many people would make a sacrifice like that. Plus, Randall wasn't at all mean to Mike when he turned down the offer. People say that Randall was "in" with ROR...if they pay just a bit more attention, they could see how out-of-place he is and how poorly the others in ROR treat him. And it should be pretty obvious when Johnny offers Sully the jacket that Randall has been kicked out. I'm hoping that more people will pick up on these things when they re-watch the movie, especially when it's released on video; these "subtleties" really aren't that subtle, but maybe some viewers missed out on them in the excitement of watching the movie for the first time.
PBL, you're doing good work with your replies to the haters. Again, these "subtleties" aren't really subtle, and so your replies just might prompt them to be a bit more attentive next time they watch the movie. I saw one person even thanked you and said that they'll watch him more closely next time; I think Randall will really grow on a lot of people as time goes on. Fortunately, I've also seen plenty of people on tumblr who felt that Randall's story was sad, and that he did not simply "become a jerk". That's a good sign.

Thats why I said on another thread that Pixar are the ones that made the movie, so they know the truth. The haters can believe whatever they want, the people who CREATED Randall know how it really happened, they are the ones that gave Randall all that strong body language and hints that he is not just a jerk and thats awesome. Which is why we should not let the hate from people who don't even see the full picture bring us down. Pixar did good with Randall and I hope MU is just the start. I'm excited! I hope Pixar sees all this hate, because they will more than likely be all "Okay we didn't make it clear enough in MU so now we have to take it up a notch."

the only time i thought Randall looked a bit 'mean' or at all malicious was
*SPOILER*
when he dropped the fluffy animals all over OK
*spoiler*
but don't take my word for i watched it in such bad quality i might not have seen his face properly.
then again that part in mi where he twists mikes arms i always sort of cringe at because i think ' geez randall that's a bit mean calm it down a bit'. even as a kid when i was totally in love with him i thought he was being a bit cruel there.
that's not to say i didn't like him in that part i love him in any part tbh bad or good i just enjoy seeing him in the movie.
can we also just apreciate how cool it was when
*SPOILER*
he crawled into the lamp shade to hide. i just really loved that bit

It's also good to see all these people who are like "Hey, we wanted to see more Randall. He's cool. But seriously, *SPOILER* one lost game *SPOILER* and he hates Sulley for life? It can't be just that!"Why is it good? Because this puts Pixar in a precarious situation. Either they have to show other reasons why he'd hate Sulley and Mike, and thus risk alienating Mike's and Sulley's fans, or they get him back and go the "yeah, they're friends again so lets forget it" way. Also, the inadequate amount of Randall is probably the most cited complaint on MU... That also kinda sends a message!
