Greetings, fellow Randall fans! It's gonna be a long post, so I hope your attention span hasn't been devastated by the internet yet I am the "Czech friend from DA" pitbulllady has been mentioning on Boggs Board lately, and I am thrilled to be joining you today.
I have been a fan of Randall ever since I saw Monsters, Inc. in early 2002, that is, within the first week of its opening in the Czech rep. I have seen the movie three times during its theatrical run here, and will never forget the first screening. Roger Ebert famously said "Kids are not stupid. ... They don't miss a thing, and they have an instinctive contempt for shoddy and shabby work. " He couldn't had been more right. During my first screening of MI, people started laughning at those stupid "rednecks" mistaking a purple monster for a 'gator and beating him. But something happened then: Two toddlers, old enough that they could (barely) speak, but too young to understand all the redneck/cajun puns, and who have until then been happily enjoying the movie, started crying. One of them even said "Why are they hurting him so much?" - and said it with that sad sobbing voice only toddlers can speak with. The adults ceased laughing almost immediately, and there were a few seconds of awkward silence. After the screening, I could hear others discussing why Randall must've been banished or possibly killed when Waternoose "just" went to jail. I haven't seen the same kind of reaction ever since, so I am pretty sure that it must'd been those crying kids who raised the question within the older audience's heads.
But anyway, I have been a fan of both Randall and the Monster universe ever since. I remember playing the computer game just to unlock movie clips prior to the DVD release, watching all the bonuses on the DVDs and even writing some fanfics. I was shy about my English back then, so I never really started socializing with others. No-one but my best friends had known about me being a Randall's fan, and I was comfortable with that. They had their Superman or Batman, and I had my Randall. No big deal, no questions asked.
But many things have changed since then. My English has improved significantly, MU's announcement has reignited my passion for our favorite monster, my friend who used to work for Apple in late 1990s has insisted that Randall's behavior suspiciously resembled that of the late Steve Jobs, and the rise of the social media made me well aware of the true size of Randall's fandom. All of this is what pushed me over the edge and made me "come out of the closet"… I mean yes, I had creeped to the boards from time to time and spent considerable amount of time digging through Randall Fans United and fanfics, but I had always remained just a passive viewer. Until now. And so here I am, saying hello to you.
I do have to confess that I feel somewhat guilty and sorry over not joining the crowd long ago, so I have prepared a small present for all existing and prospective Randall fans out there to make it up.
Since I expect MU to bring us many more fans, I have started a website that aims to be the next Randall Fans United. Those of you who know what RFU was definitely understand that matching it is by no means an easy task. And so I turn to you for help and collaboration. I am looking for some determined staff members who would be willing to help me run it - as well as for the content to post. And so, I encourage you to visit the site, which is still a work in progress, to get an idea about what it will be like.
Oh, and the website address? Simple: randallboggs.com ENJOY!
