"So Randall, we studying chapter 7 tonight?" Mike asked as the two monsters made their way to the frat houses.
Randall stuffed his lower hands in his pockets, adjusting his glasses with his upper ones. "Uhh yeah, sure. Roaring Volume and Pitch right?"
Mike nodded as they walked. It had been nearly the end of their first year at Monsters University, and things had changed. Mike had joined Oozma Kappa, and Randall had gone to Roar Omega Roar.
Actually the news on Randall's part had come as a calm shock to Mike. He had come back to the freshman dorm after being kicked out of the Scare Program, seeing Randall at his desk waving an invitation to ROR's fraternity. The fact that he got his four feet in the door to such a fraternity was just...mind boggling.
What happened later aside, Mike was slightly glad that they were still able to attend classes together. He may be stuck with that thick head Sullivan, but at least Randall was more civil and knew what it took to be a good scarer.
"Rannnndddyyy"
Randall stiffened, as did Mike. Looking ahead, jogging toward them, was Carrie. On reflex, Mike looked around, wondering who she was yelling for. Then she nearly smacked into Randall, coming just shy of doing so, and pointed a digit at him. Mike nearly did a double take.
"C-Carrie!" Randall exclaimed, holding a hand to his left cheek just in case he was blushing.
"There you are...trying to slink by me huh?" Carrie said to him in mocking disapproval.
"Uh no no!" Randall quickly said, waving all hands. "We were uhh...we..." His eyes drifted to Mike, who was still unsure exactly what was going on here. Real quickly, he motioned the lizard monster to lower.
"How do you know the head cheerleader Randall?!" Mike whispered quickly in a hushed tone.
"W-well she's always at the track! And she's well...Johnny's girlfriend and-" Randall began.
"Well boys..." Carrie began, causing said-boys to break and stand straight at attention. She made her way over to Randall, pulling her right arm across his chest, the other going behind him and teasing the tips of his fronds.
"You don't mind if I borrow Randy now do ya?" she seemed to ask Mike without even looking at him.....
Mike watched as Carrie practically lead the enamored lizard monster away, wrapping her arms around one of his. He could see Randall walking awkwardly as if the ground wasn't smooth anymore, always twitching. But he caught something more concerning.
In a short few seconds, Carrie looked back at him with a strange look. It was like one of snooty disapproval mixed with satisfaction. He couldn't pin it down...but if he'd known better...he would have realized she obviously had no like for HIM...and that by leading Randall away, she was doing something to secretly destroy him.
Carrie couldn't care less, it was Johnny's plan of course. Coax Randall into loyalty for ROR, and at the same time, take down that smart-alec eyeball by removing a friend...
===============================================
This was originally a sketch I made a few days ago while in a waiting room. It was just a sketch of Randall and Wazowski as they're seen here (Carrie was basically a blob as I didn't have a reference, she was added later during editing). Having Randall as my wallpaper made him easier to draw hehe.
Anyway...this talk about Carrie and her effect on things got me thinking...
Now, Randall's personal relationships are his own. As a friend, I don't peg into them, it's his own business. With a secondary theory, it's most likely a very sore subject for him, one that hit him hard, so it's a topic I don't bring up for his consideration.
But in terms of movie-thinking...I got a theory down...
Now I had the MU bit theory that Carrie is Johnny's girlfriend. I mean that's Nerds 101...the great jock has the head cheerleader as his gal. Makes sense. Not to mention the ROR fraternity and PNK are close (with JOX between them).
Anyway, I keep with that theory...I also proposed that she's part of Johnny's "strike force" when it comes to handling issues. Whether it's to humiliated somebody that he personally loathes, or to...recruit members.
Now how does this go with Randall? Well think about it. He's a shy, geeky kid who doesn't expect a gal to be interested in him.
But, whatever Johnny wants from Randall or use him for, his relationship to Wazowski would have some effect on things. As Randall is probably a friend, he's also very smart and has the talent to be a scarer. Johnny sees this. Now, Randall's a geek...but turning a geek into a jock seems like an interesting challenge, and Johnny may aim to do this.
But what makes this sweeter? Removing a friend from Wazowski.
So my theory is that Johnny uses Carrie to bring Randall more over to the "Jock Side". After all, come on...when haven't we seen a geek get all twitchy and nervous when a good looking gal comes on to them? Seriously.
Anyway, it's this exploitation that's used to start breaking the possible friendship up.
It's SORT of like a love triangle, but not so. Wazowski has no interest in Carrie, and Randall's just enamored with the attention. Carrie's goal is to get Randall more involved with ROR using her charm and charisma to manipulate the geek in him. This, in turn, gives ROR more influence over him. Eventually he gets so involved that he ends up forgetting his friendship with the eyeball.
Hopefully that explained that theory.
But there's another one. One that goes with "that thing" that happens that makes Randall anti-social and a bit of a loner. And the scary thing is, it makes sense.
Now it was proposed before that Randall had somebody he liked and they died or something. Well it's close...but lets go less lethal.
What do some men have a hard thing to deal with? Take this geeky shy guy who THOUGHT a girl liked him and thought he had everything and was on top of the world and ruin it with one pull of the carpet.
One word.....dumped.
That's right. What if Carrie, if she does have a one-sided relationship with Randall, ends up dumping him? Sure, she's Johnny's girlfriend, but what if Randall thought (and Carrie insinuated) that she could be his. I mean really...get the degree, get the cup, get the girl. How great would THAT be for a once-geeky person? Like something out of an action movie.
Anyway, yeah, dumped. I mean it's one of the things that can happen in college. You form relationships. Sort of a high school sweetheart sort of thing. Only for Randall, it goes bad.
Maybe he gets kicked out of ROR and Carrie dumps him, and it just piles on that he loses what he's worked hard to get...and he becomes resentful of it. Not necessarily anybody's fault (....depending on what DID do it)...but regardless it leaves a scar on him. I mean you go out, you take a chance, and when it seems like you've reached Nirvana, you get a good smack to the face. And given Randall's core, as we see he's shy, insecure, and lacks some confidence, it hits him THERE and he shuts down. He tries to be this jock-like person for Johnny and everyone, but he's still got that good side of him, but when he gets smacked in the face, it kind of switches off.
In effect, Randall acts the way he does when he's older because he doesn't want to get hurt again.
