Is there any canon information on RG's childhood (in the books or whatever)? Is there any accepted fanon in the fanfics?

Well, most fans agree that Randall didn't have the most pleasant of childhoods, but this has been interpreted in many different ways. Some think his parents passed away, and others think that they just disappeared, for example. There is not much hard evidence on anything, unfortunately.

There is absolutely NOTHING regarding Randall's childhood, other than a comment by a Pixar animator on the Extras section of the DVD that Randall "must have been a real jerk in high school". Well, people aren't born "jerks"; they get that way or act that way for a reason, and I've yet to meet any person, myself including, who HASN'T been, or can't still be, a "real jerk" at times!
I work with children on a daily basis as my job, and many of the kids I teach come from backgrounds that include physical and sexual abuse, foster homes, abandonment, drug use, gangs, etc. Randall's behavior fits a classic profile for someone who has grown up being shuffled from one foster home to the next, learning not to form friendships or attachments, knowing that any relationship is going to be short-lived. There is CONSIDERABLE evidence in the movie that whatever family he once had, is no longer around, either because they're dead, or have abandoned him and could care less. There is simply no way that a person's family is going to sit by after their loved one has disappeared at work, and let the last person he was seen with be made CEO of that company, without creating a major "stink" over it, yet we see no evidence that anyone has even noticed that Randall has gone missing! No one can be that thoroughly hated, no matter how they act; SOMEONE somewhere still loves them, unless all those Someones have died.

Well, I consider Randall's childhood as a really bad one with neglect and other stuff. Maybe all his family members are dead, but maybe there could be one living relative who is just maybe looking for Randall. *shrugs* It can happen.

And after Randall is banished, there are no scenes in the film showing any surviving members of Randall's family coming into Monsters, Inc. and questioning his whereabouts.

"Oh puh-lease..." Come on Ran, sh...he's new. "Alright alright..." Not like many people new here has seen your Past Stories. "Right right" The key word here that tmazanec1 used in his original post is "CANON". That means that which is accepted as official, which is seen in the movie, or in any follow-up games, commercials, books, activity books, sticker books, short films, commentaries, etc. that were released by either DISNEY or PIXAR. Fanfiction and fanart, no matter how devoted, does NOT count as "canon". Tmazanec1 was asking if either Disney or Pixar had produced anything that stated outright what the deal was with Randall's family or his past, and they haven't. pitbulllady

I agree with PitbulLady. That sounds just about right. Poor Randall.

Please forgive my quibble, Pitbullady, but this is an itch for me. You used the phrase "could care less". The proper phrase is "COULDN'T care less". If you could care less, than you have some degree of caring that could be reduced.
