Any lizards actually have prehensile tails?

Yes, many species of arboreal lizards have prehensile tails, including all of the chameleons. Solomon Island Giant Skinks, and several species of arboreal monitors, are known for their prehensile tails. Several species of lizards also use their tails as a weapon, too, as Randall does very effectively, and those include most monitors and tegus, as well as iguanas. Many, many snakes have prehensile tails, especially those that climb. If it weren't for his size and weight, Randall would be well-adapted to living in the trees.

ANOLE!!! He was an Anole. (Ah-NO-lee) Anoles are very, very common here where I live. They don't have prehensile tails, though. They can use their tails to balance with, but they can't wrap them around anything to hold onto it or grip it, and can't manipulate anything with it. They're in the Iguana family(in spite of their size)and none of that family has a prehensile tail. Anole's tails are designed to break off easily, and besides balancing, serve primarily as a distracting feature for predators, since they not only break off, but continue to twitch and writhe for several minutes, occupying the predator's attention while the lizard runs away. They can regenerate their tails, but lizards with prehensile tails cannot regenerate a tail that gets chopped or torn off. That would be just like losing a leg for them, since their tails are no more designed to be removed than an arm or leg would, and if they didn't bleed to death as an immediate result, or die of infection, they'd be at a serious and permanent handicap and their survival in the wild would be severely compromised. pitbulllady
