C'mon, people, let's talk. *thundercrack boom*
Okay, so you're a Randall fan. We all are. But what do you say when someone asks you why? Seriously, no matter how young you are, you can't get around adoring a Disney character without someone eventually looking at you like you've got a case of furry gout when you mention it. The older you get the worse it becomes, in my experience. ("Dude, you---like a Disney guy?" *pause* "AHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA!")
So, what do you say? I'm asking for pointers, here. If you go into a monologue about his good traits and how he was misaligned, you know perfectly well that whether or not they smile and nod they're not going to be convinced unless you're very, very lucky. And simply saying 'I just like him, that's all,' seems too small a reply for such a great character. Where's the middle ground?
Anyone have a tried-and-true method?

Alright, time for the monitor to get to work! *crackes knuckles* Ow.
Well....
There are a high percentage of people who are ignorant and do not understand that something that seems "childish" is actually something much much more.
Randall is a monster, yes. But he IS also human.
But he's also mysterious. You can't help but wonder about what he's been through or is going through. There's this deeper personality that is only scratched by the sufrace in the "movie".
Look at it this way. Steve Buscemi, Steve Jobs, and those making M.I..... At least some DID like Randall. They probably still do because their fighting for him and the other Pixar characters in the heated battle between Eniser's "so-called-better" CGI.
It doesn't matter what those who don't know the truth say. There's always a person not agreeing with you or making fun of your liking of something. But brush it off.
Hey.... "You can't judge a book by it's cover, and I'm one to read it".
Hows that? ^_^

Hmm...that's a toughie, because -- at least from my experience -- it's hard to tell how people will react, especially once you start explaining to them all the logic behind Randall not being "evil"/the real "bad guy" in M.I. The thing is, you're always going to have people who'll respond with, "Dude, it's just a movie/cartoon," and say you're just looking way too much into it. I've only had one close friend whom I was able to convince about our claims, and I've had a couple other friends who respected my affinity for Randall, but didn't necessarily buy into my reasoning for it. The best advice I can offer is that, whenever you're asked about why you like Randall, you respond with something like what Sean suggested. If they then seem honestly interested in further elaboration, you can start off with the most obvious bits of logic (like the fact that Randall was only on-screen for 20 minutes of the movie; that we only saw whatever Mike or Sulley saw of him [except for one brief scene]; and that 98% of the movie takes place over only TWO DAYS, which thus makes it kinda hard to judge him as a person). Then you can get into the deeper stuff, if whoever you're speaking with is still receptive. But, yeah...*shrugs* It's still a coin toss, whether they'll end up agreeing with you or not. Hope that helps. ~Light Rises

Whenever I get to talking about M.I. with anyone, they are generally not surprised to hear that Randall is my favorite character, since I tend to love *all* the characters who are portrayed as somehow villainous but who I see as misunderstood, and can see the good in....
If someone ever gets confused about why I like these characters, I try to explain just where I see the good sides of them, and how complex & mysterious they are, and what they must go through. It can get frustrating because I wonder why others can't see it the way I do, and there is often so much to say.
The other thing is, people will wonder just WHY I obsess over movie/tv/book characters like nothing else. That's a tough one to explain...I just...do. I love the fantasy worlds that are created for the characters, how they parallel reality and yet are so different.
Yes, I know some people will call us a furry (those who know what they are, anyway), but I personally don't see what's wrong with that! ;D

Many of the people who know me personally, like my family for example, know I love reptiles and have always championed them as underdogs insofar as "popular" animals go. They assume that is the reason I really like Randall so much. I really don't get asked why I like Randall per se, so often as I hear, "Why would an ADULT like animated characters so much, when they aren't even real?" I explain that live-action characters aren't real, either, in most cases, and yet no one seems to have a problem with someone being a fan of say, Luke Skywalker or James Bond. It takes all the steps to bring an animated character to "life" as it does a live-action one, plus one more-the animation itself, so in that respect they are more complex. When I DO get asked why I would like Randall, with him being a "villain", I tell them about my past experiences, and oddly enough, many can relate to this-you can see something start to "click on" in their minds, since many who are adults have been through some rough times themselves or know people who have. The only ones who just don't "get it" are those who are still convinced that animation is for little kids only and refuse to be changed on this.

My pretty much spiritually adopted big brother is a beginning cartoonist, and no one ever seems to understand how much true hard work goes into making a 'simple' comic or cartoon. (He could write volumes on that alone, whew.) My reply tends to be short, but something along the lines of "Well, to be honest, it's an art. People don't consider animation an art, but it is---people put their lives into these characters, to make them move right and to make them feel real, and part of that is really exploring their character's mind. I like seeing what they see." Or I just shrug and tell 'em I was sick as a kid, but I'm seeing a therapist now so don't worry. XD

I think some people just tend to have gaps in their lives when they feel a little empty...they need something to relate to, something to rely one, something to discuss deeply and emotionally.... so they fill it with an character. Some people are just obsessive. Not that it's a bad thing. It is just a quality that some people have and others don't. Often yes, people do not understand obsessions, but this is not because they are 'ignorant', or shallow or blind or stupid or ANY of these things, its just because THEY are not obsessed themselves, and you can't expect someone to know about something they have never experienced. Its like trying to explain to someone that you've seena ghost and them not believing you. And yeah, the reason people often scorn is because they do not understand. We now live in a society where we mock the things we often do not properly understand or are unable to emphasise with. I, myself scorned when I first heard of this. (one of my friends is a big Randall fan) But I think you've just got to try and keep an open mind and understand that everyone is different, and respect it. Most don't, but thats just how the world is, sadly.
N.B - Sorry if the word obsession was to strong a word.

No, I think you are 100% right, deadly_nightshade. I'm certainly one of those 'obsessed' people, & I understand why some other people are not similar to me in that way. As long as they accept how I am (while I can't expect them to understand it), we're cool.

That's a good point, DN, a very good one; thankee.
Sometimes it is obsession and sometimes it's a hobby. Both can be good, and both can be bad if you go too far.
But then, almost everything's like that. Moderation in all.
