Or, as it makes more sense to me and fans of the animated series, Avatar: the Last Airbender. I just came back from the midnight premiere and felt...disappointment. I don't know if any of you plan on seeing this, so I don't want to post any "spoilers", but I DO want to rave and rant about it. It was just painful to watch, seeing as how this movie was supposed to be based off a cartoon series that was amazing, insightful, and imaginative, which is a rarity in today's children's cartoons. I'm usually very critical of film adaptations of books and animated series (usually films tend to follow storylines poorly) and I was also one of those fans who felt just felt very odd with Shyamalan's choice of cast to portray the main characters, as much as I had anticipated the film. Ultimately, I just felt Shyamalan got it all wrong, and the world he created for Avatar resembled very little of the world we saw in the series. Maybe I'm just being unfair because it's not feasible for a live-action adaptation to imitate 100% of the animated series (but being the perfectionist nazi that I am, it should!), but the serie's plot was intricate and its lessons meaningful, and the film just didn't do it justice, I think. What do you guys think, if you've seen it?

I've only watched the show a couple times, but I have friends who love it. I could tell just by the trailers that it missed the mark. Of course, Shyamalan directed it. He's been a joke of the film work since The Village. Why a director of horror and suspense would want to do a adaptation of a youthful cartoon is still beyond me.
Many things are best off not having film adaptations, but I think that Avatar could have been good in the right hands.

I'm a fan of the series, and do plan to see this movie, granted with all the bad reviews I haven't got high hopes.
Honestly though I'm not expecting it to be like the cartoon, different mediums mean there are different things they can get away with (some of the comedy in the cartoon wouldn't work at all for instance since it might be too slap stick).
But I'm hoping there's SOME comedy.
Noah acted a lot like Aang in the INTERVIEWS but you dont see a lot of that in the trailers.
So I'm not all that optimistic really.
And with the reviews, trilogy seems doubtful. And it does literally apparently seem to be like episode 3:17 EIP (East Island Players), where the heroes see a play of their story.
Toph:"That wasn't a good play"
Sokka: "But the effects were decent."
Ah well, Bryke are doing a new series called The Legend of Korra it seems. I'm eagar to see that. But also apprehensive. After all if this movie bombs for me... well Bryke WERE heavily involved from what I hear.
Granted Avatar is another source of inspiration for me and a series I really enjoyed both in canon (for the most part with the odd picks here and there) and still in fandom.
And while I would have been fine with a nordic Northern WT and and Inui (ish)t Southern WT (After all, the fact is people were seperated by their ELEMENTS, not RACE on the show, especially the earth kingdom being incredibly diverse in that department) but as I see in screenshots and trailers, for it to work, it would mean that Katara and Sokka should be mixed race and they're both full Caucasian.
I wasn't even part of the racebending thing either. It just looks a little weird to me. I don't know if I'll be able to believe the idea the fact they're genetically 3/4- Southern WT would be easy... surely they would notice this? If they were actually mixed then... well, they may be forgiven for not realising this. Does the movie ever refer to this?
I don't really care for actor appearances usually, I'm all for ABILITY, but I want it to be believable and realistic that people are related/ could have huge family secrets kept from them/new audience members etc. at least.
Come to think of that their Granny being white at all when everyone else isn't... that would still raise questions... wouldn't it? Unless they already know and isn't a secret at all.
I'm going to give it a chance. But hopes... not exactly high.
