Something keeps coming on my mind, and maybe you guys can help me.
In the Monsters Inc. sticker book, with the picture of Randall, it said something like '...builds a machine which extracts machines, but takes the life of the child.'
In any case, I keep wondering, with Randall, probrably not being sleep-deprived and on the top of his game, why would Randall make the choice of building the S.E.?
... and on another note, what does Waternoose have to gain from all this?

Waternoose would have stood to make a LOT of money from this IF it ever got accepted. He would also have been hailed as a hero who stopped the "Scream Shortage" crisis by coming up with a new and more efficient means to collect Scream energy than having Scarers try to scare kids who no longer were afraid, since the Scream Extractor would force them to scream whether they feared monsters or not. The company's stocks would have gone sky-high, and being the CEO, Waternoose would have been the main beneficiary.
As for Randall, why do you say he was "probably NOT(large type mine)sleep-deprived"? Given that he had to work his regular nine-to-five job, five days a week, that only would have left nights and weekends to work on the Scream Extractor, so there is NO WAY he could have NOT been deprived of sleep!
Randall did NOT make the choice of building the Scream Extractor. Waternoose MADE him build it. Now, I'm sure, given that Randall seems to think he is going to get a bit promotion(as indicated in what he says to Mike)as a result, AND he believes he will be solving the Scream Shortage, so he feels he is justified in building the thing. However, in addition to offering "perks", I have little doubt that Waternoose also put forth threats if Randall REFUSED to build the machine, or told anyone about it. The least of these would have been losing his job, but given how readily Waternoose disposes of even a close friend, and given that he clearly dislikes Randall, the threats probably went way beyond merely firing and "blacklisting" him. Randall may have been proud of the machine, but it wasn't HIS idea, and he had no real say-so in the matter whatsoever. Further more, does anyone believe that IF Randall had completed the machine, tested it, and it was found to be successful, that Waternoose would have actually made good on his promise of a promotion? If so, I have some prime ocean-front property in Nebraska I would like to sell you, and I'll even through in this bridge in Brooklyn for free.

Heh. The scream shortage..... Little they knew it was a cover up so they (NOT Randall) could make the machine...
Waternoose, as Pitbulllady put it, DID force him.
At first, Waternoose tried being lenant, telling Randall what he would gain from building the machine. But yet, Randall didn't want to do something so illegal. In the end, Waternoose played the "fired" card. And since reptilian monsters, heck reptilian scarers are rare (Randall being the only one), are considered manorities, Waternoose could tamper his reputation.
Randall didn't choose. He was forced to.
Poor guy.... He wanted to get his family back too....

All of this makes me think that, let's just say, a different character- Sulley, maybe- was chosen to build the SE. Now, I know Sulley is not capable of building that kind of thing since he doesn't have the knowlege, but let's just say he did and Waternoose asked him to build the machine. Now, of course, if you compare the Sulley before building the machine and during building the machine, there's a big difference- Sulley would be more irritable, less playful, and might not be doing as well with scaring. Then his friends would notice, make their own comments and show their concerns, and might even eventually convince him to tell them why he's being like that. But in Randall's case, unfortunately, this didn't happen- he didn't have any friends that were close enough and that really gave a damn for them to notice any difference. Maybe they were just stupid or maybe they didn't care, but imagine if Randall DID have a few choice friends. The whole film would've been entirely different.

Sully HAD parents....Sully HAD friends....Sully HAD respect....
Randall had NO parents...Randall had NO friends...Randall had NO respect.
Their two different sides. Randall was the victim. His life was a struggle. And Waternoose took advantage of that.

Exactly- that's what I'm saying- If Randall DID have friends and family, they would have protected him from everything that happened.

Yes. He needed someone to talk to in the matter. If he just sat down and talked with his parents or his friends.....
Well actually....if Randall did have parents and friends, there probably wouldn't be nothing to decide? I mena....finding his parents and getting much-needed friends is why he took up the forced decision...

Yes.... Think of that...he knew too much....He could have been killed, or at least his reputation wouldn't get him a job at all....
Then again....Randall knew a small portion, and you all have seen a small portion, of the big picture....

What really annoys me is that the CDA suspected something all along yet refused to actually do anything about Waternoose until they got a confesion.
