Not bad overall. Bit cheesy in parts (but meh, it was a 12A disaster movie according to british ratings, what are you going to do?). In one case it did bring some bad memories of the story of Noah as a child, but overall not a bad movie. Not the best one ever, and I wouldn't watch it again just for the sake of it but if a friend wanted to, then I possibly would.
There is also the fact the whole idea the Mayan's made such a prediction is actually pure and utter BS. It's a very modern invention and more to do with the fact that that is when Mayan's reset their calenders.
But of course you just have to suspend your disbelief for that obviously.
But one realtistic thing they did was that mass suicides occurred before the great disaster. I could see that happening unfortunatly. I hope not though. I want to be actually able to giggle a bit (not in a mean way but just chuckle a bit) when 2013 rolls around and people pretend to have amnesia like they did in 2006.
Anyway.
My favourite character was actually a minor one- a Buddhist monk. His family was also interesting (mother, father and pretty selfish -at first at least he was selfish- brother). Go Buddhist monk + family! Shame we didn't see more of them. The American family we instead followed around in the movie alot were okay... but still not as interesting as them even though we only saw a little of them.
The deaths we see in some cases deserve some recognition though:
SPOILERS!!!:
Most dignified death: The D.Lama, for sure, banging on his bell as the wave went over. Shows some dedication. Didn't show fear. Also the Lama's scene with the monk I liked was good.
Special mention: The American President's death was also pretty dignified but a bit more emotional.
Most unfair death: Well everyone who died really, but particulary one of the Indian scientists which had helped warn them
Most depressing death: Once again, everyone- but particulary when a father wishing to make amends with his son on the phone when it becomes more apparent the world is going to hell but just before the son can say hello...it's too late. Good thing to show how you really HAVE to make amends earlier rather then rely on that feel good/touching last moment- you might not get it. Good for a movie to show.
So anyone else see it?

I'm very much into these kinds of stories in theory. Too often, however, the stories get carried away with other content. Interestingly, I saw a video in my science class today about Sir Isaac Newton, including something I never knew: HE believed, and claimed to have proven, that the world will end in 2060! Though, his proof involved reading the Bible... Anyway, the movie sounds a little interesting. I'll consider watching it sometime.

It... does get a little 'carried away' in some cases I'm afraid. It's mostly a talk about human nature I suposse in some ways- what terrible and good things people can do in such life-or-death situations, governments included. Particulary when just about disaster hits- heads of state have to decide whether they will risk their OWN safety by opening the gates on the ship they are on to people they've aready denied access, at risk of their OWN lives, in order to save some others.
Some bits got some laughs but there weren't many of them to be honest. Plus, as mentioned, over here it was 12A (Actually FINE therefore with kids under 12... as long as they had an adult), hence it wasn't grotesque. Didn't show drownings really. Or see children dying- but you know they do of course.
Some bits WERE cheesy. Honestly, I did like the birth father of the american family I suposse- but some bits which he had with the step father and his ex-wife? Oh god the cheese. Still endearing in it's own way though I guess. But the Buddhist family were WAY more interesting to me- particulary the monk, the D.Lama and American President were more... impressive, I suppose you could say- the Lama showed dignity, as did the President, though his death was more touching I guess you could say.
There are quite a few characters which are... interconnected. The main stories are by this geologist who works for the American government (who is friends with the Indian scientist who first dscovers it along with speaking to other scientists throughout the world; as well as the American family (technically, a mum, step dad, boy and girl plus the birth father of the kids). But they are connected through other people in the story and to each other. Sometimes you wonder- WHY did thre Lama/Pope not get a 'ticket' to the ships? But I think maybe they did and decided to stay behind to die with the people left behind like the Italian and American President did, though it wasn't outright stated.
Probably.
I'm not about to say it was perfect or that anyone should definitly see it- but if you can spare the cash, time etc.,it's worth a look.

I thought it was quite a great movie, since I enjoyed the Day After Tomorrow very much, and that it was by the same makers. Went with my best friend to see this, for the first time only the two of us, and she really enjoyed it too! Yes, very emotional film and I could feel my heartstrings being pulled in numerous scenes. I was on the edge of my seat in the action sequences! If I had to make a decision like the President of America and Italy, I'd stay behind with my people too. The captain goes down with the ship.
I can see your point mentalguru... with the suicides. You always get the strong willed believers in these things, but I don't believe it. All I can say about the apocalypse is, when it happens, it happens, and there is nothing you can do about it. You live, and then you die. If we're all going to die, then we'll die together united. I just prefer not to look to the apocalypse, but hey, I enjoy the reading and seeing the media that it carries.

Of course, when you make that analogy, American liberals are working hard to legalize abortion. But I won't delve into politics, here. I'm not religious, but I DO agree that it's really weird, to me, that the end of the Mayan calendar (which repeats, mind you) means anything. The only reason people can possibly believe it is because it's not 2012, yet. Then again, people feared the same about 2000, and all that happened, then, was the Y2K computer bug.

Well the world WILL end eventually. Someday. But if we're talking JUST humans here, the planet will go on in some way long after all humans are gone anyway. We're not the end of evolution anyway and not necessary for this planets survival or continutation when we're talking about the sum total. Of course due to our social interactions, evolution so to speak within our species is stranger than a lot of other species. While caring for others does happen in animals we take it to higher levels while being aware sometimes why we even probably do them might be just a symptom of past rewards. The 'rewards' might not exist as they did then, but we still do them even knowing this to be true. Humans are not the end point though on earth or perhaps will forever be the dominant sentient species. Evolution did not mean we'd inevitably come about either. This makes us lucky. None of us was inevitable, so we're lucky to be alive. Whether we produce some off-shoot in our descendents which will take over or something else brand new does in some other way, eventually humanity will end at some point, THAT'S inevitable. All things do so eventually. . But of course probably (and hopefully) that won't be for a long time! That doesn't mean the end of the planet or even more rediculous the universe if that happens though. We are not the center of it after all. We're lucky to be here though even if in hard times it doesn't seem like that. Just one change in history, one different decision or difference and... well we might not even be born. Kind of makes you think.
But it is apparently the general consensus that one day this planet will be swallowed by the sun.
That won't be for billions of years though.
Eh the end will be some day.
But it's probably not tomorrow or in 2012 for that matter.
I just as I stated, REALLY hope people don't waste their glorious chance by panicing on 2012 and committing suicides like in this movie as stated. But I''ve unfortunatly got a feeling people many will.

Ever heard of "the final countdown"'s story? It's very interesting. The world thought Kennidy (was it him?) would start a atomic war or whatever, and they thought they where going to die. I'm not uptodate with the story cuz my father told us that about 3 months ago.

-Shrugs- I never saw that, but just because a meteor hits doesn't mean the end of the planet really. End of US maybe and even many species but not the planet.
End of humanity does not = end of planet
Heck end of ALL species doesn't really mean end of planet. If it's still a more or less spherical shape orbiting the sun it's still earth.
Actually there's a lot of ways we can die and it would make someone into either someone who took opportunities or a nervous wreck possibly if they brood too much on it.
Yellowstone for instance... dormant volcano, very overdue for an eruption for instance. Could cause something that makes Icelands lrecent ruptures look like someone who had left a kettle for too long on the stove.
But yeah just because WE die or other species do doesn't mean the end of this place entirely. Certainly more... boring among other things. But not completely gone.
Edit: Mmm, no, haven't seen tha 'final countdown' eithert but I did study the cold war a lot at school. It was part of the standard GCSE and history (and Geography) was always popular at our school.

Mind everone else on the board but... THE WORLD IS'INT GOING TO END! WHY THE CRAP WOULD GOD DESTROY WHAT HE CREATED?! IT'S LIKE A MOM KILLING HER KIDS! From what I know and what my dad taught me is that the world WILL end sometime. Could be tomorrow, next week, month, year, decade, century, any time. It's hard to explain, but from my Christian belief, Jesus comes back and brings all His followers with Him in Heaven. I can't explain it all, but the book of Revelations tells all about it; that there will be peace and love and no more sad moments or fears. But that's from my belief.
