I wasn't quite sure where to put this, and I'm sure that some of you won't be interested in this crazy scientific stuff, but it DOES have ramifications with regards to the Monster World, the Human World(or rather, A Human World-there could be an infinite number of such worlds, actually), etc. I just got finished watching a fascinating program on the Science Channel about parallel universes, or "Multiverse Theory", and how more and more scientists, especially Physicists and Cosmologists, are coming to accept this as a viable science in and of itself. Of course, the whole basic concept of the movie, Monsters, Inc., relied upon the notion that at least one other parallel universe exists besides ours, and that the sentient/sapient residents of that universe, the monsters, originally came from OUR universe, and have discovered how to manipulate portals, or "worm-holes" between their universe and ours.
Of course, this isn't anything new. Lewis Carroll explored that concept of parallel worlds, similar, and yet different to ours, in his children's books written in the 1800's. Albert Einstein was trying to develop one theory to explain everything in the universe when he was struck with the notion of the impossibility of that particular task, due to the fact that there IS no one universe, but many.
After watching this, I did a bit of 'net research and found some pages that sum up what was covered, so rather than posting all the stuff from the program here, I will simply post a link at the end, but there's real and valid support for the concept of a "Multiverse" composed of an infinite number of universes, which can collide or bump into each other at random moments, allowing the transfer of energy and matter, including possibly civilized beings, between them. OR, perhaps some of the civilized beings in one universe have gained control over contact with and access to another universe. As one physicist interviewed, Dr. Michio Kaku of the University of New York stated, "If there is an infinite number of universes, then there has to be an infinite number of civilizations". It was emphasized throughout that in some of the universes that were closest to each other, the differences could be as slight as Elvis not having died yet, or much greater, as in Hitler having won the war. In others, the dominant civilization might not even be humans, yet everything else would be the same was what we know(sound familiar?). In others, more distant, there might be profound differences in the way that the laws of physics and biology manifest themselves. Again, that last statement recalls the fruit eaten by the Mons when they first arrived in that particular universe, which allowed their bodies not to digest(and therefore destroy)the DNA of the things they ate, but to actually incorporate that DNA into their own to some extent, something that cannot happen here in OUR universe. It's very complex stuff, very deep, but very intriguing and it actually does give some credence-a lot, actually-to the concept of other beings and other civilizations existing right alongside ours, stuff previous thought of as mere fiction or the stuff of myth and legend. Those of you who have been around for a long time, since the original Bogg's Board, will recall that we even had a member get angry and leave due to MY argument that there very well could be parallel universes and that movement of matter(of which all living things are made, obviously)between them was not only possible, but probably happening daily, under our very noses. This person argued that it simply could not be possible because the only portal she/he knew of between universes was a Black Hole, and matter would be destroyed going into it.
Anyway, here's a link(yeah, I know it's Wikipedia, but it DOES support what was covered on the program and breaks it down a bit further) that goes into the details of "String Theory", "Membrane Theory(or "M-Theory"), and "Multiverse Theory". It really is fascinating to think that somewhere, literally right next door cosmologically speaking, there really IS a Monster World where Randall and the others are as real as we are, or a version of the Human World where the thoughts of children's imagination become real, flesh-and-blood beings.
