One thing that bugged me about Russell is when he used "Ellie" as a way to keep Kevin. Funny yeah...but realistically it's kinda cruel. Russell didn't KNOW who Ellie was, yet used her to get one over Carl.
And Dug, despite being funny, is just...TOO different from Muntz's other dogs. I mean come on. He's what? A retriever? Goldern retriever? While the rest of the dogs are literally darker. I mean it's a simple question of appearence again. Dug? Cute and bright. The rest? Dangerous-LOOKING...and dark.
To be fair though Muntz got allot more lee-way than Randall as I've said before.
Overall I enjoyed the film though. But some things were wrong with the above of course on a deeper level. And I have to admit...you'd think a one-badge-away-from-complete-scout would be a bit more useful.

Yeah, Dug is supposed to be a Golden Retriever, a breed that is supposed to be "nice", as compared with the "mean" breeds like Dobermans, Rotts, etc. It really makes no sense that if Muntz had all these dogs to help find that bird, WHY the heck did he have working and non-sporting breeds and terriers, and the only "bird dog" he had was Dug? If I was looking for some elusive bird, it sure wouldn't be with Dobermans and Rottweilers; I'd have a pack of English Pointers or Setters or German Shorthairs, breeds specially bred to find BIRDS. Again, though, Docter has to rely in that negative image vs. positive image of certain breeds in the popular media, just as he relies on the "furry=GOOD, scaly=BAD" stereotyping in M.I. pitbulllady

And what's more, it seems the opposite of what they did with Randall here. There are TONS of Dobermans and Rottweilers and just ONE "good" Golden Retriever?
Granted, Muntz actually have many MORE dogs, as he, in honesty, regrets that he "lost so many dogs" where Kevin was.

No, there was just ONE "good dog"...and it happened to be a Golden Retriever, since that breed is perceived as "harmless" and "good", while Dobermans, Rottweilers, Pit Bulls are supposed to be "bad". If Dug had been one of those breeds, people would not have "bought" into him being a nice dog, would they? Docter therefore felt compelled to make him different from the "bad" breeds like Alpha so we'd know he was "good" all along. The point was not that there was only one "good" Golden Retriever, but rather, that the Golden Retriever was the only "good" breed in the movie. Again, if Dug had been a Pit Bull, or a Dobe, or if all the other dogs had also been Golden Retrievers, or if all of them had been just generic, "breedless" dogs or of some made-up, fictional breed, it would not have been so bad. In a way, though, I guess I can see that "analogy of opposites" with Randall; Dug was the only "good" dog, and he was a Golden Retriever, while Randall was the only "evil" monster, and he was scaly and reptilian. It still relies on stereotypes. pitbulllady

I saw it. I think that Up was pretty good, during the time I watched it, I was sort of emotional [mood swing] and I cried when the music was playing and stuff.
and wow, it's only now I realized that a LOT of Pixar films use stereotyping. ): I feel dissapointed.

Stereotyping is very common within all films but yes, Pixar does use some stereotyping. A good example is with changing Violet from being emo/grunge to prep...seems that Pixar, like a good number of companies, must believe that if you dress dark and depressed than that means that you must be, I on the other hand dress in a goth/punk/emo style because it's what I choose but that doesn't make me some diseased suicidal freak, now does it? All companies use stereotypes, it happens.

They could've made her eh, 'normal.' The chage was too drastic it's funny D:D
