I enjoyed the Light/L arc better than the later. I mean sure, ok, Mello was alright, but Near was just too much like L that it felt like L didn't matter. I DO recall that in some version, think it's the manga, L cheated death by writing his name in a death note. It was kinda like a "cancel out" thing. Though they DID revive L in a way with L: Change the World, which dictates L's famous crime-solving.

In Death Note: The Last Name he cheated death and trapped Light thus getting Riuk (Sp?) to kill him. L:Change the World is a quasi sequel to show what L does after the events of the 2nd movie.

Well in Change the World, now that I re-looked at it, L wrote his name in the Death Note to make himself immune to a virus, which led to his discovery of Near and taking him to Watari's school.
