Inspired by MentalGuru's fanfic, "Connections", as well as the song, "I'll Stand By You", written by Chrissie Hynde and recorded by The Pretenders, a song which has long summed up my own feelings for Randall, one I'd think would be echoed in the fanfic later on.
In case any of you haven't been following this discussion:
boggsboard.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=randall&action=display&thread=1308 ; it's about a particular fanfic, "Connections", written by MentalGuru, here:
www.fanfiction.net/s/3558799/1/Connections .
The fanfic takes place some 15 after the events of movie, in the Human World, mostly, in which a now-17-year-old Mary, aka, "Boo", has been reunited with her old foe, under some unusual circumstances. Mary now works with an organization which is dedicated to helping monsters who are stuck in the Human World, either through legal banishment, or illegal...or who just plain got lost, sort of a modern-day version of the "Underground Railroad" who helped runaway slaves escape to the North before the US Civil War. Mary moved away from her original home(the one where she lived when the movie took place) when she was four, and has no real memory or Sulley, Mike or Randall...but Randall does remember HER, and knows who she is. After she finds him and helps him recover, following a gun-shot injury, he begins to finally think of her as a friend, perhaps more...and he begins to feel overwhelmed with guilt after all these years, because of what he put her through, and because IF he'd defeated Sulley and Mike, Boo, the one person who means so much to him now, might have died. In this particular scene, on top of the Manhatten apartment building where Mary and her parents live, overlooking Times Square, she tries to reassure a guilt-ridden and battle-scarred Randall, to let him know that everything will be alright, as Randall tries to gather the courage to tell her the truth about who he is, and how their lives first became intertwined, figuring that once she learns the truth, and her memory of those events is sparked, she'll hate him as much as she did when he was thrown into her world in the first place, 15 years ago.
I haven't decided whether to put this up on Deviantart or not, since most of the viewers there won't be familiar with the story. I tried to depict Mary as she is depicted in the fanfic, an athletic young woman, without making her look TOO old, while at the same time keeping some of her facial features seen in the movie, like her eyebrows or her turned-up nose, and I tried to make Randall look 15 years older, too, adding in more scars. He actually had several scars in the movie, though.
Enjoy!
