How the heck do you get the clips to make mvs?

My M.I. DVD is copy protected etc., so I don't know if this will affect it or not... But how do you get a DVD/movie into your COMPUTER files, and how do you splice the clips you want? (I have Windows Vista on this new laptop)

Aggggh. Not to mention how do you splice music parts? I have some ideas for MVs, but will only work if I use PART of the song. (Since some of the content is not appropriate for the message I want to convey)

For instance, for the last minute or so of 'Carnival of Rust' by Poets of the Fall, would be a good one, in terms of beat etc. for me to use in order to show the similarities between Randall, Sulley and Boo but the REST of the song has romantic parts so I don't want them, besides I only want to do a short one. I know what clips I want to use and the order and EVERYTHING but no idea how to get them, not to mention how to make sure I only use the part of the song I want. (From CDs). All the guides tell you is what to do with effects and whatnot- they tell you NOTHING about how to split clips, or music or whatever.
Another example is that I want to use the song 'Monster' by Dia and Meg- but since the content of most of the song is inappropriate also for the message I wish to convey (basically how monsters view human kids and by extension Boo), I only want to use the FIRST minute or so of that song. A boo tribute of sorts.

Plus, how do you get characters saying lines from the movie on it without overriding the music? I want to also at some point do a Waternoose video maybe- mostly about what he does to people (Sulley and Randall in particular with some Boo) as well as what Sulley and Randall do to eachother by using the song. "Breathe: I will be the death of you"- If I can get the song anyway. But I want to have Waternoose SPEAKING as well, more or less when he insults Randall, when he tells Sulley he'll get rid of anyone who gets in his way, not to mention Sulley saying he was like a father to him.

In fact I kind of would like the same thing in the Boo tribute- Waternoose's line about Human's being toxic and deadly, not to mention Mike talking about Sulley ignoring him since 'the kid' turned up and calling her 'That thing'. Plus how do you get the audio on its own? Like with Mike calling her 'That thing' I want a shot of BOO close up at the same time, rather than the scene where he wants to throw her through a random door.

If anyone could help with this or knows of somewhere I could find out I'd be most grateful!

As much as I hate to say it, you're going to have to rip the contents of the DVD, like I do. Seeing as you want the music from the movie without the same dialog, your best bet is probably to purchase the soundtrack as well; you can't separate the dialog from the music, as far as I know.

Aside from the legal issues (but I'm pretty sure this is fine so long as you're not selling the clips or doing anything else aside from personal use), ripping can actually do most of the things you want. The copy-protected files are .VOB files, which are basically the DVD version of package files (i.e. .sit, .zip, etc.). Thus, you can do something called "demultiplexing", which is the separation of the audio files with the video files. The tricky part after this, however, would be converting the files to a readable format; audio is in ac3 format, and video is in another format unreadable by many applications.

As for the legal issues, you'd be surprised how many people rip DVD's on YouTube. I use it for my M.I. videos, and, according to a thread on Pixar Planet, so does FONY. On top of that, I haven't received ANY copyright issues concerning the visuals, though I once have regarding use of Gary Numan's song "Little Invitro".

As for splitting clips already extracted, you should be able to do that with any movie-making application.

Still, might add I plan to try and be 'fancy' with effects if I can, so might take a while... the audio file you sent me is still loading- might have to give it a rest and try again later.

Tool of the trade ;D. Yeah, I use the old Xilisoft DVD Ripper 4... but *ahem* I didn't really pay for it. Everything I rip anyway, it's stuff I've legally bought, but well, YouTube didn't like it anyway and STILL took my channel down after I uploaded a lot of videos, yet I still have with 'copyright protection'.

A random note, I'm in production of a new Randall video, which I'm doing out of enthusiasm for Randall. It's to the song Hallelujah... and not the Alexandre Burke version. A version that is close to the Shrek version by Rufus Wainwright. I love his voice... very emotional in my opinion.

Well, at least you guys got what you need to do amvs and stuff like that, I can't dvd rip to save my life and I tried Limewire but when I had downloaded a copy of MI to try to do vids, it wan't compatbile with what I had on my labtop at all, so much for that!

That's actually a good question, you going to try and sign up for a new Youtube account or are you using a different site DinoGirl?
