and no, it isn't an animal. My engine in my car is officially DEAD-as in caput, finis, over and out. It died on me while I was returning home from buying rats yesterday, full of oil, so no idea what caused it. Now, I have to figure out what to do next. There's no way I can afford a new vehicle, since with my animals, I have to have an SUV. I can't transport 100-lb. dogs or 400 pounds of dog food in a car, and pickups don't provide any protection for cargo. It will cost around $2000.00 to put in an engine from a junker, and that's still taking the risk that it will be damaged or ready to go bottoms-up itself. This has simply not been my last few days, *sigh*. On a positive note, my contract WAS renewed-there has been considerable talk of eliminating teacher positions due to budgetary problems, but fortunately mine has not been one of them, so far at least. Usually the Art, Music and other "special area" teachers are the first to go. pitbulllady Oy vey... -_-; Talk about being stuck between a rock and a hard place, huh? Dang, I wish I could help you out somehow. In any case, it's still very encouraging to hear that you were able to keep your job, and I have a feeling that things are gonna find a way to work out for you (yeah, me, the eternal optimist, lol). ~Light Rises

A rental would be more expensive than buying a new car, especially since I have to haul large heavy things like several 50-lb. bags of dog food, or large dogs, so I would have to rent either a pickup truck, a van or another SUV, which cost way more to rent than a car. I checked into renting a CAR for one day, to drive three hours and back to a reptile show, and the cost for that one trip was around $130.00!
I DO have transportation, though, so I'm not stranded. If I was, I would have to use my next car to hunt for a new job, because they would NOT tolerate me not showing up at work! I am borrowing my dad's Toyota Tundra pickup, which is this HUGE behemoth with a V-8 engine. It sorta feels like I'm in a Sherman tank or something! I have to use the steering wheel and a handle grip to pull myself into the thing, it's so tall. It does handle nicely, though, for such a battleship, and has these awesome air-cushion seats like big commercial tractor-trailer rigs, and a killer stereo, so I might be reluctant to let him have it back! The cargo hold is a pain, though, since it's so big, and I'm just 5'2", I have to use a snake hook to grab things in the back and pull them towards me when I need to take them out, since it's almost impossible for me to reach anything back there. It gets decent gas mileage, for a V-8, but it's also a five-speed manual transmission. Still, it takes almost $50.00 to fill the tank up with gas, with a 24-gallon gas tank! My little SUV got 31 miles-per-gallon, but only held 14 gallons when full, and it was an automatic transmission-no clutch or gears to worry about.

Rentals are stupidly expensive, since I guess you're not only paying for the petrol, but for the company's employee's wages too.
