Yeah, my dad and I are discussing those options. It would be cheaper to rebuild it, but then, if the damage has passed a certain point, also impossible to do so and still get any reliability from it. The $2000.00 IS for the cost of buying and installing a used engine from a junkyard car that has less than 75,000 miles on it. The mechanic has found one with only 40,000 miles on it, but then, when you get an engine from a junker, you don't know if IT might have sustained some damage as well, especially if the car got submerged in water or got hit head-on. You basically have to take the word of the junkyard dealer who's selling the thing. I guess we will have to really talk about it with the mechanic tomorrow, to see what the chances of successfully rebuilding the old engine are, and if that is any cheaper than buying the junked engine. Either way, it won't be cheap, and most of the cost is NOT for parts, but for the labor.

Have you tried getting a cheap engine and fixing it up with new parts? I mean...you could do that if the damage is too much...
Jeez...didn't have this much trouble with my DigiBettle...

Have you tried getting a cheap engine and fixing it up with new parts? I mean...you could do that if the damage is too much... Jeez...didn't have this much trouble with my DigiBettle... The RAV-4 uses a six-cylinder Camry engine-absolutely NOTHING else will fit-and Camry engines are NEVER cheap! This is one of the reasons why the Camry is still one of the most likely cars to be stolen in the US-the thieves sell 'em to "chop shops" for the engines and other parts. You can't just put any engine in a car. The size has to be just right and all the openings and connections have to match up with what's on the car, otherwise it won't work, so it's not like I can get a little cheap Ford Escort engine and drop in there. The Camry engine is even oriented sideways, unlike most engines, which are oriented back-to-front. So, that still leaves me with two options-putting in a used engine from a junker, which will cost around $2000.00, or rebuilding the old one, which will STILL(according to my father, whom I just spoke with on the phone)cost between $1500.00 and 1800.00, mostly in labor in either case. You see, mechanics charge around $45.00 PER HOUR or more, so with a time-consumming project like putting in an engine or rebuilding one, that is where most of the expense goes. Now, if only Randall had stuck with THAT instead of insisting on becoming a Scarer...oh, well, you know what they say about hind sight being 20/20. pitbulllady

Well actually....fixing cars is something Randall hasn't thought about before.... Sure....he's tried fixing our cars, but then again there have been very few times he's look at an engine...
Well.....at least I was one who tried to help ya....

Yep, that's what it's looking like. I talked to the mechanic today, and he said that after he'd looked at the two engines available, he didn't like the shape they were in, so he's still on the lookout. He still has not had time to get the old one out of my car yet, to even see if it can be rebuilt. It's funny, that when I was growing up, ALL guys worked on cars-it was a right of passage into manhood if you were a male and lived in the South. Now, only a few specialists do so, and most have no clue. It used to be commonplace to see big block-and-tackles in the backyard for hauling out engines and replacing them, with with all the computerized car stuff and imported cars, working on engines isn't so simple anymore.

Well, the policeman HAS a car, but many big cities still use police horses because a horse can go places a car can't, and people actually seem to behave better, especially in a crowd situation, in the presence of a horse. They have a calming effect on people. Many officers have reported that gang members who were in the midst of a brawl when the horseback officer arrived actually STOPPED fighting to come over and pet the horse, and that many other potentially-violent situations were diffused simply by the horse being there.

I don't think many people are doing it, though. I'm going ice-skating- never tried before- along with some other stuff like DJ where I actually get to use DJ equipment, and tennis and stuff. ;D
