Hey, really Beboots? Same here- I could never be an author full time, but, as you said, as a job on the side, it'd be great. ;D Ooooh, I can't wait to read more of your stories. ;D Well, I have this obscure idea for a futuristic one. It involves large portions of the ice caps melting, leaving most of the world flooded (think world-wide Venice). It's been about one hundred years since the fact and the economy is a sort of depression. About half a century before the story opens, and before the economy began to receed, genetic alterations were "in", meaning that about one in every five to ten people you meet (maybe less - I haven't yet decided how widespread it is) has DNA that isn't entirely human. So, essentially, some people can see in the dark, some can identify everybody who was in a room in the past few days and what they had for breakfast just by sniffing the air, some have feathers instead of hair, etc. My main character is a slightly older woman who's a water-cabbie (essentially, someone who taxies people around in a small boat). Her mother had genetic alterations, but her father was completely normal, so she has a set of gills (as well as a normal set of lungs - think mud-puppies) and webbed fingers (no more, no less - don't want her to be a Mary-Sue), but not anything too drastic. I have a vague idea for a plot, and a lot more character development and back-story than what I just mentioned. I'm thinking of beggining to write it sometime this summer (hopefully I won't loose interest).

Whoa whoa.....your gonna start an original? Well, yeah! See, I like writing quite a bit, and I think that I could do well and perhaps even make a profit (not to mention get lots more people to read my work) if I write and publish a book. You can't really publish fanfiction, although it is great practice. I'd like to be famous for my own characters and situations - perhaps even have someone writing fanfiction about my own characters. Now that'd be awesome. ^_^

Well I....don't know if I agree with that statement.....
In any case. I'm working on an original idea for my Creative Writing class. Ran helped me come up with the idea...

Why do you disagree with my statement? ...And you go to a Creative Writing class? You're so lucky! I have to wait 'till I go to post-secondary: right now I have to make do with mandatory ELA classes.

I....just don't think it in that kinda way....
Well yes. Ran's really helping me pull through it. I mean...I never actually told my stories in front of people.

Our Fanfiction stories being "practice", I just don't agree with that. Your idea's pretty cool, just the way you said that part....

Our Fanfiction stories being "practice", I just don't agree with that. Umm... *butts in* This is all in my humble opinion, so... To me, writing out fanfiction to already existing characters and plots, themes, etc. (hence, the word "fan") is practice when you want to delve into a more realistic level, like coming up with original ideas, characters, the works. Since Beboots has plans on continuing with her writing beyond leisurely means, then to her, "fanfiction" is a warm up of sorts. It's a good warm up at that. Beboots, you're a very talented writer and I do encourage you to put your thoughts into words and see where it all goes from there. If you've got ambitions and goals set in mind, go for 'em. *thumbs up* Sean: What exactly are you required to do in a creative writing class? Besides the obvious, of course... They offered it at my college, but I didn't feel spontanous enough to go for it nor to pay an extra hundred and fifty bucks for it...

I agree- in a sense, for me, fanfiction writing is practice. Also, I write for fun. Your idea sounds great, Beboots- very original. I have an original idea too, but whenever I start writing, it just seems...wrong.

I've found Sci-fi is a brilliant subject to write in, as the boundaries are limitless. You can have you're characters look like anything/go anywhere and excuse all the odd ideas with the fact that it's a futuristic piece. I've had some practise at writing for it because getting into a slight Red Dwarf obsession a couple of years ago I went mad writing fanfics on it. But Red Dwarf is a great example of combining strong storylines with equally strong characters (characters first, characters first!) If you've not already, I suggest you give the Red Dwarf novels a good read. they provide so much inspiration. and I've also caught on that you share a humour very like that of Grant Naylor, writers of Red Dwarf! xxx

Sorry....I still don't agree....it's not practice to me.
Well....first some poems. Either focus on one thing, or try using different styles. Like Hi Cu and Limbrick. Or on emotions and such. Short stories. Mainly their either original or you can use someone. Ran's help me allot through it.
Currently I just finished my short story on Realistic Fantasy, where a dragon invades New York. Anybody want to read?
