I have a question for those of you who have recently uploaded anything to FF.net. I was told, like over a year ago, not to double-space in between lines or paragraphs, since FF.Net would put in FOUR spaces. Does it still do this? I'm working on a fanfic, not MI or Randall-related, and it would just LOOK better and be easier to read, I think, with double-spaces in between paragraphs or lines of dialog, but I wanted to be sure that FF.Net would put it up in the same format as what I wrote it in, and not completely mess it up.

I'm one of those dummies who always insists on HTML-formatting everything before uploading it. It's rather stupid of me, I realise, but...at least weird spacing isn't something I have to worry about.

Personally I'm mad at FF.net for their stupidity....like the * thing, this, and their stupidity about story removal....

There's a whole new system on FF.net now, so double-spacing should be fine.

What possible reason could they have to do that aserisk thing in the first place? It's caused way more grief than any good it's done (if any...?). Ooh! Pitubulllady ficcage? Really? ;D

What's with the "asterisk thing"? Somebody remind me so I won't have to wade back through the many updates on FF.Net to find it. Can you not put asterisks, or what?

When I put it on Documents to be put into the stories, it isn't there.....
So the break between chapters needs somethings obscure like a () or something. Without a divide, your people who were suddenly in a dark and mysterious room end up outside. It's stupid.... I still don't know if I can get on....you guys might not see any updates from me or Ran for awhile....not that reviews are plentiful nowadays.

I don't see why FF.net can't make it so that whatever you have saved on your computer comes up exactly the same when you post the chapter.

Yup PBL, asterisks don't show up anymore. The weird thing is that they DO still show up on documents that were uploaded before the actual change was made. But I went ahead and replaced all my dividers anyways in case I ever have to make a change to something. I've resorted to using this divider: o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o I'm afraid of trying any other symbols, because who knows if effeffdotnet will make *those* inactive sometime in the future. I figure I'm safe using an actual letter.

I don't see the POINT of making asteriks not show up- they're not like swear words or anything, but THOSE show up anyway! It's ridiculous!

If they're trying to delete swearwords, why get rid of the asterisks, you know? They're what go in the middle of words such as s**t, so little kiddies don't know what it means. Or perhaps they've gotten rid of the asterisks so even stuff like that can't be used?

I don't get the part about the asterisks and cuss words, either, especially since they now DO allow actual profanity to be used, if you rate the fic appropriately. I just went ahead and inserted rows of zeros as my 'breaks", though I honestly don't see what the difference is. What if someone wants to use an asterisk for a footnote, or something?

They could put a number in brackets next to where they want the footnote to be referred to, I guess, but all of this is unecessary. Has anyone tried contacting FF.net and asking what the point of the asterisk thing is?

*thinks back* Hmm...if I remember correctly, this whole "no asterisks allowed" thing started soon after FF.net announced that it would no longer allow "net-speak" in fanfic submissions. And because other symbols like "^", "_", and "~" started not showing up anymore along with the asterisks, my only guess is that FF.net barred asterisks, too, in order to stem the use of something like "*shifty eyes*" in story submissions, just like you can no longer do "^_^" or "~_^". It doesn't make a whole lotta sense to me if this is the case (and please correct me if it really isn't); then again, the whole "no net-speak" rule isn't all that sensible, either. If FF.net is trying to do some form of "quality control" by not allowing submissions in script-form, with net-speak, or even barring songfics (!), I can tell you now it ain't workin'. ~Light Rises
