I just kept going back to the thoughts in the tunnel when Sullivan first came in. I wanted to ask Randall, but since it's close to November and everything...I felt not to.
But as I thought about it, something hit me. Randall came in, when Sullivan and Boo watched through the pipes, from the right side of the "lab". If I remember right, the same entrance Sullivan later used in his "over-lucky-return". So I figured.....
Was Randall talking to Waternoose, or someone else, thought some kind of communication device, as Pitbulllady suggested.... Or.... Meet the monster in person?
If the later...than Fungus seeing Randall talking to Waternoose ahead of time would explain the red geek's calmness about Waternoose's appearence later on....

You can definately hear Waternoose's voice in that sequence, especially if you play it back in stereo and listen with headphones, even though that ominous humming sound in the background makes it difficult to hear otherwise. We never SEE him, though, and his voice has a slightly "tinny" quality to it, like it's coming through a small speaker, so I would assume that he's speaking to Randall via a walkie-talkie or some other two-way communication device.

Yeah, I noticed that as well. You can certainly hear Waternoose, and I believe he was flinging abuse at poor Ran? That's what I heard, anyway.

Waternoose asks Randall(in an impatient tone), "What are you doing NOW?" and Randall replies, "Making up for lost time." Waternoose then says, "Good. So's the economy." I really believe that the old fart had Randall convinced that all his hard work and risk-taking was indeed for the betterment of the Monster World as a whole, not just for the betterment of Waternoose's bank account.

Yep, another way to manipulate Randall into doing the best possible job on the SE.

....Heh heh....
"Pitbulllady's right here.....the screwball crab hardly ever came down to "pipe land" beneath the factory refinery....or as he calls it, the "remnants of unless jobs", seeing as Scream is more confined than it was before....anyway.....Waternoose consider himself "high class", pfft, and nearly never came from the factory. So, he just used an old communication speaker they use to use for employees when pipe repair took place....a way to keep in touch with me without coming himself....he only came down when I finished the Extractor just because it was important to him...like "I" ever was important to him...."
....I thought you didn't want to....
"I'm...fine...."

I don't think he's talking to Waternoose I think he's Talking to Fungus Because when I watch it on Portable DVD Player with headPhones I can here it better and it sounds like fungus being his dorky self! I'll watch it again and post what I heard!

No, you can definately hear three voices in that tunnel, IF you have a stereo tv or have the tv wired through a stereo receiver. Fungus's voice IS there, but before Randall actually speaks to him, he's doing math problems or statistics out loud(What-a-Geek!), while Waternoose's voice can definately be heard asking Randall what he's doing, with an impatient tone. I don't think it was the intent for us to be able to hear that clearly, without taking extra steps, like the stereo receiver, because it gave away Waternoose's involvement too soon, and it also made it fairly clear that all this was HIS idea, and that Randall was doing HIS work, when the filmmakers wanted everyone to think that it was Randall's "evil plot" alone.

DON'T ANSWER THIS.... But.... Why would Pixar add in something if hardly anybody might hear it? Hmm...

I don't think it was "added in", so much as it was nearly taken out. Pixar did not originally intend to have a villain, remember? AND when Disney insisted, Pixar still did not intend for the villain to be Randall, but Waternoose. Disney(or more specifically, Eisner)didn't like the idea of the CEO being the Bad Guy, so they more or less wanted Waternoose's role sort of glossed over and the main finger of guilt pointed at Randall instead. I suspect that this particular scene was originally recorded in much greater clarity, leaving no doubt that Waternoose was behind this whole conspiracy, and that Randall was working for him under duress. When it was decided that it would be better to make everyone think that Randall was the real culprit all along, the conversation was muted and that creepy background noise dubbed in to further distort what was being said.

So in turn Disney was hiding what Pixar tried to sneak in. Or...Pixar sneak in something Disney wouldn't notice.
Hey. You think the Waternoose was a representation of Eisner at all?

Now that explaination, Pitbulllady, makes quite a bit of sense. ^_^ We should all remember that a creative process does occur, so things do change (for better or for worse).

Yeah, I DO think that Henry J. Waternoose, Evil CEO and all-around Corporate B******, was a metaphore for Michael Eisner, Evil CEO and all-around Corporate B******. Now that I think about it, that would also explain why all of those DISNEY-produced books go out of their way to vilify Randall at every opportunity("cheated his way to the top", etc.), while either failing to mention Waternoose altogether, or barely giving mention to what HE did, or simply describing him as "the grandfatherly type". Sure glad MY grandfather wasn't that type!
