I watched MI with my family yesterday and I burst out laughing at the scene when Mike and Sulley were watching the commercial. I never noticed Randall in the background before, crossing his arms and shaking his head like he hated being in the cheesy commercial and wanted out ASAP.

Yeah, I've seen that many times. He knows that all this hype with Sullivan is fake. Out of thousands of Scarers, naturally Waternoose picks Sullivan and Wazowski to represent the entire company, to be up front. Randall knows that it's all about nepotism, not skill, not hard work, but what your last name is, who you're related to and who your friends are.

YES. That last viewing I had of 'Monsters, Inc' in my 'Monsters 1 & 2' marathon, which I watched late one night, I DID notice Randall in the MI commercial. Glad he was in it!

He didn't want to be in it, though. Guarantee that Waternoose made him appear in the commercial, as well as picking Mike and Sulley to star in it. Randall knows that whole thing is a farce.

If he doesn't want to be in it (don't blame him) can't he just turn invisible? And is anyone able to get a good picture and post it?

I'm sure that Waternoose made Randall stand in for that commercial, so if Randall wasn't seen, there would have been some serious negative repercussions for him. pitbulllady

Shoot... the whole Monster World is hard on Randall. Things have got to improve for him... drastically.

Eh, maybe I'm just assuming.

One thing we have to remember is that a lot of people, including Randall's co-workers, just assumed that expression WAS his normal expression, so no one would have questioned it upon seeing the commercial. We learned in MU that Randall has that scowl-squint because he can't see very well!

Eh.... I'm not fully convinced that Randall has poor eyesight. Sorry if others disagree with me, but Randall simply does too much physical work with too much precision to make me think that he can't see well. Those glasses he was wearing are ONLY shown briefly in that one scene. Randall may be near sighted, and those glasses were for farsighted vision.
I don't know... all we do know is that Randall sure doesn't need glasses that badly, because he never wears them again after meeting Mike.

If Randall's eyesight was fine, those glasses wouldn't have had such thick lenses. Watch him closely in both movies; he has a LOT of trouble reading and has to hold whatever it is that he's trying to read practically touching his face! He does this with the newspaper in MI and he does it with his own class notes in MU. Randall most likely is very nearsighted, which means he'd be able to see most things fairly well as long as they're close, but would have trouble seeing things that are further away, or printed words. I can see objects fairly clearly myself close-up, but can't read squat without my glasses. I don't have any problem navigating familiar places without my glasses, though. For a nearsighted person, squinting helps to compensate for the eyes not focusing on far-away objects. Note that when he has to run, Randall drops to all-eights, not just because that is faster, but because his face is closer to the ground/floor so he can spot objects that might trip him up. The only reason for Randall ditching his glasses in the first place had nothing to do with whether or not he actually needed them, but with him taking Mike's questionable advice because he trusted Mike that much. Mike told him that the glasses gave away his position while he was "invisible", something Randall had never even thought of using as a Scare technique. While that WAS true, in terms of the glasses giving away his position, I don't think there would be a kid anywhere who would not be completely freaked out by a pair of floating, moving glasses appearing in their room!

Well, I'd imagine Randall's vision would be kind of meh...like it is pretty bad but not, say, like some people I know who can't even read what's on the desk they're sitting at clearly. I can't legally drive without glasses, having 20/60 vision in one eye and 20/150 vision in the other...it's considered pretty bad nearsightedness, but I can get around fine without glasses and sometimes even forget I'm not wearing them sometimes. I know some people with bad vision who have to squint and yet they refuse to wear glasses because they are self conscious about how it looks (without glasses I personally widen my eyes to see better unlike most people). So I don't think it's unbelievable for him to be able to get around without glasses because of both practical (his invisibility) and aesthetic (he doesn't like the way he looks in them) reasons and still seem to an onlooker to get around fine without them. Imo if he mistook Mike for Boo then his vision must not be that good...Plus his squint and the fact that in Disney Infinity he says something like the area around him seems cool but he can't really tell without his glasses.

Just read PBL's post, and about the observation that he has to hold papers up to his face to read: maybe he has astigmatisms, because an astigmatism may not necessarily make your eyesight too blurry to get around without glasses (like, say, Velma from Scooby Doo), but astigmatisms make your eyesight blurry at ALL distances to some degree, whether near or far. So he'd be near sighted but still may have a little trouble reading close up text, but he eyesight wouldnt necessarily be as impaired as a person so near sighted they can't see well up close.
