According to the Art of Monsters, Inc., Fungus was going to be a Scarer. He was a lot taller in the original designs- taller than Randall, even- but Pixar changed his role in later stages, to become Randall's assistant.

I'm sorry, but it is REALLY hard for me to imagine Fungus, in the version WE saw, as a Scarer! I can see more people being afraid of Mike than of him! And Heaven knows, if he ever got into a kid's room and there was a computer or a new game system, you'd NEVER get him to leave!

Yeah, it's a pretty funny image. I guess they thought his general form wasn't scary enough, and that he would be better suited as an assistant.

hahaha, yes! Fungus a scarer... Pretty weird... Hmm... Would I be scared of nerds? Well, I guess I would freak out if someone knows the answer on 6345 x 7346, without a calculator!

If you listen very carefully to the audio in that scene where Fungus is waiting on Randall to return to the refinery with "the kid", you will notice that's this is basically what he IS doing-mathmatical problems, in his head, out loud. Without a calculator. Yeah, when you really think about it, that IS sorta scary. pitbulllady

Really? Omg Never noticed that... Some talking, but I just can't understand it 'till: 'YES! I got the kid!' What do they say?

Yea I was wondering the same thing. I've gone over that part lots just to try to understand the diologe. Even the subtitles don't give anything for it.

That's so neat - to get to see the stages of character development. How much different it could have been!

^i know, it's strange. i love going from the first concepts they had and then going down the line until you get the movie. its great how much a story can change and also those tiny things they decided to keep. Ned lol.

I can hardly imagine Fungus, 'the' Fungus we all know being a scarer! What will he do? Talk those kids into screaming? Lol ;D. To hear that dialogue when Sulley's nearing the SE, you'd need to really amplify it up .

To hear that dialogue when Sulley's nearing the SE, you'd need to really amplify it up . I dunno...if you're not a "math person", Fungus' conversations can be pretty darn scary! Like in that scene you just described, where it's best heard with headphones, and you can hear Fungus doing complex mathematical computations out loud...to HIMSELF(he does not yet know Randall is approaching)...THAT, my friends, is some nightmare-inducing stuff right there! I know when I was a kid, if something with big horn-rim glasses had come into MY room and started reciting equations and stuff, I'd have screamed my head off, since that would have reminded me too much of my second-grade math-loving teacher, Mrs. Killgore. It's also clear that Fungus talks to himself, out loud, a LOT, which makes you wonder about his emotional stability. I really feel sorry for a creative soul like Randall having to listen to all those formulas and theorums and algebraic stuff day in and day out, even if they were necessary for the design and construction of the Scream Extractor. It would be sorta like working with "Rain Man", though. Oh, in case you haven't guessed, I am SO not a "math person"; I don't even think that part of my brain responsible for that stuff ever developed. pitbulllady

I am in top set for Maths at school, but it's one of my weakest subjects.
