I'm somewhat a new comer in the sense of Randall fandom, but I've recently rewatched MI, and watched MU so I feel like I got a better understanding of the mind of Boggs to an extent from my viewpoint. And I adore it in a sense.
So instead of being one of being a newbie who introduces themselves with a Hi, I feel like posting my thoughts on Randall. Feel free to read, or just say Hi if you don't want to read. Wouldn't want to force my view obviously.
----The TLDR section----
Essentially as I see Randall, he's got obviousy psychological issues to an extent, that only further increase as his life and career continue. Scarers are amongst the top-tier of workers in their world, essentially being the people most looked up to, and with an entire world whose energy is focused on obtaining energy from Children Screams, and having universities have larger funding directed toward the Scarer Programs [As seen on MU's campus where the majority of the buildings were outclassed to the Scarer's program.], being a Scarer demands respect, demands attention in a way, and essentially provides one a way to 'make it big'. To say you're one of the reasons the world's running smoothly is just something that commands respect.
And as such seeing such benefits as; respect, authority, power, and perhaps love from peers, Randall pursued this career. It makes a big statement about his goals and ambition, but his personality while attending the university at the time, also reflects back on this. He's nervous, and greets others like Mike his roommate with respect and such. And he has low control of his powers at the time, accidentally utilizing them. It almost seemed like he was ashamed of this, almost seeing as a flaw, but Mike insisted upon using this ability of his, and when Mike mentioned the glasses, he even went so far to follow his advice on that regard, despite needing them. It shows that a positive reaction to him at this time, simply influences him majorly.
He's afraid, unsure, and has a simple hope. To be noticed. It's all he really strives for. It's an underlying aspect of his character throughout his existence. And his idols to obtain this dream of his, happens to be the 'cool' kids, or ROR. He even cooked up cupcakes simply in an attempt to use another one of his talents to try to gain appeal, drawing smiley faces on them even. He's got this almost innocent blissful unawareness of his gullibility. Although he must have been somewhat heartbroken when his cupcakes exploded in his face. It may have even caused some trauma[Doubtful to myself, but might as well mention.]. It was at a cool party, where he wanted to achieve some kind of notice, had worked hard and utilized his own skill to try to get there, and then probably became a laughing stock for a short moment or two, and probably wanted to leave the party.
He's also seen to be loyal to an extent, if it helps his interest. Mike was a student who studied vigorously, and Randall benefitted him during his studies. Mike probably did the same in return, but their interactions were somewhat limited from what we saw during the movie. Mike's constant studying, and Randall's constant effort to be noticed, didn't really mesh well in terms of building a solid relationship, although the moments they did share probably gave Randall some sort of confidence. Especially knowing Mike thought highly of his power, and probably of him. As a friend.
But the movie progresses, Mike and Sully are expunge from the program, Mike and Randall drifted farther apart due to this, and Randall and finally found a way to become apart of ROR, the most popular or in his definition of 'popular', on the campus. Inspite of his friend's request for aid, and goes over to the group, almost immediately asked to use his power for laughs. His ambition to be noticed, had been abused for their entertainment and to his embarrassment if he was aware of it, given his gullibility. But he must have felt some joy knowing that things were going his way. He set himself on a path and he was going to make it work. He even uses his power more and more, like Mike said he should, even using it to prank Mike himself at ROR's request. His desire to be 'someone', leads him to essentially betraying his former roommate just for a laugh and some standing with his friends. This interaction with the ROR group might have even warped Randall's view on what the right way to achieve success and acknowledgement and the wrong way is. His social skills lacked any sort of sustenance and he was learning the majority of them from the wrong crowd.
And to finally top it off, the Scare Games. Each win probably pushed him forward and with Mike competing against him he felt a need to prove himself. If he lost to the supposed 'cutest fraternity' on campus, could he really be apart of ROR, and a good Scarer? It was his resolution. And then he had to go up against Sully. Sully was from a line of notorious Scarers, almost having their fame handed down to them on a silver plate with a reputation as natural scarers. [Which probably leads to Sully's initial ego, but this is about Randy.~] He was the big winner of their competition and if Randall could pull this off, he guaranteed his place. But due to an accident and circumstance, Randall not only did not get a chance to utilize his scare technique properly without a chance, he was embarrassed infront of everyone, probably felt sabotaged, and felt angry at not only Sullivan but himself. He states he'll never lose to Sulivan again, driving himself harder, pushing himself.
And there's where MU ends. Give or take ten or so years, where Randall most likely graduated from MU, and just kept pushing himself to become the Scarer he wanted to be with all his education. But there's Sully and Mike, who after working their way up through the lower ladders of the job essentially until they became official Scarers. Sully kept winning year after year the Scream Record, proving himself to be Number 1, and essentially the best of the best. And Randall with his natural ability and power, his scaring education, the dream job he worked his hide for, his ROR fraternity, his ambition and dreams, gets undermined by the 'dropout' or 'natural-born Scarer' day after day after day after day after day. He even hopes to become an heir of sort for Mr. Waternoose's company, and the one thing standing in his way from making his impression on Waternoose is James Sullivan.
Both Sully and Randall's scare scores are at least twenty thousand or so away from third place, and every door only gives so many points. Sully's points are obtained by his work ethic, and just simply enjoying himself and what he does. He achieves what he does in a healthy manner always trying to keep himself at his best, and just generally being a friendly monster to all. Randall on the other hand is consumed in his thoughts of being noticed, the best, the unsurpassed. He angers quickly and easily, his goal so close to reach after so long only to have one final road block in his way. And as Monsters Inc begins, the economical crisis of energy begins. And Randall puts forth his best invention, his ultimate achievement and plan into motion.
A way to resolve the energy crisis, a way to ensure his place unrivaled ever again, a way to finally get all he thought he ever wanted. The Scream Extractor. Randall was completely malevolent bent on his own intentions, bent on his own goals, willing to kill easily and do anything. If this worked, it was worth almost anything for him. This was all his work and effort amounted into one moment. He antagonized Mike and Sully, and was going to obtain a human child for the sake of this device. Consider the Scream Extractor was going to be well-utilized if it worked, and it would've most likely, it was going to be common place. And since no monster has ever made a bond to a human, barring current events with Sully, this wasn't a demonic practice, it wasn't evil.
At best it was immoral science in their world. And time and time again Sullivan stood in his way. He even went so far as to have him banished into the human world, Randall was so far gone. And when Waternoose went so far to state he had to get rid of his 'best Scarer' for Randall it left it's mark. Randall resorted to attempted murder on that eternal roadblock in his way, and risked his life in a final attempt to make everything he ever wish for come true.
From his social influence with ROR, from all his efforts blowing up in his face, from always having to be beaten by the Dropout, Natural-born Scarer Legend, from being berated or abused from the people he wants respect the most from, from feeling all his dreams slip away at this crucial moment...
It all slowly broke away at the Randall we first met. A nice, kind, nervous, shy, timid, unsure, and scared Randy. And it ultimately ended up with his Banishment. All due to his undying ambition that went horribly wrong. Not to say he was in the complete right and justified in all his actions, but his underlying goal wasn't evil. It was attention, power, admiration, to be a hero or even...loved. To be important. And in the end, nobody will probably remember him, or if they do not fondly. Well nobody except us.
----TLDR Enddds.----
Nice to meeet you anyhow!~
