Will there ever come a time when a Monsters fanfic will be able to be made a movie by that fan? After all, computer technology is already at the point where the monsters can be animated, and indeed was so twelve years ago. Yes, Pixar has access to more computer power than a fan does, but I have more computer power in my pocket than the largest computer in the world did when I was in college, and more than existed in the world combined when I was born. And I would imagine that voice synthesis would be even easier (I may be wrong), so we could reproduce the actors voices. Or is this proof that I have read too much science fiction?

This isn't science fiction at all. I have no doubts that fans would be able to buy enough computing power to make a movie comparable to the original MI*. Much, much bigger problem would be finding and funding enough talented and skilled people to actually make it happen. Storyboarders, screenwriters, animators, sculptors, admins, assistants... If it was anything but "three monsters in a room" movie, it would just be too complicated on the human resource side. Furthermore, the price of the software licenses would also be of concern... Voice synthesis is actually quite complicated, which is why it isn't currently utilized much, as it would be too costly to make it sound realistic. However, as more and more processes become automated (background MU characters were animated by the computer, not humans, for example), the time of Pixar fanflicks will inevitably come. Software license cost will be the only concern left...

I've played around with this concept before. I use to have a fair animation program on an old computer, but life liked to kick me in a sun-deprived place and I lost it (and the computer). Not sure on the actual costs today, but I imagine animation programs are highly expensive. Blender is free, if I recall, but at the moment I'm ill prepared to venture into it due to other circumstances.
I HAVE played around with something else. A fan-game. Originally using an RPG program, I was trying to make a game set after MI. Although at the time, many of the concepts were beyond me...so I was shooting in the dark and fascinated by each discovery. But yeah, lost that along with the animation program. But I found a different program that could allow me to make an adventure-style game. While I've yet to test it on a more-compatible system, it may show promise. I've already completed (I think), in-game character pieces for Sullivan, Wazowski, Boo (though I think I haven't done her walking animation), and, of course, Randall. Though they require some tweaking. At the moment, I have other projects and worries that making working on it difficult. Maybe sometime in the future, when things settle down and I can go back to it.
