Ever since the part where Ran said "Let's just move", and Mike ignored him, I knew that was the end of their friendship.

To Randall, it was friendship....to Wazowski...something else. Randall was a study partner, somebody to help him reach HIS goals. It will require subsequent viewings, but so far that's the impression I got.

To Randall, it was friendship....to Wazowski...something else. Randall was a study partner, somebody to help him reach HIS goals. It will require subsequent viewings, but so far that's the impression I got. That is EXACTLY the impression I got as well, RB. Randall had far more of an emotional "investment", if you will, in Mike, than Mike had in him. Mike was probably the first person who'd ever really been NICE to Randall, so Randall mistook being civil for Mike actually liking him as a friend. I interpret Randall's hesitation to run to the door when Mike opens it in that scene where they first meet as Randall sizing up Mike as a potential threat. He's probably been both anticipating and dreading this meeting, not knowing anything about his new roommate, wanting and hoping so much that it will be someone nice...but fearing that it won't be, that it will be just another big jock who will treat him like a piece of dirt. You can almost feel that palpable sense of relief when he sees a little green "beach ball" of a guy, not someone who's likely to wind up making his life more hell than it's already been. But Mike put pursuit of his dream ahead of everything, and that included friendship, with anyone. He repeatedly brushes off Randall's attempts to hang out with him, socially, although he's all too happy to take advantage of Randall as HIS coach and tutor. Randall is simply a means to achieving his dream of becoming the Greatest Scarer in the World, while Randall really wanted to be, and HAVE, a friend. pitbulllady

(Spoiler Bits within) What got me a little more is that proper shot at the football game. We've speculated what Randall was doing in that for the Subway commercial, now we know. I was partially right, it WAS the RORs, but they were involved more than I thought. Randall gets popcorn dumped on him...no wonder he was nervous and looking up toward them and at Wazowski. Randall's not one for confrontation in his early years (we see that later in fact), so maybe he was looking to Wazowski to say something (or maybe worried he will, starting confrontation). But nope, Wazowski was too focused on his studies. I think this was during the study "montage" for Wazowski if I recall, but that scene, when you think about it, seems to focus more on Randall than it does Wazowski. -
I saw somewhere that somebody claimed Randall only wanted "COOL" friends, to be with the cool group. Of course, that's not true. He was all too happy to be Wazowski's friend from the start. Heck, even when Wazowski turned him down for the party, he was still ready and willing to help him study to follow his dream. When did WAZOWSKI help Randall out? Maybe he did over the time they were together, but from what we saw, he didn't. Sure, encouraging words, "it'll be fine", but still, there was some one-sidedness here. -
Of course, know from Tumblr, that an issue was him and ROR. You would think that IF Wazowski had any care into RANDALL'S life...he would have been AWARE that Randall had joined ROR. (actually there's a thought on that time line, considering what Randall did when Hardscrabble got the "death look" after the canister broke. (anybody notice that that thing, near the start, ZOOMED BY Randall? He got a FULL blast of that scream in his face) Anyway, THAT is something to consider ya know. If Wazowski had stopped with his obsession he may have noticed what was going ON in his roommate's life. If I recall, Randall's things were STILL in the dorm room when Wazowski re-discovered the Scare Game flyer on his wall. Randall was STILL his roommate at the time.
That "don't blow this for me" line is really totally eclipsed by Randall's disappointed "oh" expression when Wazowski offers him to join. He WANTS to..and feels disappointed of not being asked earlier. Then again, Wazowski came up with the idea ON THE FLY so nice heads-up there for your buddy Randy.
