I've been hearing a lot of crap about this movie before the first trailer is out and I understand why that is. The first film only came out in 2008.
I was a little tiffed when I heard they were already doing a remake too. It seems like they're only doing it because of the current vampire hype in the U.S., but I feel a little better after reading some comments from the director, Matt Reeves. He seems to genuinely like the story, but feels it didn't live up to the book. So he wants to make a film that is more faithful to the original story. I read the book before I watched the movie and I really think the original film, despite being very good, was missing some wonderful scenes.
I was reeling with fanrage when I found out they changed the main characters names, but soon got over it. I got over it after a while, but I'm not sure it I'll be able to get used to it when the film actually comes out. I've also grown fond of Chloe Moretz after her wonderful portrayal of Hit Girl in the Kick-Ass movie.
Still, it seems like a lot of people are dissing this movie before a trailer is even released just because they feel they have to if they're a fan. I think a true fan would be thrilled at the idea of a movie that revolves around the book more. The original left out main characters, wonderful scenes, and pretty much the whole end climax (which was epppiiiiicccc). I'm also hoping that it will somewhat kill this Twilight craziness going on, as I always felt LTROI was Twilight done right.
At the same time, I think I'm expecting too much from this new film. I'm horribly excited for it. I check online to see if the trailer has been released every single day, sometimes several times a day. I even had a dream the other night that I went to the theater to see it and it was awful to the point I walked out. I don't believe I've been this crazy into something for a while.
Does anyone else know of the book and film and, if so, are you excited for the remake or wishing it would just go away?

Well, at the risk of receiving criticism, I really hope Harry Potter will at LEAST die down in popularity. The anti-snake messages are the least of it; you can't really avoid it when you want to, especially when one is studying Latin.

While the Harry Potter craze has died down, I believe that the books will remain with us for a long while. Especially considering the theme park is opening next month. Can't wait to go to their >w<
I know a lot of people who bought snake because of Harry Potter. The books are what started my own interest in them :3

I think you did tell me about this once before, about that book and the movie based on it...not sure if this will cause the Twilight craze to slow down since they are planning to make all the books into movies but I have a feeling that more diehard vampire fans will feel better. Alot of the LDD board members on Mezco don't seem to be fans of Twilight but their dislike of it has more to do with the portrayal of vampires than anything else. In fact, when news of Series 19 was floating around on the boards, the first thing a member said was that this series better not have sparkling vampires because "vampires don't sparkle". (for those who don't know LDD series 19 had a theme on vampires hence why the set was also called "Children of the night" and I own two...but I'm getting off topic now). Personally, I have nothing against different intereptations of movie monsters like how the werewolves are done in Twilight, I like the idea of a werewolf being a person who changes into a wolf literally as opposed to the traditional wolf man. Since I've never seen the original film or read the book, maybe I'll check it out, been seeing alot of remake films receantly such as the Nightmare remake and Friday the 13th.

I actually don't care how vampires or anything kind of mythical creature are portrayed and I find it kind of silly when people do. I see that a lot around the anti-Twilight bunch, but it's mostly the people who haven't read the books or watched the movies. Personally, I feel that how the author wants to portray her creations and her rules around them are up to her. I actually enjoy Meyer's werewolves a lot and they're canonly not werewolves. They're shape shifters. But I think they would of been fine werewolves too, and I'll call them that since that's how they were portrayed in the series. The only beef I have with them is the imprinting. Which gets to my general Twilight argument, but I don't want to go into that right now, lol.
I have to admit, the Eclipse movie looks 10 times better than the book. That book had nothing in it. It was all Bella and Edward making out and you didn't even get to see the fight at the end because Bella was in a tent :/

Yeah, it can be silly but that's the diehard fans for ya. ;D So this remake is supposed to come out this year?! Wow, that's fast!

Yeah, they've pretty much been working on it for the last year. It should be in post production right now and is set to release in October. The trailer isn't out yet, but I'll post it here when it is. While most fans are going to die because it's not going to be just like the original film, I personally don't see the point of the remake like this if it's not going to be extremely different. In fact, I'll be disappointed if it's too similar. I'm really interested in what Reeves is going to do. He seems to be just as big of fan of the story as I am, which I respect. Reeves doesn't seem to pop out movies just for money. He seems to be genuinely interested in the stories and not just how much he's going to make for it so he can move onto the next thing. He says he feels the original film didn't focus on Oskar like the book did and that he's hoping to do that more in his film.
His intentions are kind of funny, if you think about it. I wish I had the means to remake a movie based on one of my favorite books just because I think the original didn't do it like I would. Goodness, would so many movies have remakes then XD
I agree with him too, but it's so hard to portray Oskar. I think his character in the movie was lacking this desperation that could only be portrayed in words. I'm not sure if something like the is possible to put in pictures.
This is a fan video I particularly like. The song was also inspired by the movie/book:
Goodness, I mostly love it for that song. It's just perfect.

Tons of clips have been released now and the movie looks great so far. It really seems like it's trying to be it's own film while still respecting the original. From what I've seen, it looks like it's retained more of the feeling from the book than the original film, which I'm loving. Can't wait until October 1st! Hope I'm not let down!

I'm also pretty excited myself, my mom even seemed interested when I had told her that it was based upon a book...who knows, maybe when it comes out, me and her can have another girl's night out and see it. ;D

I don't really have a problem with vampire being reimagined myself because that's what literature and general story telling has always done.
Heck, I make up a rule with ghosts I'm playing with that the dead can't kill the dead. Not from a rule but they literally can't do it. Never read that rule anywhere in folklore (though it may exist). I simply made it up. But it kind of has to be made for the actions to make sense in some way. Plus while they can't kill directly and there are 'rules' them trying to bend them or try to use other methods to solve their problems to make for some conflict. It wouldn't be much of a story if someone simply asked why they didn't drop a piano Tex Avery style on the bickering sisters who are driving him batty. Being dead yourself for a long time would probably mess with your concept of life and its value eventually if you're not careful. And this ghost isn't completely stable to begin with. Eternity is BORING to begin with and the devil makes time for idle thumbs. He likes the idea of people living in his house, but he has his limits.
Of course sparkles in vampires case are just silly and should be mocked, but they probably should be mocked on the basis that it is simply an unintentionally hilarious change which makes little sense in of itself. It should not be made so that 'any change' of vampire is bad (she says it makes them 'attractive' to prey. Uh huh.Keep telling yourself that love. Maybe to SOME people but not to various societies at large.). Plus Meyer's vampires are also simply far too overpowered. There are next to no disadvantages or weaknesses after a few months of getting over their blood lust which unfortunatly I do feel is missing the point. Everything has a cost to it in my book be it being some immortal being to 'true love'. If there is no cost, there is no conflict and no real story. Twilight tries to make coflict but ultimately fails at it or it is subpar in its execution.
Honestly? I find the concept of vampires bursting into FLAMES when they hit sunlight as more rediculous than sparkles which is more 'accepted' for some reason. But I have more or less my own version which I have played around with the notion of anyway as well as ghosts.
The movie seems interesting to me, I never saw the original, but I think I might see this (or read the books).

Yeah, I've never really minded different concepts about mythical creatures, so I never got caught up in the whole sparkle debate, although I do enjoy poking fun of it. You're right that bursting into flames is just as ridiculous thought. I believe it's simply accepted because it "cooler." I'm reading The Passage by Justin Cronin at the moment and I'm very fond of his vamps. They simply can't stand being in the sun, but can tolerate it in levels. That's more fitting than flames, imo, but I wouldn't change LTROI for the life of me. I'd say pick up the book if you get the chance. I got sucked in and read it in a matter of days. I'd read the book before watching the original. Personally, It think I would find the original boring if I hadn't read the book. It's just very mellow and calm. A good film, but lacking the action that a vamp flick really needs. I can't wait to hear all of your opinions on the film after it comes out. I'll certainly want to talk about it

Vampires bursting into flames in sunlight?! The few things that I've seen show vampires weakness to sunlight mostly shows them kind of melting or forming into smoke, I've never seen a bursting into flames on vampires before! Actually, MG, that whole ghosts don't kill sounds kind of something I heard in Casper although I think it was more of the "ghosts can't hurt you because they are just spirits with unfinished business", mainly heard that from the film, not the old school cartoons although you would think logically that since the ghosts could move objects, for sure they could hurt you with them? But that's why the vampires sparkle, to be attractive to their prey? But the only sparkling vamps I've seen are only the Cullen family, none of the other vamps in her books show any kind of sparkles and also, they showed them mostly hunting AT NIGHT. How in the hell are they going to attract prey with the sparkles if they mostly hunt at night and the sparkles only happen in sunlight? As for the Cullens, I highly doubt that sparkles are going to attract a deer! I always thought that in Meyer's books, the vampires sparkled because they were perfect beings, both physically and as non human beings, not because it makes them look pretty to prey?! She would have been better off if she just did what was done in Princess Resurrection where this vampire girl attends school and such during the day but it's only when it's not full out sunny although she has been shown to nearly faint from being dizzy due to the sun. Basically, it's minus the sparkles but still same concept. Well, at least the werewolves changing into actual wolves is still cool. Actually MG, I think in the books (keep in mind, I'm going by the fillms) the actual biggest threats to the vamps (at least it seems to me) is the Volturi because apparantly, they make the rules of what goes on within the vampires lives and if order isn't exactly followed, they will kill other vamps....vampires can be killed in her books but it seems that it can only be done by a werewolf or another vamp.

I've seen different variations, but nyeah it's either been melting or bursting into flames, both of which are kind of silly.
Mmmm, been years since I've seen Casper, so guess I forgot that. But I've never actually seen it in actual folklore itself. (But didn't the Uncles kill Kats dad?) Some ghosts in stories are supposed to be able to affect physical objects and it seems like some can't, and the ones I mess with can if they concentrate. But honestly a part of me can't really recall any story regarding someone being killed DIRECTLY by a ghost in any case, as close as you get is dying by fright or suicide cases or people being driven absolutely crazy and going on a murder/manslaughter spree in their efforts.
I think the problem in Myere's version stems in that the only threat are other supernatural creatures too, ordinary humans apparently can't do squat, you might as well not waste your time even being frightened if you are one. It's more interesting when you feel the humans have an actual chance and can get your blood really pumping wondering if they'll survive and can fight them off. Have a human with no powers against Meyer vamps and all tension is removed, because the only way the human will live if another vamp or werewolf protects them or said vamp suddenly decides they're not hungry. I kind of prefer the idea that someone who has been trained can deal with them at least. I mean, I would have been pleasently surprised if one of Meyer's vamps had been killed by some human or humans they'd been hunting. But the thing is that is not possible to be made realistic at all with Meyer's vamps in the first place. They're too powerful so only other vamps or perhaps werewolves have a chance.
I do like the sound of that Bampot. I like that idea, or the idea they feel incredibly weak in general daylight hours. I don't mind the idea of them DYING in sunlight but from like passing out and remaining there and then dying from overexposure. I think I'll try to get the books.
Only some people can pull off the flames thing, and usually when it's played for LAUGHS (Terry Pratchett who is awesome). If done so more seriously... well I just can't take it seriously.

I think Lindqvist pulled the fire thing rather well, but perhaps that's only because something slightly more ridiculous happened just before. They should have left the cat part out of the film. It was actually disturbing in the book, but there's no way you can see it and not laugh.
That's on thing I like about Cronin, his vamps have every area to be more powerful than humans and a human can still take one down. I'm getting near the end of The Passage. I'm looking forward to a movie. Rights were bought for one way back in 2007, long before the book was released, which was this year. I'm hoping it will go into production soon.
