I don't know if I've been away from television for a long time to not notice it before, but I just saw a pretty lengthy TS3 trailer yesterday that felt like a punch to the stomach, in the worst way possible. Andy is going to college (we knew that) but the new scenes with Woody and his toy buddies seemed more like something used to create hype for a Dreamworks movie; i.e., relying on 'funny' or humourous parts/characters in the film to reel in an audience. I felt slightly embarrassed during that scene between Barbie and Ken (whom I initially thought was gay due to his...wardrobe tastes) and the song played in the background by Jessica Simpson, Take my Breath Away was enough to make me cringe and seriously doubt the originality, wit, and freshness of a TS3. Dreamworks is notorious for including contemporary pop music in its films as soundtracks and trailer clips. I was listening to Jessica Simpson on a TS3 trailer, with Barbie and Ken it in. What the heck happened to Randy Newman?? Then there is a clip where Woody seems to be falling but is stopped from the fall a la Mission Impossible by his pull-string, Buzz who seems to have transformed into Antonio Banderas as Puss in Boots, Barbie who comments on Ken's "AS-cot" (his scarf), Ham mentions toilet humour, and a toy dinasour who chats with "just another dinasour" via IM. Really? Was she checking her FB too?
I don't know--these concepts (pop culture references embedded into CGI films and not-so-subtle language to sustain humour, like Shrek, Shark Tale and Madagascar) seem almost a little offensive to me considering this is Pixar, the god of all that is CGI and original stories that used to whisk me away to different worlds. But THIS?

Funny you should mention Dreamworks. I really believe that How To Train Your Dragon will beat Toy Story 3 when the Oscar time rolls around. I had started to lose any hope of seeing an amazing animation from Dreamworks until that moved came out. It's original and lacks all the toilet humor and pop culture references that Dreamworks is notorious for.
I feel like Toy Story 3 will be just like Toy Story 2...okaaaay. Although, I am expecting it to be slightly worse. I'm not a big fan of Toy Story 2, to be honest.
I also feel like Pixar is swapping originality for quick cash sequels. While I'm happy to see a follow-up for Monster Inc., I'm also highly disappointed that Newt was pushed aside. Pixar is getting too richardy and Dreamworks is going to sneak up on them. Maybe if HTTYD wins an Academy Award for best animation this year, Pixar will open their eyes and realize that rehashes won't cut it in the long run. Doubt it, but there's always a chance. I'd just hate to see good, original films like Newt get put on the back burner for something like Cars 2.

Oh geez.
I'll admit I didn't care for Buzz in it and I think I mentioned feeling a little apprehensive somewhere before but I didn't make the Dreamworks connection.
Now I can't unsee it.
I have yet to see HTTYD, but I do plan on seeing it.
But sadly, a part of me thinks that Pixar might do well regardless if that's true simply BECAUSE it's Pixar. For instance Up was good in some ways (but I still somehow can't complete unsee it as a less interesting weird version of Monsters Inc without the monsters and the interesting world in some ways, though at least the man protaganists act differently and I liked Carl/eEllie), but I don't think it deserved to win- there were better nominees really in its line up IMO, honestly I think that was what made them win- more people had heard of it because Pixar is famous, it had little to do with quality.
Oh boy. (As Sulley would say). This really doesn't raise my hopes for the Monsters Inc sequel( has Pixar actually said it directly yet?) in some ways either.
You've got a good point on the other issues rd.
So dreamworks has come up with the film with heart and Pixar has come up with a movie possibly going to be filled with pop culture references and humour.
Are we in a parallel dimension? o_0

Huh, not sure what to say to this considering that I haven't seen this trailer actually, or at least the one you're talking about RD, I'll probably have to look it up on Youtube then. Haven't seen that How to train your dragon due to the fact that some of these designs they have for dragons in the film...are...well, just freaking ugly! I love dragons and I honestly didn't know what to think when I first saw a trailer for that movie considering the dragon designs and such. Maybe when it hits dvd or the dollar theater I might go see it...I don't know... Edit change: Alright, just looked on Youtube and found what I think is the trailer that you were talking about RD, www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNMpa5yBf5oI posted up the link, is this it or is it at least similar to it? Compared to the first trailer I saw at theaters...well, I'm not sure what to say to this actually except for one little thing....what the f*ck!? That had to be the weirdest Pixar film commercial that I have ever seen! First weird thing, the whole on-line chat with velicostar whatever the heck it was called! Now, I don't mind the idea of the toys being able to use other forms of technology believe it or not like when Rex was playing that Buzz Lightyear game on the SNES, I actually thought that was pretty cool because I own one myself. I could so relate to what he was doing....and I gotta go...I'll log back on in a bit, sorry! Okay...I'm back, had to get off since I was on the main house computer but back to what I was saying, in TS2, I didn't see anything wrong with Rex playing the SNES since I own one myself, it actually brought back memories and sometimes after watching TS2, I'll even pick up the old controller to it and play a bit, always fun. But I don't know about that on-line conversation though, what are the odds of that toy dinosaur meeting another toy dinosaur on-line or even worse, how does that toy know that for certain it's a toy, could be a kid who thinks he/she is talking to another kid?! Either way, it's just a little too far in technology for me, it's one thing for the toys to look up information through on-line search or watch movies through the Internet but on-line chat is taking it too far. I'm surprised that the toy didn't have her own facebook or even Myspace account on there. Next freaky moment Ken and Barbie, I have nothing against these two although let's face facts, Barbie is the most popular out of the two but that was the weirdest thing with the love music and all that (although I didn't know that the song was by Jessica Simpson, I thought it was an older song?) but clearly, there are innuendos in there, more so in the "Nice ascot" line because it sounds more like she means a$$-cot to me...or maybe I'm reading too much into toy love relationships here. Still, that was freaky, I actually thought it was dream sequence but it took a few seconds to realize that the two were talking to each other in real time, not in a dream. One slight problem, what type of outfit is Ken wearing?! I honestly don't think that's a regular Ken outfit, looks more like a Barbie one that some kid put on him, seriously, I have never seen an outfit designed like that for Ken...EVER! Try going down the Barbie isle in Toys R Us, no outfit like that exists for Ken or at least I would hope not! The Ham toilet humor, it wasn't as bad as I thought it was because from how it's phrased, it'll still go over a kid's head unless they own a cat or some other animal that uses a litter box. Did notice the Mission Impossible reference, I thought it was a little amusing but unless you've seen that movie, people won't entirely get it although there is a little more adult stuff going on in this trailer like the gambling scene amongst the toys, didn't take me long to realize that they were playing some form of a game that you play for keeps in. I hate to say it but the only part of the trailer that I really liked was that speech that Andy made about Woody, about him being brave and never letting you down...wow, Andy sure hit that one on the head despite the fact that Woody nor do any of the other toys move around when he's there yet he has such a connection to him that he knows him that well...now that part was awsome...but that was about it for me, I still want to see it just to what happens and such before I make any final judgments but I'm kind of hoping and Ken and Barbie's first meeting isn't entirely like that in the film with the whole "Take my breath away" stuff..

I was a little turned-off by the dragons when I first watched a trailer, but they grew on me. Now I'm in love with all of them, mostly because of their design, especially the Hideous Zippleback. I'm very partial to the character design as well. And the effects are amazing! Eat your heart out, Avatar!
Ken and Barbie officially broke up several years back, so I doubt she has anything to do with his dress. No, I really think they might be hinting at Ken's questionable sexuality. Which is rather low for Pixar.
Well, if you think about it, referencing online chat is almost easier to relate to than video games for kids these days. Although, I question how a webcam convo would go.
I'm hoping the movie is more focused on the ties between Andy and Woody and all these little whatnots in the trailer are only lame scenes to get the kids more interested. I'm really hoping that Andy doesn't trash them for good and keeps them for his own kids. Although, the daycare scene in the trailer seems to throw that out the window.

*sighs while rubbing head* Ken and Barbie are a confusing pair, if they ever get married...or wait, didn't they, I honestly don't remember...but hinting at sexuality, that's a new one.
I'm actually thinking the same as you Bampot, I swear it's been weird for me with this movie. First I was psyched about it then when I found out that Slinky's old voice died, I lost some of that psych, saw more trailers, got it back, saw this one, losing it again...I mean, I know that Pixar won't do masterpieces forever, sooner or later they will do a film that bombs but could this one be it? Who would think that the bombing film could have come so soon?

No, Ken and Barbie were never married. They broke up a few years back. But yeah, I really think the movie is suggesting something about Ken. Which is much too immature for Pixar standards...or at least it used to be. Yeah, I was doubtful when I first heard about it. Then I was excited at the teaser trailer. Now I'm doubtful again. I'll still see it at the theater, but I probably won't catch it on DVD. To tell the truth, I never even got around to buying the first Toy Story on DVD. I used to have it on VHS, but my mom sold all my movies years ago at a yard sell

Not quite seeing the point to reviving this thread but I showed my brother the trailer that I posted up here, he found a few little things that were off and just as an opinion of his, thinks that maybe this TS film won't be so good, he's already turned off a little by what he saw in the trailer I showed him.

A part of me is worried about this movie now. Woddy and Buzz have one of my favourite friendships in Pixar. Will it be affected detrmentally in any way if the writing is not above par?
Heck one of my favourite relationships PERIOD. (Boo and Sulley, Nemo and Marlin also make the top three in some respects though WALL-E and EVE just miss out on it too).
I loved the first movie how Woody was initially very jealous, did a bad thing, but he then saved him after telling the truth and with Buzzs' own breakdown and they became friends. (Also how it ended and their interactions at christmas was so funny!) I also DID actually really like the second movie, as we saw further establishment of it, and how they disagreed. Buzz wasn't afraid to say harsh things Woody had to hear, but still in the end was prepared to let him make his own decision even if he didn't like it. (Buzz was more or less- what use is 'immortality' if you can never be loved again? Which is true, it's not exactly how much time you have but what you do with it- I LOVE TS2) But he still spoke his mind. And in the end woody listened to him.
We also in that movie got the sibling-ish Woody/Jessie thing which was cute and I really like their friendship too. Though I must admit that Buzz and Woody's friendship kicks ass.
Now I get the impression that the movie is going to make allusions to a sterotypical gay Ken having a crush on Buzz and focus on THAT instead. As well as flamboyant!Buzz as well.
We... also aren't getting much indication of Buzz and Woody's friendship in the trailer (perhaps a symtom of so many characters in the 3rd movie?). That's kind of sad really when you think about it.

Hundreds of people are ALREADY giving TS3 high reviews on certain sites it seems... before the movie is even released. And these aren't the people who saw those early showings it seems to me. BEFORE IT IS EVEN RELEASED. DX www.lovefilm.com/film/Toy-Story-3/106295/I'm pretty annoyed at this. How about actually watching the movie and then giving it the rating it deserves? I actually didn't care for the trailers myself but I'm going to give it a chance and watch it before I rate it. And I'm hoping it does well. Please mystery 'raters' don't do this. It just looks silly (at best). Definitly people who love the 'brand name' regardless. How dumb. What ever happened to you know... actually watching a movie before rating it?

I hate people who rate movies before even seeing them! Usually, it's the other way around. Like, I'm no Twilight fan, but it annoys me when I see people already give the film a bad review. I like to watch or read something before I judge it completely and I see rating the film and entire judgment that can influence others wanting to see the film.
Although, the highest rated review on said sight is one pointing out that you can't rate the movie before it's even out, lol. At least some people aren't that obsessed. I think that these review sites should keep their polls closed until a couple days before a movie is released. Then the people who were able to see an early screening can put their ratings up.

Very true. I can give the ratings I want with regards the FIRST twilight movie I feel seeing as I saw it, in addition to reading the first book, and that was enough for me to know I didn't dig it, as well as the reviews of people who actually READ the future books but I can't really say anything about new moon or beyond the fact that 'it sounds like it sucks'. I wanted to understand the hype and that was that.
I can't exactly give it a 'star rating' however. I can only do it for the first movie probably (which gets 2.5/5 from me for simply being entertaining without meaning to be. But it is only entertaining when you are in a big audience in a cinema if you get me. The reactions are amusing and over the top whether positive or negative and it made me LOL. Plus the movie was actually genuinely a little better than the book. For some reason. Perhaps because my opinion had already been lowered in any case and I still decided to give it a chance? IDK.)
But FFS people, don't rate a movie with a star rating you haven't even seen yourself.
That one guy gives me hope but I do also agree they should have shut down the ability to give ratings. I wonder if anyone at Pixar could be given the link and go 'wtf?' if they saw it.
You can't be a FAN of TS3 either yet, if you haven't seen it. You can enjoy the trailer and hope it will be good but how can you be a fan of a movie you haven't even seen? It doesn't make any sense. Fan of the TS franchise? Yes. More power to you. Fan of TS3? Not yet you're not. Unless you deep down KNOW you are just one of those people who loves whatever you're shown by the company regardless and always will. Which doesn't give a good view on your ability to judge good work at all, so the rating would be invalid as a good judge of quality probably in any case if that was your attitude to all movies.

Yep. It certainly DOES seem like Pixar's early success is causing many of its fans to be blind about it, even despite its controversial political messages ridden throughout some (i.e. "ban exotic pets after watching 'Finding Nemo'").

Haha, I know what you mean about the theater experience and the movie being entertaining in ways it wasn't meant to be. I watched New Moon in a pack theater with on of my friends and had an amazing time just because it was a lot of fun. Some of the fans were hilarious! Like the girl who yelled insults at Jacob every time he was on screen X3
I didn't really get that from Finding Nemo and if some people did, I certainly don't think it was an intentional message. Not like the ones in Wall-E, which was a big message movie.

I wonder if anyone at Pixar could be given the link and go 'wtf?' if they saw it. Probably not. I didn't even click on the link, but I'm not surprised that people are already rating it. I did see a promotion about a month ago on Pixar's Facebook site about showing the first half of TS3 at University campuses across the US, so maybe that first half of the film gave enough information to American college students to start posting reviews and clicking on polls. About enough students to fill a campus theatre room were able to watch it since it was a first come, first serve thing.
